Managing Your LowEndEmpire With Ansible, Part 1

Tags: , Date/Time: November 20, 2020 @ 5:38 am, by raindog308

Ansible is an automation platform that can be used for provisioning, configuration management, and deployments. It does not require deploying an agent and is suitable to manage any system that allows SSH connections and can run Python 2.7.

Ansible is very powerful for fleet management. Currently, many IT organizations espouse a “cattle not pets” or “stamps not snowflakes” mode of managing in their IT. If your servers are pets, you lovingly create each one by hand, tweaking and tuning it to its specific purpose. This is fine if you have 10 servers but does not scale well. If your servers are cattle, you can create them by the dozen, with the idea that you manage each system identically with common policies.

For managing your own personal LEBs, Ansible can accomplish several things:

  1. Taking the drudgery out of common setup tasks, such as installing packages, tweaking config files, installing creature comforts in dot-files, setting up software, etc.
  2. Enforcing policies so that systems don’t “drift” from your standard configs.
  3. Automating routine tasks such as updating systems, deploying new software, etc.

This tutorial will not attempt to cover everything that Ansible can do, but rather show you how you can quickly make managing your LowEndEmpire more pleasant.

In part one, we’re going to introduce some Ansible concepts and get Ansible setup on your control node (the master).  In the next tutorial we’ll use Ansible to manage some hosts.

ProximCloud’s Shared Hosting Special: 30% Off First Two Months (From $1.09 per month!)

Tags: , Date/Time: November 19, 2020 @ 12:00 am, by raindog308

In the 70s and 80s, big conglomerates were the fad in business.  You’d find the same company working in a dozen industries, from oil exploration to salad shooters.  It generally didn’t end well.  The business world soon wised up that doing one thing and doing it well was a far more profitable path and today the world’s leading companies are generally focused in one market segment.

What does this have to do with today’s offer?  Well, ProximCloud is focused on shared hosting and they’re doing it right.  I was interested in their offer when it first came out and have been following them on Discord.  They seem a pretty well-run shop.

Today they’re bringing us a special coupon code: use LEBOctober2020 for 30% off any package on any billing cycle for two months.

Their WHOIS is public.  You can find their TOS on their web site.  You can pay with PayPal.

Here’s what they had to say:

“ProximCloud is a small website hosting business, which has been in operation for over two years (since 28th Feb 2018), which has strived based on the reliability and low-cost factors of our services. ProximCloud always puts the customer first, and has ensured to provide our customers with many support-methods to ensure they can reach us when they need it, and when it suits them.”

Interview: Q&A with the Founder of jsdelivr, Dmitriy Akulov

Tags: , , , , , Date/Time: November 18, 2020 @ 12:00 am, by raindog308

Our LowEndBox Interview Series has featured many interesting personalities so far and today we’re excited to bring you an interview with the founder of jsdelivr, Dmitriy Akulov.  This is a very cool project which offers free CDN services to a huge array of FOSS projects.  They’re serving billions of request per month all over the globe.  I think you’ll find this interview an interesting read and case study of how a small idea can grow into massive planet-critical infrastructure.

First, who are you and where in the world are you located?

My name is Dmitriy Akulov and I live in Krakow, Poland. Originally I am from Ukraine but I grew up and went to school in Greece.

Tell us what jsdelivr is all about and what the project’s goals are.

jsDelivr is a free multi-CDN for open source projects, developers and webmasters.

Currently we proxy all of Github, npm registry and WordPress addons registry. This means we can load any file located on those services.

Developers get an easy to use method to distribute their code without having to pay for commercial CDN services or think about infrastructure management and devops.

Website owners use jsDelivr as a quick method to grab and load the libraries and files they need while at the same time optimizing the performance of their websites.

Currently we utilize Cloudflare, Fastly and Stackpath to provide the best possible performance and uptime to our users. In mainland China we have an ICP license and use Quantil to serve our content.

What inspired you to begin this project?

It was always a challenge to find the libraries you need, download them, upload them, add the correct paths… And later you would have to keep them updated by repeating the same process.

So I had the idea to build a better Google Hosted Libraries with community contributed libraries, an easy to use interface and a big focus on performance and availability.

Managing servers was always something I enjoyed, and so building the infrastructure for this was a really exciting project for me.

MadGenius Offers Scientifically Proven Services in Chicago and Virginia! (1GB from $7.49/mo)

Tags: , , , Date/Time: November 17, 2020 @ 12:10 pm, by raindog308

Mad Genius has returned!  We saw them back in July, after a loooong absence (way back to 2009!).  They’re hosting in Chicago and are bringing us some KVM plans.

I always look at providers’ web sites when posting offers and it’s refreshing to see someone who

  • is not using the same ThemeForest template as everyone else
  • has put some thought into their company name and branding
  • has a cool mascot (OK, maybe I just like MadGenius’s scientist)

They’re based out of Minneapolis and has been in business longer than some LEB readers have been alive (since 1998 – they offered dial-up at one time!)  They offer a full range of services, including shared, VPS, reseller, dedicated, and colo, and can do managed services for you as well.

In their own words:

“Madgenius.com, is a locally owned and operated full service hosting provider in the Minneapolis area that has been in business since 1998. We are dedicated to providing web hosting, VPS, dedicated servers, networking and managed Internet services at the right price to residents and businesses.

They’re a registered business in Minnesota USA: File Number 3645726-2.

Their AUP and Privacy Policy are both available on their website for review and their WHOIS is public.

Accepted payment methods: Bitcoin, Credit Card, PayPal, Bank Transfer
