Dustin, are you reselling 123 again?

    • (1) They got a /25 IP addresses from Limestone, and (2) this plan does look a bit different from 123Systems’. Although we still need Dustin to confirm.

Well, seeing your pricing in your Hostdime packages, maybe I will consider the standard 256 plan (also, more HD and BW). But the 768 burst is VERY attractive :P

Also, I am interested in the posibility of returning with your $21 yearly plan =)

The $21/Year plan is completely sold out, we wont be stocking that plan any time soon.

If you have any other questions let me know I will be sure to answer them.

  3. Hello,

To confirm we no longer resell them nor any one us. We do everything directly with Hostdime and Limestone.

We are going directly through Limestone Networks!

This special is with our Dallas location.

Let me know if any one has any other questions.

I can testify for the rock-solid stability of Semoweb. As a trial run of offloading things from our main server, I moved our DNS system to a Semoweb VPS.

  9. Right off the bat, I can tell it’s going to be a fun ride with Semoweb. Their welcome email has my password in plaintext. That’s a big no no from a security standpoint. And judging from their response to me pointing this out, they don’t see it as a problem. So I guess I’ll keep looking for a VPS provider that takes security seriously.

    • Hello,

Sorry it seems like you have not purchased hosting much, this is a typical procedure for the vps passwords to be emailed. With all our services passwords are emailed to clients and about 99.9% of hosting companies do this.

Go purchase a few more accounts else where you will see its the same exact way.

      Anyhow best of luck!

      April 9, 2011 @ 2:54 pm | Reply
      • Pretty much every software as well as hosting provider sends their original password out in plaintext along with a note to change it asap. Some softwares even require it and won’t allow you to do anything else until you do. (Digital Point just made me do this as I haven’t been back over there in almost a year so that’s why I;m thinking about it.)

This comment kind of reminds me of the issue with Network Solutions had with WordPress and how it stores it’s passwords in plaintext on the server. There’s no real way around it.

Rather have a client get their required information in the simplest method possible and be able to access their account without any problems. Get them in and going asap. Then we can worry about security. After they change their password of course. ;)

        • DrMike,

After speaking with our billing department I have found that this user requested a refund and I looked into it further, He signed up telling us how its so unsecure and we don’t care and he doesn’t like doing business with such people who don’t care etc…… but I think what ticked him off was he offered his security service and we kindly declined as our procedures are common and the client can always change the password immediately they are not forced to stay with the generated password.

“as our procedures are common and the client can always change the password immediately”

It is common, almost every VPS provider uses these insecure methods. But I have changed quite a few VPS providers to adopt a more secure approach.

          providerservice.com
          Fitvps
          ramhost

and many others by my constant ranting. Though I don’t cancel my VPS if the welcome email contains my password as it usually does. You can expect my rant too when I sign up with you.

    • And then how you can send a password without being int plain text? o_O

Maybe in a textfile compressed with.. a password? LOLOLOL

      April 9, 2011 @ 3:46 pm | Reply
    • It is actually possible to not send clear text password as emails.

Why can’t the system just send the client an email that the password is ready to be retrieved, after payment has been verified. After the client logs into the client portal via HTTPS, plain text password is stored in a message, which can then be deleted.

The issue here is actually NOT about storing the plain text passwords, but transmitting the plain text password to a 3rd party system, through network infrastructure that is not wholly controlled by the provider, without any encryption.

      April 10, 2011 @ 11:24 am | Reply
      • I have noticed that in most places that take security seriously, your welcome email contains your username and that’s it. If you forget your password, you get a link sent to your email address which takes you to an SSL protected web page so that you can change your password. The password is NEVER sent over a non-SSL connection, nor is it ever sent to your email address. I never got ticked off at Semoweb nor did I offer them any “services”. I just made an offhand comment that if they wanted help with security, to let me know. Regardless of what they want to think, I am not in the habit of giving money to ANY company that has such a flippant attitude toward security. =) I got my refund, I found a host that doesn’t send user passwords over unencrypted connections, and I’m happy now.

Mind you share who that is, I never came across a provider that does except fdcservers.

I doubt there’s one budget vps provider doing that but what makes you think this gives you an image that they don’t take security seriously? Just change the password after it’s delivered. Bam. Was that so hard?

        • Hello,

Glad your happy with your new host do take in mind this is quite standard with WHMCS and as mentioned you are not forced to keep the generated password so it should be such a big deal IMHO.

          Anyhow best of luck.

Agreed 100%. It doesn’t matter how many other hosts do this, it still is a horrible practice. A VPS I ordered recently got compromised because the provider emailed the password in clear text. I wasn’t sitting around waiting for them to provision it (they were slow and it was the weekend), and by the time I got to it, the password was already changed and the server was sending out massive spam. The host confirmed it was being accessed from a Russian IP. The only way they could have gotten in was through the welcome email.

Just because the guy who wrote the software was clueless about security, doesn’t mean the whole industry should play along.

And why are they being stored in plain text anyway? They should be hashed and salted. Or perhaps, since it’s a VPS, they shouldn’t be stored at all.

The software is flawed as written and you ought to change the email template, a trivial task. We know what the password is since we typed it in; no need to broadcast it to the world.

Another option is to import our id_dsa.pub into authorized_keys on the host while completely disabling ssh to the vps until we can connect and set it up to our liking. There are so many options here, there’s just no excuse for emailing passwords.

          April 26, 2011 @ 6:59 am | Reply
        • @Ryan: I don’t see how it’s your VPS provider’s fault that your email account was compromised.

          April 26, 2011 @ 9:27 am | Reply
        • Ryan:

@NickM – it wasn’t. The password was sent in the clear across ~20 hops. Someone was logging traffic, sniffing for passwords.

          April 26, 2011 @ 9:33 am | Reply
      • I 100% agree. Another solution is to just have the user set the password when they sign up (over an encrypted connection, of course).

The weird thing is, some providers will have you set your password when you sign up, and then email that password back to you. I’ve never understood that.

        April 26, 2011 @ 3:30 am | Reply
        • Its default procedure with WHMCS, you can always change your password via ssh
passwd” Or if your worried about your client area you can do it from there as well..

BTW- Is image hosting allowed on my VPS, semo? I plan on starting a website for our family to view and upload pictures.

    Thanks for any pointers.

Image hosting is allowed on your vps long as the content is legal.

This is a very cheap offer– I did extensive research on Semo Web for two days before purchasing. It looks like ever since they started getting their own servers things have been stable and only positive comments!

My experience so far is great, support enabled TUN/TAP within a few minutes and held my hand through the order process on live chat. Thumbs up. :)

  35. Signed up for this offer last night, reloaded with Debian 6 via SolusVM, and couldn’t ping or ssh to it (though I can ping out). I don’t know if it worked with the default template, because the very first thing I did was install the Debian 6 template.

SSH via PowerConsole does work, and I tried installing nginx from the Debian repositories, and got all kinds of errors related to the OpenVZ configuration on my container. Submitted a support ticket last night (this morning, really) and now have not heard anything back from them during regular business hours today. Completely unacceptable to not at least receive a response saying “We’re looking into the problem” during regular business hours the day after submitting a support ticket.

I actually did get a reply, about 3 minutes after you replied here, so I’m guessing that you found my ticket. I’ve actually tried using several of the other available templates (Debian 5, Ubuntu 10.10, and Cent 5.5) as well, and I have the same problem with not being able to access the VPS.

Thanks for taking the time to check this out.

        • I’d just like to let everyone else know that my issue has been resolved. My best guess is that there was a glitch in the creation of the container. Their support staff has been wonderful, though I’m not sure why it took so long for a reply to my initial ticket. It might have been my fault, actually, since I created the ticket, then replied to it with more information, which might have changed it’s status from “New” in their support ticket system, and caused it to not be seen right away. My apologies to everyone at Semoweb for the initially harsh criticism of their support – you’ve been great and handling the problem.

    @semoweb :

I misunderstood semoweb offers and subscribed yesterday. I contacted the billing service to request a refund. While billing service understood my mistake, they don’t want to refund me but instead added credit to my account (vps cancelled).

But i’m “blocked” : these 30$ are stuck on my SemoWeb account.

Anyway to get it back on my Paypal account ???

Unless, one wants to buy it :).

It looks like they’re running their main website and ordering system on a server in LiquidWeb’s datacenter, in Lansing, Michigan. It’s likely that this was just a problem at LiquidWeb’s datacenter or they were rebooting their server and you happened to try to order while it was coming back up.

    Hi.
This is my follow-up review of SemoWeb Budget VPS.

I have shared my experience earlier but thought I should follow up to show my appreciation to Dustin and his team.

I would like to dedicate this paragraph to thank Skyler in support, for helping me fix the iptables issue I was having, thanks for replying in just a FEW minutes!! Amazing support, for a budget provider. I would even say their support is better than Rackspace, and they are a >BUDGET< provider!

Never had any downtime,I'm now running VPN and photo family site on this VPS, and you might not believe it, but it is running VERY fast still.

    So:
Support: 9/10 (I say this because no Host is perfect)
    Performance: 10/10
Uptime: 10/10 (I haven't had any downtime yet)

Keep up the great work Dustin and I promise I will be your customer for a long time to come.

WHAT I JUST LEARNED ABOUT VPS OPERATORS…A question you need to ask is, does your VPS operator have local terminal access to your VPS, if not, any glitch in your VPS that prevents SSH login and you are FINISHED, the only solution you will be offered is to REINSTALL THE OPERATING SYSTEM and blow-off all your files. Unfortunately, while Semoweb has nice prices, they do not have local terminal access–in other words–they are remote VPS operators.

Do they not have the “Console” option available to you in the SolusVM control panel?

This should drop you into your vps even if SSH is not running.

      August 18, 2011 @ 7:04 pm | Reply
      • They do have a console option in the SolusVM control panel, however it never works for me. It also gives an ‘SSH to Console’ option, where you can (should be able to) SSH into the host node and view the console, however that does not work either. Essentially they have the option but it does not work or is not configured correctly on their end.

The only time this became a problem for me was when I accidentally locked myself out of my VPS with iptables, luckily a reboot cleared iptables and I was able to get back in.

        • Bill Webb:

The “console” option is defunct–never has worked. They clearly have no back-door or they would have utilized it. The irony is, the VPS is serving-up webpages nicely, but I can’t get into the box. My own backdoor, Webmin, which has saved me previously from SSH going haywire, is also offline. Both SSH and Webmin were running on non-standard ports which makes me wonder if the ISP’s firewall has locked me out. Semoweb did not respond to that inquiry.

That is the IP given to me in control panel for console access. Doesn’t work.

You guys saved me…apparently SEMOWEB got one of the VPS consoles running by changing it to the correct port and despite Semoweb’s advice that the operating system would have to be reinstalled because SSH files were corrupted, I installed the dropbear SSH and it came to life immediately. THANKS. Hopefully SEMOWEB can at least get the console running on the other VPS.

  63. Ok so im gonna tell the truth about there service. If you Google there name there are a lot of comments about there speed being so slow. I thought to my self maybe there all lies. So i signed up with them with 3 of my sites each site is getting around 500 views a day so no traffic at all.The speed is so slow. There are peak times were like in the morning ( uk time ) everything goes slow. Then at night 1 / 2 uk time it gets a bit faster. Toke me 3 hours to upload 50 files. I had to zip the file and upload. I then asked support to check the speeds and to unzip the zip because 3 hours for 50 files and i had 150 to upload. I got a message back saying ” you are on a unsupported vps ” when i also asked about the slowness. Also try and send emails from the vps. I try and send email’s and i get back you have been black listed. Because there are other spam article on the same server has me i can not send emails from the vps. I own a online game and can’t even send a email on user register because of other members using semo web on the same server black listing the server. Please try and avoid this company when something goes wrong e.g your vps goes down you will get ” you are on a unsupported vps ” The speed is so bad. 3 hours to upload 50 files. Im on the 5 dollor vps not on shared hosting or anything like that a vps. PLEASE AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COST BECAUSE OF THE SPEED.

P.s im on a 100mb internet line so ftp / upload is not because of my internet or computer.

    Please avoid this company

    • Just thought id add a little update. In one week my sites/ Vps have been down for 3 whole days. The sites/ vps is up and running i go to sleep wake up and the vp shows offline and try and boot it but does not boot. I report the problem to there support at 9.00 am in the morning and they do not get the vps working till the next day. Im losing so much money because of semo web. They say they have 99.9 up time but trust me they wouldn’t even hit 70%. 3 out of the 7 days of the week the vps is down. I have asked them for a sorry ( seen has my sites earn 1000 a day ) but they just close there tickets. The support is real bad. Please don’t use these for hosting. Ive been with them for a year now and there the worse hosting ive ever been with.

      • Yomero:

        Ahm, 1000/day.
Do an inversion in better hosting and not just 3 bucks. Ridiculous…
