BurstNET - $5.95 OpenVZ VPS with 512MB

Burst.NET Well. You guys step aside because the big boy is coming. Via this WHT offer, BurstNET, an Internet service provider company that currently manage more than 200,000 domains and 3,000+ servers, have recently unveiled its own OpenVZ/vePortal based virtual server plans. The price starts from $5.95/month with their VPS Package #1, and you get:

  • 512MB guaranteed memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1,000GB/month data transfer
  • 1GHz guaranteed CPU
  • CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo
  • OpenVZ/vePortal

Yes it is pretty good spec for the amount you pay for. Servers would be in their own data center in Scranton. In fact, I believe all the other providers in Scraton are probably using BurstNET’s facility.

  1. Robert:

Tempting prices for tempting plans from a big name.
But when I click through on the “Management: BASIC MANAGED” link in the specs of their plans, reading the first paragraph (Operating System) already turns me off :
“Re-installation of any server, for reasons other than hardware failure, will be charged a flat rate of $65.00.”
    From that same paragraph :
“A flat rate of $9.95 is charged for VPS operating system re-installation.”

Maybe I misinterpret something, but most companies offer that for free from the power panel.
And will not complain unless you reinstall the OS every 2 hours or so and therefore hogging the node.

Well at least they provide a direct link to it. So at least, they do not try to hide anything.
Maybe I’ll give it a shot. I have to first find out if any overselling is going on though.

Damn, why do I always get sceptic, when I see (almost) free beer ?

    ———-
BTW, your link “the other providers in Scraton”. You misspelled Scranton in the link text and the link itself. It’s dead. when I add the ‘n’ it works. ;)

  2. Indeed a big VPS from some big name. I thought vePortal is provided so you can reload the OS yourself? BurstNET used to be doing just dedi/co-loc so maybe they haven’t updated their pricing page?

There is also no mention of a money back guarantee. 7 days minimum would have been nice.

I see they have been spruiking it has been tons better on WHT lately and rubbishing anyone who says it was crap.

I spose we can test it out on the cheap soon :-)

  6. Agree that many previous comments I’ve seen about BurstNET has been negative. They are indeed on the budget end of dedicated server market so it could have been people’s expectation as well — I have no idea.

They claim to have a redundant network on this page (also linked from the sales thread at WHT) :
    https://www.burst.net/network.shtml?c=89&kw=network

    In their SERVICE AGREEMENT CONTRACT
The Uptime guarantee is 99.5%, and they claim a 30 day evaluation period at 4.2. But it is not unconditional.

Some highlights of the responses I received to my questions :

    2) Do you offer a trial period with money back guarantee ?

    No, we do not.

    4) How many VPS’s are provisioned at maximum on a single Quad Core, and how
many VPS’s at maximum on a dual Quad Core ?

That information is not available, and irrelevant anyways, as load is not dictates by quantity of VPS, but rather by usage of the VPS that are on there. 2 VPS can use more resources than 20 others. We load our nodes based on usage levels, not based on quantity.

    11) When I install NGINX instead of Apache, how will this affect the
services mentioned in the BURSTNET™ MANAGED SERVICES DEFINITION & BACKUP
    POLICY ?

    Never heard of it.
Our techs cannot assist/support such—you would be on your own with that.

    ———————————-

Ad 2) You always lose one months payment.

Ad 4) I guess the disk subsystem isn’t trashed on their nodes.

Ad 11) WordPress.com uses NGINX instead of Apache, and so do many in the Alexa Top.
I didn’t ask for support. I asked how it would affect their managed services and backups.
And because he hasn’t heard of it, also means his tech support staff can’t answer questions about it.
I’ve installed NGINX many times before from the command line. Only sometimes I have to know how I have to configure things because each provider does certain things differently.
Anyway, another one on the avoid list.

Hey thanks for posting that information, I also pinged and tracerouted your server and got 117ms and I live in the USA, so not sure why yours is faster lol. I also test downloaded bigtest.tgz and got 2.0MB/s from my home connection which is what it maxes out at. I also downloaded it to my virtualserver which I have with 2host.com and it downloaded the file at an average of 7.54M/s although at one point i saw it as high as 11M/s.

It looks like I may be leaving 2host for burstnet. It’s an extra $0.95, but I get much faster download speed, more bandwidth, and double the harddrive space.

    From my VPS:

I currently have a VPS with 2host, but I can only download around 700KB/s to my home, and have been for a new VPS with faster upload speeds. For an extra $0.95 I get double the harddrive space and 4times the bandwidth…I think im going to leave 2host and join burstnet.

    About your DC/NOC :
Chicago IL, USA = FDC Servers ?
    Scranton PA, USA = Burst.net ?
    —Correct

Could you provide me with an IP for tracert ?
    –Here you go:
    Scranton PA: 66.96.240.102
    Chicago IL: 67.159.26.26
    Denver CO: 76.73.20.146

Also with a URL of a demo website (on one of the VPS’s) with some sample
pages with some pictures to see how fast they are built ?
Or alternatively with a URL of a speedtest file download (but I prefer to
    see the webpages) ?
    —Here you go:
    Scranton PA 100Mbit: http://66.96.240.102/100MBtest.zip
    Chicago IL 100Mbit: http://67.159.26.26/100Mbtest.zip
    Denver CO 100MBit: http://76.73.20.146/100MBtest.zip

Same story tested just now :
    Scranton (burst.net) 2.18MB/s
    Chicago (fdcservers) 479KB/s
    Denver (???) 1.46MB/s

  50. This is the worst experience from all vps I’ve tried. For three days my vps was just unreachable (and the whole node too of course). Network is bad. Disk i/o is bad. They gave me an ip of somebody who recently run some satellite sites on this address so I was having lots of requests for “SEOish” urls from search bots in my webserver’s logs. Not to mention that maybe this ip can be blocked due to “over seo”.

  52. Got an email from them:

    “Dear Valued BurstNET Client,

As you are painfully aware, we have had major issues with the hardware node servicing your VPS.

We have attempted for over a week now to stabilize and repair RAID issues (drive arrays, drive failures, and various other issues), with limited success. Please understand that is a very singular issue. We have MANY hardware nodes running with no issues at all, which contain very satisfied BurstNET VPS clients.

We understand the stress this has placed upon you and your online needs, and have decided finally to remove the hardware node and start anew. We have built a new hardware node, tested it thoroughly, and have loaded your account onto it. At this point, it is day one. You will have to load your data again. We will continue to fix the old hardware node and retrieve your data, but it was impossible to do so while the server was live.

We are also going to give you two free months of service on the new hardware node to help make amends for the time you lost. If you wish to cancel the service, we will refund you otherwise.

As stated earlier, we are still working on the existing server to get everything up and running and help you move any data you need moved to the new server at no cost.

Please let us know if you need this data, otherwise, we will assume that you were able to re-upload everything to the new hardware node yourself.

We apologize again for the problem you experienced, but are confident this new hardware node will be exactly what you hoped for when you signed on.

If you have any questions, please open a Customer Service Department ticket, and we will be happy to assist you.

We thank you for your patience and understanding, now and throughout this stressful situation.

    Regards,

I see 2 things bad with this email. It took them over a week to take the right decision and bring in a new node, and that they will assume that you were able to re-upload your data if they don’t hear anything from you.

But they handled according to their TOS, in case of problems, you must give Burst a chance to make amends, only if they fail at it, and only at their discretion you are entitled to a refund of your money. So I guess you can not do anything about it that it took them so long. They decide what is a reasonable time to make amends, not you. And they had their attempt for over a week.
Like Einstein said: insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results :p

But their assumption about your data without specifying or asking for a period of time is cocky.
One more reason for not trusting anyone with your backups.
I hope that you have a very recent one.

If I were you, I would just grab the refund and move on.
    P.S.

I’ve had a burst.net account for about 2 weeks, and in that time it was down for 2 days. Also sometimes it works great, but other times I experience some insane lag, it will take up to 2 seconds to get the output of running ‘ls’ Although i’m not sure, I think the Disk i/o is the problem. Lately(the last 2 or 3 days) it’s been running great and I haven’t experienced any problems, but i’m still keeping my eyes open for another good deal :)

I am seriously considering to move my main “low-end” VPS to burst.net and pre-pay for a whole year, but before I go crazy and do that, I would like to ask if you use any uptime monitoring tools (and if so) how was the uptime in this new service?

    — Odd question, please skip if you are too sensible —

Can anyone with debian and the lowest plan ( Package #1 / the one @$5.95) please verify if they can use aptitude update / aptitude dist-upgrade while still being able to serve static html pages (in a timely fashion) with a “light” http server like nginx?

    ———————————————————

Other than that, I just have a weird bone who feels awkward for going to OpenVZ… But if I can get more dedicated RAM this way than I would get of RAM+Swap in XEN, then why not give it a try =P

I have two VPS’s one with BurstNet on OpenVZ and one with 2host on XEN…BurstNet is much more professional, quicker to reply to problems, and has a nice way to manage your VPS, so on first appearances they looked very attractive, however after using them for a while I am really beginning to dislike BurstNet. My XEN based VPS on 2host is much more responsive, experiences less lag, and has a faster upload speed(to my home). I believe BurstNet throttles upload speed, since I can only get about 300KB/s per connection when downloading to my home. Also I could not get IPTables to work with OpenVZ….long story short, I’d suggest you pay $6 for 1 month and see how you feel about them before committing for a whole year. The worst part is that my BurstNet VPS just really lags up at random times, which I think is because of the Disk I/O…I really like the company, so I may just experience problems with the server on which my VPS is hosted…

Ohh also, I am running debian 5 32bit and an apache webserver on my BurstNet account, and the page is still accessible and just as responsive when I run aptitude update / aptitude dist-upgrade, about the RAM I really feel 512 is overkill for me, and I even have X fluxbox and VNC running on it and I manage to stay below 100MB/ram used…

    Hi cling[y],

I almost had a Linode 540, but they refused my request for a third IP number in pre-sales. According to them I didn’t have proper ARIN justification for it.

Just before the weekend, I went for a Xen hosting provider WeServIT in The Netherlands (that’s local for me) : http://www.weservit.nl/nl/server/vps_linux (But, they also advertise at WHT).
They have a 25% recurring discount coupon and a 50% one-time discount coupon from this page : http://www.clients.weservit.nl/announcements.php?id=8
So I’m paying EUR 15.62 including VAT per VPS, about US$ 22.–
Instead of 1x 1024MB VPS, I went for 2x 512MB VPS on different nodes to spread the risk of downtime because of a possible hardware failure. Both will run money sites and scripts.
They have really fast support with knowledgeable answers, and everything just went smoothly from the start.
Network connectivity is blistering fast, but that’s because I’m living pretty close to the Alphen DC.
    I am averaging about 6 – 6.5 MB/s download from their test VPS : http://94.228.215.10/100mb.bin
But I can repeat that speed multiple times, I tried 4 simultaneous, so they must be doing some traffic shaping in their firewall or so.
I had a complete LEMP stack (Linux (E)NginX MySQL PHP etc) installed and tuned in 6 hours from the command line (Putty). Had some problems with converting htaccess rewrite rules into NginX format.
When I was finished with the OS bit, I asked them to clone the VPS in this state to the second one, and change the hostname, MAC, IP’s, and UUID, etc of the clone.
About 60 minutes later I had an identical setup and tweaked second VPS. And on top of that, they also cloned the second VPS and made both clones available as restorable backups. Without me having asked for it. Pretty cool stuff.
Then I proceeded with installation and tuning of the sites and some other scripts on the first VPS. Which I hope to finish today or tomorrow, depending on whether I take a day away from it all.

Once I’m finished installing and tuning the scripts on the second VPS, I’ll try a 512MB VPS from Empire Hosting for a US based (Cedar Falls) Xen VPS : http://www.empire-hosting.net/xen.html
I also need one more VPS in the US. But this is for startup money sites.

  66. Robert:

Correction : I tried UPTO 4 simultaneous. My internet connection maxes out at 15MB/s (real 14.8MB/s) down (120Mbps). So I was close to the maximum already with 2 simultaneous @6 – 6.5MB/s. But once the first 2 were finished the other 2 downloads speeded up, to about 4MB/s average when finished.

From the reports I have heard regarding the payment screening process, I hope I am not in for a treat..
I have payed using my online banking system for generating one-payment only credit cards. Because they are one-payment only, I could not use any of those to pay through Paypal since the verification process involves charging my card one transaction of €1.5 and then input the 4-digit pincode written in the charge description for validation (– which, I reinstate that being a one-payment only card, obviously makes it unusable for a second charge after the check where I actually pay Burst for the service).

A few tries later, after realizing the deadlock of this check, I have gone to my bank portal and requested one more temp card, which I have used to pay Burst via Authorize.net.
I can see the order went through given the records in my bank portal, which from my past experience in various other online shops should mean everything is ok, but because of this reports I keep reading now I am very afraid I get asked for something that involves having an actual physical card to do whatever verifications they them necessary.

    Hope everything goes ok.
Will keep you posted once I actually get my VPS and can evaluate their service.

(Side note: I hope Paypal doesn’t actually charge me all those €1,5’s for the validations of those cards.. So far my bank seems to believe they are doing an actual charge, not the standard “Authorize” that doesn’t turn into an actual charge. Will see how that plays out..)

(Support does seem to be a little slow, I just say this because I have made a mistake during signup to the Ticketing System and mistakenly switched the dot in my email domain for a comma.. — weird enough the system accepted that malformed email address and a day has just went by since I have submitted a ticked from a temporary account to correct this issue, without an answer so far)

I had signed up for a helpdesk account with them previously and it took them 2 weeks just to activate the account. I didn’t know things had gotten twice as bad as before. Last time, it only took about 14 hours to get the VPS, which is crazy because I know it can be done automatically, because a lot of hosts do it that way now.

My VPS has also been extremely slow lately, but in my case I still have almost half a year of prepaid service.

I am “kind of” with hopes it is just something they will work out, because although I wouldn’t call their service perfect, until this extreme slowdown started to happen things were going pretty well for this kind of the service.

Yet I am kind of worried and embarrassed. Just recently I have canceled a long term account with VPSlink (a 2-year prepaid) and submitted under reason for canceling something along the lines of “BurstNET provided better value”. I just hope they don’t suddenly decide not only to prove me wrong but also make me feel like a jackass…

This sounds like an issue with the Host Node, I would open a ticket & Ask BurstNET if there are any problems on the node that you are on. It could be an abusive vps causing problems for everyone else, It’s not XEN so it’s possible.

It seems I didn’t have much luck with support ticket opened, since at the time they attended the ticket it appears that things were working fine (that is the bad thing about troubleshooting intermittent problems).

There was a bit of reckoning that the server load was a bit higher before their login was made, and right now I was having once again the same problems (but for a few seconds later I may not have any problems… given my luck that will probably be when they will recheck the problem)

Don’t want to jump the gun, neither rant to much on what was a very comprehensive and polite support reply, but if I am unlucky there is a big chance this problem won’t be solved. A pity, because the service was actually good prior to this.

Those loads aren’t all that high, You shouldn’t be getting a large amount of speed down with those loads, Which definitely brings it back to the host-node. Tell them to migrate you to a new node.

Will have to wait for that last ticket reply (I am still awaiting the answer from the recheck), but things do seem to be on track to become sluggish once again…

This is really a bad timing for me, because my “exam season” is just about to start, I am way too overloaded with work to start looking for another provider and do preparations to move all my stuff to another server.
I know it was a cheap service, but from previous experience with other cheap but somewhat reputable providers, I honestly was expecting something a little bit more consistent (in a good way.. not sluggish consistent!).

I also tried out their backup service, and canceled that, and they keep on pestering me to pay the invoice that isn’t due.
