SemoWeb - $21/Year 256MB OpenVZ VPS

SemoWeb Here is one special discounted VPS requiring annual payment, sent to me a few days ago from Dustin at SemoWeb. You can sign up to this offer via this sign up link. For $21/Year it gives you

  • 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 350GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

It is a similar package to this one we posted 2 weeks ago, except a bit less monthly data. Servers with HostDime in Orlando FL oops they are in Dallas TX. The VPS plans on their website are “fully managed”, although Dustin did not disclose what is included in the management in the previous post (nor can I found it on their website). Some pages do need to be updated when I search on their website. For example this FAQ page:

Q. Are your server’s Unix, or NT?
A. Our servers are Linux Red Hat 7.3. and Red Hat 9.3.6-4

I do hope they are using more recent distributions :)

We will indeed update our FAQ page, we are using the latest and indeed aware of the latest exploits and do stay on top of it. How ever i will have the FAQ updated, also this $21.00 yearly special is Semi-Managed.

  2. I’ve been told that you can order an unmanaged VPS if you want to. Further the VPS are located in Dallas, TX within the LimeStoneNetwork.

  6. Hey Dustin,

You may want to double check the price that you have for this offer on the cPanel license. It is showing as $190.00 but your other VPS’s are showing as $15.00. I think that is a typo.

I think It’s because the package requires ‘annual’ payment, Which means you would pay the annual rate for a cPanel License.

  7. Setup was fast. Server seems fast.

There was some password weirdness. It asked me to specify a password when I signed up like these things always do but then it didn’t use that password for anything. It seemed to generate a random password and use that for everything. Now, the new randomly assigned password worked to SSH into my VPS but it didn’t work to login to the control panel. I did the “forgot your password?” reset on the control panel login which said it was successful and that a new password had been emailed to me but I never got the email. I opened a support ticket about it and they manually set my control panel login password and everything works now.

    Support response was very quick.

I think it’s wrong to have a good promotion and not review them so:

The server used for these were in Dallas and were decently fast. My amazon VPS started to lag no matter what node it was on and I needed to change and I chose these guys. It definitely doesn’t feel like they overloaded and their set up time was only around 5 minutes from registration to email with VPS info. They haven’t had any hiccups so far and I even saw that they had my favorite linux distribution availabe, Archlinux. Download and upload speeds are fairly fast (not as fast as Amazon’s but Amazon has terrible bandwidth limits). Overall I’m very happy with this service.

They all are (BuyVM/FranTech/123system/Semoweb/younameit) probably just work together using same servers/racks to provide different plans /price, sharing the expenses and can provide support 24/7 across all different brands.

Just wondering what’s the relationship between frantech, BuyVM.net and 123Systems. The domain is certainly registered by Andrew @ 123Sytems but with frantech as NS.

I have had over 5 outages, lasting a good few hours at a time.

The servers are as slow as can be.
When you ask for a refund you cannot get it, why would I want to continue a year with 5 outages every 3 days?

I highly recommend you stay away, they have no consideration for their clients, and again, another host in the industry after nothing but cash, unsure if these are resold however it goes to an external source.
