RethinkVPS - $6.60 128MB OpenVZ 1Gbps Unmetered VPS in LA/Scranton

RethinkVPS Here is a new offer for the new year from ReThinkVPS, from an email from Sam. According to Sam, they will be ReThink’ing the strategy for 2012, doing things a little bit differently and trying to penetrate the low end VPS market. Well, best of luck. The promo here is not much different from what they have offered 2 months ago though. Use the coupon code 2012 to get 17% off of the same package. So “VPS 1.0” comes down to $6.60/month after the discount. Signup link.

  • 128MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 30GB storage
  • 1Gbps unmetered bandwidth
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

There’s a bit more info on the same offer posted on WHT. Nodes are located in either Los Angeles CA or Scranton PA. Servers themselves are connected to 1Gbps ports, although what you might eventually receive depends on a lot of other factors. From section 9 of their Terms of Services, they would contact abusers if a VPS is slowing down others. They have been around for more than a year now.

If P2P, IRC and public proxies are forbidden according to ToS, what other applications would you use such VPS for (1Gbps unmetered but only 128MB guaranteed memory)?

  1. Well, you can put an extremely busy gameserver xD

One of the mines used 500GB in December, I was… scared.

    • How would you run it with 128MB RAM? :D

      • Nope, 512 n_n

And I have several Quake 3 based servers, using around 80MB in OpenVZ

      • Game servers might be mostly CPU and memory bound, unless people are downloading maps most of the time.

I wonder if they’ll ever fix their DNS? Probably not.

Their Twitter feed is worth a browse, for prospective customers/victims. They seem to have an endless stream of outages…

This is true, worst part is they do have a LOT of problems, the one month i was with them it was outage after outage so i changed providers and have been very happy since. I wouldn’t recommend these guys, they either don’t know what they are doing or their hardware is horrible.

I just signed up for an account with them two days ago. Had nothing but problems since. I can’t even SSH into the box because it has no network connection. I’m only able to connect via the control panel’s console tool which drops my connection every minute or two. I have contacted support using their ticket system (only option, but I marked it as High priority) with a detailed description of the problem, making it very clear that I haven’t made any modifications to the machine, obviously because I can’t access it.

I got a reply an hour and a half later asking if I had made any changes to the machine. Again, I reiterated, “NO”, and have since posted 3 replies with more information on the issue. It’s been almost 24 hours and nothing. No communication, no support, nothing. Their website says they have 24/7 technical support, but I think it’s more like “whenever we feel like it, if at all” at this point. I even mentioned in a couple of the replies that they should just reinstall the OS, but still, nothing but silence.

I went with RethinkVPS because of their well-priced plan and unlimited transfer. I didn’t realize “unlimited transfer” meant “no network connection”. I’m going to give it a few more hours, and then I’m moving on. Looking at their website, it says that live support is not available right now. It’s Wednesday at 12:00 PM EST, 9:00 AM PST. You would think that 24/7 support would be around in the middle of the business day.

Finally got this issue resolved. Turns out that their provisioning script chokes on passwords with special characters in them. Sam figured it out and I now have a new virtual machine that has a network connection. In the frustration of all of this, I also signed up for Chicago VPS’s $7/month deal for 2 GB of RAM. I haven’t gotten my VM provisioned yet, but I always read good things about them here, so I figured I would give them a try. I still have my RethinkVPS for a few days to test, so I will pit Chicago VPS and RethinkVPS against each other and see which one offers the best performance (granted 512 MB vs 2 GB isn’t a completely fair comparison). So far, Chicago VPS has been pretty responsive as far as support goes. I sent them an email asking why it’s taking so long to get the VM set up and Chris got right back to me. The $7 has caused an influx of new customers, so they have a bit of a backlog waiting for new nodes.

Once again we are sorry for the slow replies, due to some personal issues we have had one of our technicians away and I have had to take up the slack of all the tickets. Due to this issue never happening before I was a little stumped as to why it wasn’t creating your VPS correctly and took some time to figure out.

We can’t compete with the prices of Chicago VPS but we hope our fast network and truly unmetered bandwidth will help you make up your mind and stay with us for your future VPS needs.

    Sam,

Now that I’ve had some time to digest the events that took place, I realize that these things can and do happen. Usually with me, they seem to happen at the worst possible times, but that’s my luck. I just want you to know that I am not blacklisting you guys. Truly unmetered bandwidth is hard to come by these days. And if I find myself in need of such a provider, or if things don’t work out with Chicago VPS, I will try you guys again.

I should mention that my VPS with you guys was cancelled at some point today. I don’t know if that was a miscommunication or what, but as of now, I don’t have a VPS with you guys. I would have liked to take you up on your offer and keep it for another week to evaluate if it meets my needs, but I understand a lot has happened over the past few days.

    • Can you please send in a ticket, it seems your cancellation request wasn’t removed.

i find their TOS too restrictive. i use IRC for customer support AND i use torrent technology as my means of transfering [legal] files for my website. torrent tech is great for saving bandwidth and keeping speeds very fast.

Beware, amateur hour here and borderline fraud.

RethinkVPS does not cancel your Paypal subscription when you cancel your service!

A few months ago I tried them out and cancelled my VPS
shortly after because there was nothing but problems.

Now, a few days ago, I checked my Paypal account
and saw that RethinkVPS has continued to collect the
monthly amount for the CANCELLED server ever since!

I requested a refund, but Sam Wilkinson insists the money
was an “overpayment” and is “not refundable” as per their TOS.

I will see what Paypal has to say about this practice
but suggest everyone stay far away from RethinkVPS
    and Sam Wilkinson.

  11. Yep, amateur hour.
Their DNS worked, then didn’t, I wasted three days trying to figure this out with no help from them.
If you want to publish anything that you need to work reliably, or want any kind of support, go somewhere else.
