As dispute over registrars not handling cybersquatting and scammers’ domains has lead to major Indian ISPs blocking the web sites for NameCheap, Dynadot, Tucows, Sarek, and Gransy.
Thanks to LowEndTalk member @JasonM for sharing this news. Details from Domain Name Wire:
The move comes as part of a long-running dispute over cybersquatting. Indian courts and cybersquatting victims are frustrated that registrars are not responding to their take-down notices. Some registrars are seemingly asking that plaintiffs get a U.S. court order rather than one from India.
Attorney Ankur Raheja, who frequently acts as a Respondent’s representative in UDRP cases, noted today that five registrars’ websites are not accessible through a few Indian ISPs at this time: Dynadot, Namecheap, Tucows, Sarek and Gransy. The first three are among the top 15 largest domain registrars, although Tucows mostly sells domains through resellers.
To be clear, sites registered at these sites continue to work, as do DNS services provided by these registrars. However, if you are in India, you might not be able to go to namecheap.com.
Four major ISPs control 95% of the Indian market. However, this block appears to be easily circumventable. Besides the obvious approach of using a VPN, you can apparently just change your DNS. According to NameCheap:
you can try to use Google Public DNS in order to access our website.
Of course, you could also use my favorite registrar.
