@Chief, @Joe, @Mark or whoever you are :-) Remember that “US” is not a location. It should be at least Central or West/East coast… Even better “Chicago” for this one.

    • Wait? The US isn’t a location? When did this happen?

The fact that the offer also includes Switzerland and Austria means it makes sense to put the locations by country name, not everyone who visits LeB is from the United States.

Think about what you wrote twice :-) It’s exactly because we are not all from US that we need to know AT LEAST on which side it is: NY or LA are quite different from a lot of us point of view.

That’s why test IP is here ;-)
And on a serious note… location here is just rough description and nothing more. Really nothing more. For all rest we have posability to ask for details and/or check test IP.

Hmm, does the test speed to austria seem a little slow to anybody else?

Tried it from two locations, the first is my VM at vooservers:
    $ wget http://at.edis.at/100mb.bin
    –2012-02-10 15:07:03– http://at.edis.at/100mb.bin
    Resolving at.edis.at… 213.229.30.35
    Connecting to at.edis.at|213.229.30.35|:80… connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response… 200 OK
    Length: 100000000 (95M) [application/octet-stream]
    Saving to: `100mb.bin’

    100%[============================================================================================================================================================================================================================================>] 100,000,000 1.40M/s in 95s

    2012-02-10 15:08:39 (1.00 MB/s) – `100mb.bin’ saved [100000000/100000000]

The second is from works leased line:
    $ wget http://at.edis.at/100mb.bin
    –2012-02-10 15:09:19– http://at.edis.at/100mb.bin
    Resolving at.edis.at… 213.229.30.35
    Connecting to at.edis.at|213.229.30.35|:80… connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response… 200 OK
    Length: 100000000 (95M) [application/octet-stream]
    Saving to: `100mb.bin’

    100%[============================================================================================================================================================================================================================================>] 100,000,000 1.04M/s in 2m 45s

    2012-02-10 15:12:05 (590 KB/s) – `100mb.bin’ saved [100000000/100000000]

The reason I think it is slow, is because copying the 100mb file from my VM to my work machine (albeit by scp, not sure if this is a more secure protocol) I was getting:
    100mb.bin 100% 95MB 3.8MB/s 00:25

I should say that both work and the VM are in the UK, but ~2.5MB/s seems quite a difference no?

      • TheLinuxBug:

Anyone find it weird that the test ips and the test files are not in the same location?

        Example:
        Austria: 149.154.155.1 – http://at.edis.at
        — (DNS’s to 213.229.30.35, not 149.154.155.1 and if you traceroute 149.154.155.1 it has no end point)

        Italy: 149.154.157.1 – http://it.edis.at
        — (DNS’s to 178.255.155.69, not 149.154.157.1 and if you traceroute 149.154.157.1 it has no end point)

        USA: 149.154.158.1 – http://us.edis.at
        — (DNS’s to 149.154.158.7, not 149.154.158.1 and if you traceroute 149.154.158.1 it has no end point)

        Germany: 149.154.159.1 – http://de.edis.at
        — (DNS’s to 149.154.159.6, this one is the exception it seems, but also if you traceroute ends at the edge router)

Why not just use the ip of the dns for your test ip, as those c-classes seem to have nothing to do with the destination outside of Germany?

Speeds seem to vary greatly based on location for the Italy and Austrian locations, some locations in europe (Netherlands, Germany, UK) seem to get pretty reasonable speeds, while others seem to go 1mb/sec or less.

Mostly just curious about those test ips though.

        • Hello,
our test-servers are in the corresponding datacenters, and sometimes on different physical production systems than KVM or VRS products are.
Test IPs have been provided to trace routes and to test the download speeds as all systems are sharing the same upstreams in the corresponding locations. Why certain routes have no end point we currently have no explanations for, but we will follow up on that. (have to first sort it out with our tech staff) – as far as I can tell, this must have something to do with firewalling, but this obviously has no impact on the performance on the hosts (thank god!) ;-)
          Greetings from Austria,
          Gerhard

        • William:

          Let me explain:

Austria – The Webhosting system still runs on an old singlehomed UPC IP from us.
Italy – We had other IPs before, thus hosting still runs on one of them.
USA – Our ISP filters ICMP on their router.
          Germany – same.

The Webhosting systems itself do not reply to ping/ICMP for security reasons, thus we can’t use these IPs as testips.

  7. Hi, I sent a mail to billing at edis . at about my invoice, but I am not sure if someone reads this mail and I must mail you to support. And I have questions about what of these plans are really month to month and what are yearly ones, because if I read right, you don’t specify that in your website, so I am worried.

    • Hi!
all plans are monthly, only micro plans are to be payed annually.
If you wish, we can setup any billing cycles you prefer. Micro plans stay yearly, because paypal fees eat up everything on small monthly transactions.

      Hi,

Since the german market is quite saturated we are currently not planning it, but consider it in future.

the german market is indeed saturated, but with junk offers I think because of the low dedicated server prices (see hetzner), also in France the same problem persists (see ovh).

still, as I am a frequent DE offer searcher, I found many Xen and OpenVZ, not many KVM.

After reconsidering we may offer KVM in Germany in future.
Need to deal with the datacenter first and see if we can catch a usable deal.

I see. You can transfer a VPS when it is a good sunny day. So you can do it when you feel doing it. Oh my bad, why did I ask such a silly thing, I forgot you have the prerogative.

Please be so kind to give us exact TIME and DATE the case happened.

We’d like to check this, because we NEVER refused changing the location of a VPS. Why would we – we’d rather give a client a new machine in another location than loosing a customer. Makes sense, right?

“A server can not be transferred, that’s correct. BUT we can get you a new one in another location and delete the old on. That’s what we do, if the clients asks us to do so.”

When I asked you to transfer my VPS, isn’t the context or the underlying meaning of it is to change the location? Unless your mind works verbatim.

“We’d like to check this, because we NEVER refused changing the location of a VPS.”

Great, “NEVER”. You just did it to me. I asked for it to be ‘transferred.’ But you refused to transfer it because what you can only do is ‘change location’. Great huh? A few reasoning can help the world become smarter. :)

“Please be so kind to give us exact TIME and DATE the case happened. ”

Sorry I am too lazy to dig my emails. Why not dig yours instead? I am no longer your customer BTW. Didn’t enjoy my stay with you.

And yes I am a fan of the world ridiculous. Again, ridiculous. :)

For us as the provider, we differentiate between “transfering a server” (which implies that contents and configurations need to be migrated) and just requesting a virgin machine in another location whilst deleting the old one.

Once again thanks for your really helpful feedback, we highly appreciate it!

I’ve seen lots of companies taking out words back for the sake of dignity with their clients.

They recreated my prepaid vps on another location when old one didn’t suit me anymore without any objection. So it’s correct that they don’t migrate vps (with all content, etc..) between locations but they are willing to change location and recreate vps on new one without any complication. Atleast that’s my experience.

        • Hi Guys,

we’d like to once again and for the sake of all of us here write it down:

We are not able to mirgate VPS / KVM instances from one location to another, BUT
we are able to delete one VPS / KVM at one location and create another virgin one with a new IP address at any other location free of charge and with no changes made to the contract.

Its hard to track what exactly happened in the past if clients are not able to give us their client-id, or at least an exact timing when conversations have been taking place. We handle a couple of hundreds of inquiries about vps every single day, that’s why we ask for your understanding.

We try to handle every single case professionally and in time and our staff is properly trained … but we are human beings.

If we made a mistake or one of our staff maybe answered an email not to your full satisfaction, please send an email directly to gerhard.kleewein@edis.at – I promise to follow-up on that matter and we will find a suitable solution. promise!

    • Hi Delirium,

we have an old billing-system that is hardly able to keep-up with the required flexibility VPS products require.
We are about to test different billing systems and evaluate certain options, to implement realtime-billing and more flexibility to the VPS workflows.

The invoice will be sent – definitely – and the payment link as well, but not in realtime.
It happens most likely around 5 to 14 days after you place your order.

      Cheers,
      Gerhard

Just in case you did not notice yet … we changed our VPS billing system to whmcs … this means: realtime invoicing, online paypal billing, no more stupid cancellation times, more convenience for you and for us … and, (I almost forgot the mention that) an easy to use shopping cart for our VPS ;-) YEAH!

Thank you very much to all of you – YOU are the driving force behind these developments ;-)

Yeah not most reasonable. It’s just vps not dedicated server where cancellations would be connected with some costs and in case of cancellation client need to know atleast one month upfront that s/he don’t want vps anymore but pay it for next month of non usage anyway. As soon as you pay one invoice you’re basicly forced to pay next one too unless you cancell it at same day as you pay it.

      • Dino Suarez:

This is an old fashioned type of policy that I hope they change. Now I’m going to have to decide 30 days earlier if I want to go another year with them. I probably will decide much sooner just so I don’t have to worry about falling into the 30 day window where I will be ‘forced’ into continuing even though they cant really force me to paypaling them money.

        March 11, 2012 @ 5:04 pm | Reply
        • William:

We don’t have this policy anymore now with WHMCS. It is now 2 days before the INVOICE IS DUE (which, usualy, is the same time when your VPS is due).
However, if you pay by creditcard or bank transfer (so you did NOT recieve a login for our new WHMCS) the 30day policy DOES still apply, for Creditcard this will change once we have our merchant setup and customers transferred to WHMCS, for Bank transfer this will never change.

          >It’s just vps not dedicated server where cancellations would be connected with some costs and in case of cancellation
For us it is. We have very specific laws about invoices here, and very specific tax laws – I cant explain detailed here (since giving law advice without being a lawyer is illegal) but it incurrs costs for us in our old system.

          >even though they cant really force me to paypaling them money
Yea… can’t force you… that’s what other customers also said while trying to scam us, in the end we always got our money :-)

Scam you? Don’t be silly. Not in this case. Example. Customer pay monthly invoice. And if only day, only one day later customer decide that he don’t want or need your vps anymore he will need to pay it another month too. Yes, I know it’s all in your TOS however it’s questionable here who scam whom. Because if you don’t get it as soon as customer pay ONE monthly invoice and at same moment don’t cancel vps customer will need to pay also another month invoice.

Don’t get me wrong, I personally have no issues with this now as you explained how new WHMCS/paypal payments work however forcing some other people to pay TWO MONTHS of vps usage for potential ONE DAY of vps usage is just silly.
If I would be your monthly customer I would cancel vps regulary every month right after I would made payment and before expired period request cancelation removal. Just to be sure that if I decide few days after payment that I don’t want your vps anymore I wouldn’t be forced to pay also another month of vps non-usage..

    About IPv6:

    Austria – Available, /112 per KVM/Dedicated
Switzerland – No support from the DC in the way we need it.
USA – Not available, likely not before Mid 2013.
Sweden – Not available in the way we need it from the DC currently
UK – In process (mid 2012)
France – In process (mid 2012)

The problem is that we need (for our allocation system) a very large v6 subnet – a /48 is not even cutting it which most ISPs cannot provide (or don’t want to).
Besides this we have no reverse DNS in place for it (neither as NS subdelegation nor in our normal rdns system).

It’s shame not to have IPv6 connectivity in modern and so well IPv6 connected DC as “White Mountain” data center. That’s rather rare for Pionen vps provider and major drawback to me.

I totally agree. I’m pretty sure EDIS could get enough ipv6 space from the DC (probably free too) to satisfy the amount of customers who want it. I don’t want a whole block. Just 1 ipv6 address would make the vps so much more useful.

First of all, I am a newbie. I have just bought a KVM VPS (KVM SMART) with EDIS. This is the second VPS I have ever used in my life. I had an awful experience with another provider introduced by this website.

Anyway, the IO speed at EDIS is quite decent.
    ~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=1600 conv=fdatasync
    1600+0 records in
    1600+0 records out
    104857600 bytes (105 MB) copied, 0.769676 s, 136 MB/s

I quite like their user policies, different regions have different policies. E.g. with respect to IRC servers, Open VPN relay, Open proxy relays. Apparently they allow legal P2P, which means you can download Linux images via torrenting. They even allow TOR relay nodes. I don’t have intention to run any of these. However it is nice to know that their legal departments do think stuff through.

The KVM comes with 2 Ethernet adapters, 1 IPv4 address, and 112 IPv6 addresses (Yes really!) I have no idea why there are 2 Ethernet adapters. I am only using 1. You can assign infinite amount of IPv6 address to one adapter anyway. I suppose some people might put that into good use. I have no idea why one would want to use 112 IPv6 address.

Anyway, personally I think EDIS is great. I highly recommend them. I am quite happy with ditching my old provider.

The people from EDIS might actually read this. I have a few comments.
    1. The auto-installation did not work. I requested for Debian Squeeze 64-bit to be installed. The installation failed, I had to go to the server via VNC to sort stuff out. It doesn’t really matter though.
    2. The cursor inside the VNC session doesn’t sync with my actual mouse cursor. You can see two cursors in the VNC window. Rebooting/changing installation image did not help. It doesn’t matter anyway.
    3. It would be nice if you could put Debian Wheezy’s image on the server. I know Debian Testing is not suitable for “production platform”. However, I am pretty sure there are a few other people who just want to experiment and learn, rather than doing “production work”.

You can upgrade to wheezy by modifying your /etc/apt/sources.list and running apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade (and rebooting after its all done to load new kernel.)

Note to readers: dont try this on OpenVZ and on Xen it might not be a great idea either.

Yeh, I did just that. It didn’t take very long, since the I/O and network are both faster than my own PC… It is simply…awesome!

Anyway, Wikipedia says this about OpenVZ: “All guests must function with the same kernel version that the host uses.”

I think you can get away with in Xen. You can apparently run Windows in Xen, according to Wikipedia.
