If you’ve spent any time on LowEndBox or LowEndTalk, you’ve probably come across a RackNerd deal or two. Now the company has something new to go with those VPSes: its own management platform.

RackNerd has moved away from SolusVM (its previous VPS control panel software that they were using), and has today launched ctrl, a proprietary VPS control panel developed for its infrastructure and customers. SolusVM has been retired across RackNerd’s entire VPS environment, with both existing services and new orders now using ctrl.

Kudos to RackNerd for making the switchover seamless. I logged into ctrl with the same credentials I previously used for SolusVM, and that was all it took. No VPS migration or rebuild needed, and the new platform and its features are included at no additional cost.

ctrl handles the familiar VPS management jobs and adds some useful new capabilities. You can reboot or power off a server, reinstall its operating system, reset the root password, reconfigure networking, open an HTML5 console, and check resource usage and bandwidth. Customers with multiple RackNerd VPSes can manage them in one place.

The additions are where things get interesting:

• One-Click Apps: Deploy AdminBolt, AnythingLLM, n8n, Ollama, LibreChat, OpenClaw, Hermes Agent, Coolify, Portainer, and more applications directly through the panel.
• ctrl Network Firewall: Manage optional inbound filtering on RackNerd’s network before traffic reaches your VPS. This is a nice one!
• More OS templates: Additional choices when deploying or rebuilding a server.
• A modernized interface: Server information and management tools brought together in a refreshed layout.
• Reference notes: Keep useful information alongside your services. Handy when your VPS collection has grown beyond what you can keep straight in your head!

That fits neatly with RackNerd’s AI VPS offerings. AI agents, chat interfaces, workflow automation, and application backends all need somewhere to run. A VPS can host the application and connect to any model provider, giving developers a practical starting point for these projects.

And if your bills from platforms like Vercel are starting to add up, self-hosting applications on a VPS, like one from RackNerd, is well worth considering. That translates to lower hosting costs, more predictable billing, and greater control over the entire stack.

The bigger picture here though in my opinion, is RackNerd’s ability to develop the platform itself, or as the title of this article suggests, take ctrl (get it?). Owning ctrl means the company can decide which features to prioritize, expand its application catalog, and respond directly to what customers want to run. Its team can take a suggestion from a support conversation or community thread, and work it into its own development plans.

That gives RackNerd room to keep adapting as applications and customer expectations change. A useful hosting platform needs to evolve along with the projects running on it. RackNerd says it plans to keep enhancing ctrl with additional features and integrations, and the new deployment tools and network firewall give customers concrete improvements to use already.

When I logged into ctrl myself, I actually found even more features and settings available in the actual panel. Definitely worth logging in and exploring if you’re already a customer.
