Anyone knows JVDS? One of the first unmanaged Linux VPS provider using UML (same as Linode just 2 years ago), and used to be owned by none other than Rus Foster who currently runs ThurstVPS and GigeVPS. That was way before this VPS thing is considered “hot”, and you need to be geeky with propeller hat to run it. VPSColo on the other hand, provides managed VPS hosting. Then it got sold to Fortress ITX in 2005, who runs many web hosting companies including DedicatedNOW and SolarVPS. Then last week SolarVPS announced the re-launch of VPSColo brand — but this time JVDS is their premium managed solution and VPSColo is the budget unmanaged brand.
Confused? You bet, but at least (1) they are backed by people with years of experience and not one-man team either, and (2) they are cheap :) For $5/month you get
- 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
- 10GB storage
- 250GB/month data transfer
- OpenVZ/SolusVM
You can order the above VPS in either Los Angeles or New Jersey.

VPSCOLO/Solar isn’t owned by Fortress/DNOW I don’t think? I thought they just had their servers with them. Could be wrong however.
WHOIS of those domains point to the same physical address in NJ. Fortress did buy JVDS/VPSColo quite a few years back, although I am not too clear about where SolarVPS fits in.
I think that’s more to do with the fact that their servers are there.
The website:
“allowed us to build a truly virtualized office and data facility network”
I don’t think they’re the same company.
I sincerely hope they aren’t (still?) owned by FortressITX / DedicatedNOW, because they (FITX/DNOW) are the only hosting business I’ve ever run into worse than Leaseweb. They took JVDS from Rus when it was still pretty much a first-class service and absolutely ran it into the ground, providing an increasingly mediocre service and laughable “support”. The day I finally fled from that nightmare (had two VMs, one of them a *long*-discontinued FreeBSD jail offering) was one of the five or ten happiest days of my life.

Just because the IP’s are owned by Fortress.. of course they are, they have their servers there.
Right going to jump in on this one as we still have a working relation with Fortress ITX
I sold JVDS/VPSColo many years ago to FortressITX and SolarVPS bought them from them
ThrustVPS/DamnVPS is a normal customer of FortressITX. We get bills from them and pay them.
Anyway won’t thread trash. SolarVPS know what they are doing
Thanks for clarifying. No doubt SolarVPS know what they are doing as they have been around for quite a while as well.
too bad they got no 128MB plan or discount for lowest plan. their LA seems to have good connection to asia.
got that one in NJ and thumbs up, bandwidth to/from europe is pretty fine (around 10 mbit) and cpu is pretty fast at this price.
