What’s the cheapest dedicated server you can possibly get? You might think of a provider like Kimsufi, but there are providers offering dedis below even their rock-bottom offerings. We’re not talking here about Xeons or even ATX-cased Core2Duos. Rather, we’re referring to the Raspberry Pi.
What is a Raspberry Pi?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 8 years, you’ve at least heard the phrase “Raspberry Pi”. The RPi is a single-board, all-in-one computer that is roughly the size of a credit card. Priced under $100 (and for some models, under $40), they offer a lot of power in a small form factor. For example, the current RPi Model 4 has a 1.5Ghz 64-bit quad-core ARM processor, up to 8GB of RAM, on-board Wifi/Ethernet/Bluetooth, USB 3.0, and dual-monitor HDMI 4K support.
You won’t be getting Ryzen performance on these systems and since you’re typically running on SD cards, I/O can be quite limited, but given the size and low power requirements, these little systems are marvels.
Raspberry Pi in a Datacenter?
From a performance perspective, you may often be better off running a plain old VPS given the Xeon-to-ARM performance advantage. However, there’s something tantalizing about having your own dedi server where you can max out the CPU for as long as you like, not to mention the novelty factor of saying “yeah, my site runs on a Raspberry Pi”.
RPI Servers
Recently, I saw a post on LowEndTalk from @AlienData_Josh announcing a new brand called RPI Servers, offering hosted Raspberry Pis in Texas. These little guys come with unmetered bandwidth (but if you’re planning on sustained load, please work with them to set an appropriate limit) and you can connect thumb drives or external USB.
RPI Servers accepts PayPal, Credit Cards via Stripe, and BitCoin. First month is prorated after the 6th.

It seems like quite an interesting option, especially for those that need more drive space than CPU performance. That goes doubly so if they’ll plug in a thumb drive or other USB drive if you ship it to them. Sounds very interesting to me!
