Last night was the shortest day of the year, known as the Winter Solstice.  That marks the point where we reverse the progression of days.  From June to December, days get progressively shorter.  Now, they will get progressively longer, until June.  So if you’re fighting winter glum, cheer up – you just passed the nadir and days will be brighter from now on.
