Corgi Tech - $7 512MB VMWare VPS in Dallas/France

Corgitech Via this WHT offer. Corgi Tech that has just been launched earlier this month, is currently doing a 50% off their VMWare-based VPS packages, when you use coupon code CORGI50 at checkout. Their “Basic VPS” would be $7/month after the discount. Direct signup link here, and you get

  • 512MB memory
  • 40GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • 2x vCPU cores
  • VMWare

They take AlertPay, Google Checkout and PayPal. Servers in either GNAX in Dallas TX (test IP: 205.251.154.170) or OVH in France (test IP: 176.31.66.55). Its website is quite nicely done featuring cute looking Welsh Corgi, however quite a few links are either wrong or missing. Corgi Tech Limited are a registered company in the United Kingdom with Company No 7719404 (incorporated July 2011), and it’s address is clearly stated out in the website footer. However domain was somehow masked.

I think the company is too new to have a solid review. VMWare, however, makes it an interesting offer as one of previous VMWare provider, eNetSouth Cloud, just went to the dead pool for this month.

    • Wow, I didn’t expect to be front page on lowendbox just yet, but I appreciate it nonetheless. We currently have no slots left on our EU host which is why I’ve taken that option off the order page. We have another couple of Servers being built for the EU that will be live next week.

I am aware of the broken links (Blog/Facebook) etc.. We’ve had such a fantastic response from WHT that I personally have been very cautious of advertising/marketing further. The last thing we want is to be over stretched and our existing client base to suffer as a result.

And yes those are my two Corgi’s :) Left one is called Hanya and right one Indy.

LEA CPU Cores should be 2, not 4.

Guess the offer is good for wmware dallas, but this routing and speed is so bad for me.

From 33 ping to 146, to 171. Not really good, as softlayer dallas is 150 ping and up to 11MB/s (max).

    Will be passing this offer.

    November 21, 2011 @ 6:37 pm | Reply
    • The offer expires on the 27th of November. However seeing as we couldn’t accommodate EU clients this time around we might extend the offer to EU VPS further than the 27th of Novemeber, when our new EU VPS hosts come online.

If we have spare capacity around the the end of December we may bring it back for USA and EU. I am just really cautious when it comes to expanding. I really don’t want to bite off more than we can chew and controlling the Offers and limiting advertising is one way to do that.

Otherwise, the network seems speedy, and is pretty close to most hops I have tested around Western EU and the US. Support was speedy when I tried the “live chat”, and J was able to assist me, and let me know my VM was almost ready, and then sent me an e-mail shortly after to let me know I can login now.

i would like to know more things like Rails 3 support, the webserver used, possibility to install gems… i keep on reading that deploying Rails applications on shared hosts is a nightmare and want to know if you are supporting Rails development in this sense.

        November 25, 2011 @ 6:37 pm | Reply
        • To be honest we would probably be providing the minimum required support for Ruby on Rails. We have a developer on our team and he isn’t too keen on it, so we probably lack the expertise to help out too much with it. So I think it’s safe to say if you want good support for Ruby on Rails you would probably look for a more specialised shared hosting provider. I don’t really know of any either.

    • Yes you do have access to the VCenter console. Yes you can reinstall your OS at any time using your own ISO’s.

As for Management options I am guessing you don’t mean the management we provide but more about the control panel ? You will be able to stop/start/reset your VPS. Upload your own ISO to the VM and view the settings.
You will not be able to create snapshots, edit the VM settings (Hardware) etc..

        • We have ISO’s located privately on the datastore. You can request us to load it on to your VPS.
Alternatively you can load an ISO locally on your PC.

We are considering opening the datastore up for client access so they may pick the ISO’s themselves. This is in the works :)

        • Yes because the promo is over. Also we wanted a package that would allow us to cater for the Lowend community without any sort of promotion.

However we simply couldn’t offer 512MB RAM for $7 as a usual price. It didn’t make sense for us.

To answer your question about 2009 std and web editions , the main differences are how much RAM each supports, Active Directory Support, MS SQL support. Here is a PDF explaining more :

This morning, I found that my invoice I already paid the other day by Google Checkout was regenerated. When I signed up, what I found listed in my account for payment methods were Google Checkout, Paypal, or Paypal credit card. I chose the Paypal credit card one because I wanted to use my debit card. It seemed to have me enter the card into WHMCS, and I did. I made the mistake of storing it, and the second month I got payment failed notices followed by notices from my bank that I’ve been charged. I hope they can clean up this mess or I’m going back to what I had before.

AFAIK, they have/had been under a DDOS attack earlier this week(sunday, monday), but the site was up and running through it, just was really slow(obviously). I also received an invoice this morning about a bill I just paid a week before this date, so this is making me wonder what is going on over in Corgitech land today?

    December 29, 2011 @ 12:13 am | Reply
  27. rchurch:

It looks as though they can’t gain access to the box.

Hosting sales, billing and support with a provider that can’t mitigate against DDOS attacks doesn’t speak well of the company, though that seems to be the case here.

I wanted to upgrade the RAM on my system and I can’t.

If Junaid and Kakashi don’t fix this thing pronto it won’t look good on them, although their servers seem quite performant.

    December 29, 2011 @ 3:38 pm | Reply
    • Just to explain the above situation, the DDOS attacks on our main website caused the Cron job for WHMCS to fail and repeat every hour. Hence the incorrect invoices being sent out. Everything has been rectified now.

Just like a lot of companies we do not host our own support/website. In the event if anything were to happen to our servers this way we would still be able to communicate with our clients. Unfortunately the websute host we were with didn’t have much in the way of DDOS protection. However we were still able to communicate and support our clients through twitter and other means. Client VPS nodes were unaffected by the DDos Attacks.

Well i´m using corgitech for a few months now, and what can i say, they are very good and very fast replying and solving issues. for ex. when i open a ticket to change something to my VPS i´ll receive an answer in less then 15 minutes well this an extemely high plus.
The servers are very high performance and the internet connection is fast, i was using the UK site and the internet was not slow at all but when i change to NL the speed blown me apart DL 100MBits/UL:200Mbits
its an excellent service with a premium support. So you pay for what you get.

    The cons:

I believe corgitech should have a full price list of the extras, because opening tickets for it , i believe its not a good option and can create an image not very positive. (like for ex. extra RAM, CPU, HDD, IPs, Traffic , etc.

The price of extras in some cases i think they are quite high, basically the fixed IPs $3.00/mo. and RAM $15/mo each GB , unmetered traffic 100mb at $149.00/mo , here the competition has a much lower level of pricing. On the other hand the package itself its extremely competitive.

    Conclusion:

If you require a service out of the box with high quality buy it, if you want to add extras to it i recomend to choose better offers in the mainstream providers.

    regards,
    Paulo R.
