HostRail‘s previous offer here is currently the most commented post. 570+ and counting. I guess this post might actually stop that one going up :) Jack forwarded me an email from HostRail on their Christmas Special. 65% off recurring discount with promo code DEC10CAN — this applies to all their packages not just Linux VPS. That means their 1 Power Unit is now just $1.05/month after the promo code is applied. Order it here :)
- 256MB memory
- 30GB storage
- 200GB/month data transfer
- 300MHz CPU
- OpenVZ/SolusVM
Servers in Dallas. Although Constantinos has always been helpful here, I just can’t think of how it can be done at this price. Well, with HostRail you can pay on month-by-month basis so I guess there’s not much to lose if you test out.

How on earth does he do it? Great for using Hulu outside the US. I *THINK* irc is allowed on their VPSes too, so it’d be perfect for a bouncer or something.
Well if you Get a TUN/TAP device you can indeed setup a VPN Server i thought of thinking to open a Vpn-Service but
i dont know any User / Payment Handeling software but thats offtopic
i saw today a Similar offer on WHT you Get for 2,50 USD (50% off non-recurring) with 5 TB traffic wich would be good for a VPN-Gateway but this is not intend to be a commercial spam… so see for yorself
Those are with Axisnext. Considering they charge $12 per extra 1TB transfer, there’s no way in hell you’ll get anywhere near 5TB for $2.50. Not that anyone should expect to, but if you’re sold something you should be entitled to get it.
Even at the maximum monthly price of $5, that wouldn’t pay for 1/20th of the cheapest 100TB.com server. They’re counting HT as extra mhz to say they give you 500mhz each. Doing some quick calculations, they’re overselling bandwidth at approximately 7:1, assuming cpu is guaranteed and not oversold.
I know pretty much every host will oversell (and definitely the hosts we’re talking about on this site) but if they’re overselling and offering fairshare, I don’t mind so much. Overselling but also selling you things based on untenable figures is different…
I did not get a tun/tap interface, so I have to use a socks-proxy. IPsec is not possible either.
“Wah I did not get TUN/TAP, so I have to endure terrible hardships.”
You can request it to be enabled just by posting a support ticket.
I did that and had tun/tap working after about 10-20 minutes.
Yep IRC is allowed on the VPS’s.
Only for new customers?
The promo is valid for both new and existing clients :)
Would take it if i could pay for 1 year at that price, i only see monthly or quarterly option :o
Bank charges 1euro conversion fee for card transaction :o
Pay with paypal ? then no fees
With paypal i also get charged 1euro conversion fee if i use mastercard.
hmm i dont get charged a fee i payed with paypal (with my mastercard on file) maybe its just your card issuer…
if you are outside the US try Neteller they dont charge you fees i have a (physical)-card from them since 2008 and have it bound to my paypal account and it works fine because both paypal and neteller currency is euro you are fine the exchange is free
Each time you pay for anything with PayPal, you’ll have an option called “let PayPal handle the currency conversion”, I know I have this, but maybe you first have to create a paypal account and ‘link’ your card to it.
What rm said is right. I *don’t* use it because it works out higher for me (like 10 cents instead of my bank charging 5 cents for example). But I am sure you could use it.
If you want you can open a sales ticket and we can create a yearly invoice for you.
I cannot possibly conceive this will end well for them, except, perhaps for gross overselling. The economies of VPS hosting are good, but no so good you can afford to give away your service for about $1/month.
*cough*oversold*cough*

Guess small VPS companies will close trying to compete with them. Is this also a fully managed one or an unmanaged one?
It appears to offshore VPS as well !
All our VPS’s are fully managed :)
Signed up, waiting the VPS get deployed. :)
O-M-F-G this is amazing, I will reconsider taking another VPS with them…
Overselled or not, they will solve your problems xD
Thanks Constantinos, you’re great.
On the node I am on I am not able to tell if their is any overselling or not. :)
Ordered a 2 Power Units. Waiting for the deployment of the VPS.
Great going Constantinos. Thumbs Up!!!
How to tell if HostRail fixed their IPv6 yet without having one:
In your GNU/Linux system (e.g. on another VPS with v6):
> apt-get install netcat6
then run:
> nc6 -vvv6 2607:ff68:100:10::37 80
You will get
> nc6: cannot connect to 2607:ff68:100:10::37 (2607:ff68:100:10::37) 80 [www]: Permission denied
If this indeed says “Permission denied”, they still haven’t.
Hmm… not working on mine

But i see ipv6 on Vnet0

You do not have IPv6 there, ::1/128 is just a local-loopback address, like 127.0.0.1 in IPv4.
well then they did not add ipv6 to my VPS however i dont need it eitherway
We don’t add by default IPv6 Addresses, you can request IPv6 addresses by submitting a ticket.
If use tunneling such as miredo it seems to work, however miredo takes lot memory… or use another that use less memory, I haven’t test another to my VPS though.
May I know how long they setup the VPS?
We will start setting up orders in the next 10 minutes.
“The promotion code you entered has been applied to your cart but no items qualify for the discount yet – please check the promotion terms”
So Far for the “this applies to all their packages *NOT* just Linux VPS”…
Got mine.
@Constantinos : Thanks for the quick setup. Just curious, how many hours a day do you work? coz I can get you almost anytime :) And any chances that live chat will go live?
LOL, the last sentence sounds a little bit contradictory, supposing you’re worried about Constantinos health xD
LOL Ya Im feeling the same after reading it again :)
I try to work as much as i can :)
Usually i work 16 hours per day but it depends on how much work my staff leave me with :)
User your whip on them! You’re the boss hahaha.
Setup was pretty quick.. but the VPS control panel is Hypervm and not Solusvm..
HyperVM is not common nowaday
CP never an issue for me, as long as i could start, shutdown, reboot, rebuild and have console access I’m content, well as long as it’s secure…
After i read some wht thread about hyperVM, I have change my opinion, now i feel it would be better to use something else..
I know HyperVM is not very popular and is also buggy and with important missing features (eg. a way activate TUN from the control panel) and we’re planning to migrate over to SolusVM in the new year.
HyperVM has some features that SolusVM does not, like a file manager which is great for temporarily breaking apache when it uses 100% of your RAM.
Does anybody have Test-IPs for US and NL?

Waiting for some similar in Europe ^^
Sorry for the delay in replying.

Well, just for information :
If the Promo Code is expired after this month, maybe we can use another promo from the URL ( https://hostrail.com/promos.php)
By using WHTOFFER or Lowendbox, we can get 50% recurring
Anyone believe it?!
just ordered and waiting activation ;)
I got VPS from them and it is pretty nice.
TUN/TAP works.
They don’t support FUSE, well too bad.
Ordered and waiting for activation. Nice blowout offer
They don’t have instant activation
It’s 3*100 MHz, not 300 MHz –> as far as I understand it, single threaded applications are… well… limited :)
No, 1-threaded apps are not limited.
If you read the previous post comments, you will find a discussion about that.
http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/hostrail-1-20-256mb-openvz-vps-exclusive-offer/
Too expensive for me :)
I have ordered an VPS 2 Power Units package about 4 hours ago. And still waiting!!! (invoice no. #HR2010-3552) Don’t know how long I have to wait.
Got that. Set up after 8 hours. Still have no problem. Enjoying.
@Constantinos, many customers are waiting for activation. Hurry up dude.
Relax, it’s not pizza.
I saw the current amount of pending orders. Our Network Engineers are working on getting more Subnets routing to our servers – they will be done shortly and once they are done we will continue once again activating orders.
Apologies for the delays guys, we’ll get everything sorted out ASAP.
And more servers set up too, right?
Yep new servers are getting setup continuously to deal with the demand.
If i order the smallest vps can I make it my backup space for my Main VPS? or is that against your TOS?
Yes you can do that
Awesome news man.
We can have 2 little VPS for control panel, backup and DNS and mail server, and a larger one for your web hosting or application.
Example:
2(two) 1 Power Unit = 2×1.05 = $2.10 (after discount) – Control Panel, backup, DNS, Mail
2(two) 3 Power Units = 2×3.50 = $7.00 (after discount) – Main Server + Mirror
Total = $9.10
So, for less than 10 bucks (thanks to Constantinos for the promo) you can have a redundant, fail save system. (Remember, their VPS are also fully managed)
Redundant, failsafe, on the same network, with the same provider? I’d hardly say it was either redundant or failsafe. You could even end up with all your VPSes on the same node…
When ordering just two, I think you can easily request them to be set up at different nodes… Most providers will understand the need and do that with no issue. Now, if you would order a hundred VPSes, then having each of them on a different node could be not possible :)
True rm, but it still leaves too many points of failure so close together. :/
In practice, especially for mission critical clients, I outsource it from different providers.
But since there are many VPS offered are cheaper than shared hosting, for non regular website farm it is a good practice.
For example in my first cluster, I use 1 Micro – Kansas for NS1 & 1 Nano – Atlanta Ns2 from ramhost, 1 VPS-256-oLEB for NS3 and web server from Nixcom, and 1 V384 for mirror from Virtuallydedicated.
example: http://www.intodns.com/infokarawaci.com?
For other cluster I use GarmanOnline + VPSTree + Hostrail + VPSSquad.
Must…Buy…Cheap…Vps…
i just signed up. how will i login and use it?
Ordered the 1u mini going to use it for backup storage and maybe a small wordress blog just to see if it will hold up.
maybe in some cases it could be cheaper for backup, but I have discovered that backing up to amazon s3 is much, much cheaper. I store essential data (package list, db dumps, copy of /etc and /var/www) from my vps there every week with a cron script and my monthly bill is only $0.01! it could only be cheaper if it were free really. and I think amazon storage is way more reliable than any conventional vps host.
i think there is a bug in cart – i have added two vpses to it by mistake and there’s really no way to remove one of them. :)
3 hours and still waiting…
I just posted a reply right now (see my last post)
Pending Orders Update:
Our VPS Activation Team is getting prepared to continue setting up orders in 20 minutes or so. We expect to set up 85% of the orders in the next 1.5 hours and the remaining 20% or so of orders will be setup in approximately 3 hours.
We will setup orders in the way we received them – first come first served basis.
We apologize for the delay and are working quickly and hard to get everyone setup.
Awesome.
Thanks in advance.
Ok the final go ahead has been given, we are starting to setup pending orders now.
I was choice openvz with centos 5 but I get OpenVZ with Red Hat 5 (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.028stab070.14PAE)
:( :( :(
Just rebuild the OS of your choice from HyperVM…
I think you should change your website design, it’s kind of lame lol :D.. but the vps is working fine :)
I don’t think so, because it’s one of the best designs to be integrated along with WHMCS
Anyone from the full node can share a test file? The one from there website has a very decent speed, but I’m sure it should be smaller on oversold nodes.
My VPS is on the node “one.hostrail.com”.

Just set it up, it seems decent enough right now. OS rebuilds seemed pretty fast (set up Ubuntu minimal which is +1 for having), network speed seems good at 10M/s with cachefly. I’m guessing it is still undersold as I got it this morning, but as a cheap backup and test server for 1.75 for their 2 unit vps, I’m happy.
Apologies for the delays in setting up orders, we hit a issue with the ARP with the new subnets as we were setting up VPS’s so we paused – we have now resolved the issue and are continuing to setup VPS’s.
Why do you provide directadmin licences for a more expensive price than cPanel/WHM?
We have a better deal with cPanel than with DirectAdmin at the moment which is why – for cPanel we will even further reduce their prices in the new year.
Nice to hear that you wil reduce the cost for cPanel. However you could checkout DirectAdmin code500 licences you could get them as a hosting company for 5$/licence. Most VPS providers offer directadmin a lot cheaper than cPanel.
I opted for the pricey 2 Power Units one this time :)
As others have said, it’ll be interesting to see how this goes….
Got my 1U server a couple of minutes ago, setting it up now. It’s really slow, my Atom box is more than twice as fast for CPU-bound stuff, but it’s also dirt cheap! So I guess for testing or backups this should be sufficient. In any case, at that rate you can’t go wrong!
Which node are you on?
I suppose it’s one.hostrail.com
Thanks, mine is setup. Kloxo in a box only uses 20mb memory – Amazing.
Can “Kloxo in a Box” work with ipv6? Is it able to assign an IPv6 per site?
Nope Kloxo can’t assign Ipv6 for sites, at least not automatically.
In Kloxo we can add the AAAA record in the DNS template. Never try that though.
I ordered one, if i don’t like it I only lost €0,82 :D
A litle update:
I am installing the server and it’s sloooooooooow (like +30 seconds for an ls command in a directory with 5 small files).
At the moment it’s even too slow to log in using ssh.
I wouldn’t say these perform well, but they perform adequately for the price.
Terrible performance right now is probably due to all the new users on your node updating, reinstalling, benchmarking etc.

That’s my vps from the last offer, so the node has “settled down”, I guess. This is the kind of performance I see day to day on it. I’d hope yours ends up the same once the novelty of doing all the benchmarks wears off for your node-mates.
16 seconds to read 100MB, process it into a rar file then write it out is pretty decent for the price imo. Worth 76p. :)
It’s a lot better now.
If it stays like this I am a happy customer, we’ll see!
The first couple of hours after we setup a server and we start filling it up with new orders its always slower than after – this is because everyone is at the same time logging into their VPS, updating it, rebuilding it, installing software etc. Always gets better as time passes :) as people start going to sleep or going to work or do something else – depends on what timezones they are in.
Moreover, there are also quite a number of people who are eager to run benchmark tools that consume quite an amount of resources.
I wonder what this latest promotion means for customers that signed up for the previous offer. My VPS is on europa.hostrail.com suffers from delays on a somewhat regular basis. w, ps aufx, and other basic commands can sometimes take as long as 5 minutes to bring back a response.
Sorry — 5 seconds, not 5 minutes!
We’ve been trying to add more RAM to Europa for at least 1 week now – unfortunately our Datacenter run out of RAM Modules and we’re waiting for the shipment to arrive some time this week so we can add the additional RAM to Europa.
Just bear with us for another 48 hours or so, we’re trying our best to get Europa upgraded to improve speeds substantially. Last update i got was by mid-week this week the RAM Module should arrive, assuming it does we’ll be upgrading Europa as soon as it arrives.
We’ll keep you updated and we’ll send an email once we’re ready for the upgrade to take place as it will require the server to be taken offline for a couple of moments while we put in the additional RAM.
Just curious – how much RAM is in europa now, and what will you be upgrading it to?
want to order next vps from host rail
uhmmm..very nice offer…i have just ordered one waiting for setup now ;)
Yeah it was slow, but now it seems to have settled down, mine runs good.
Pending Orders Update:
We expect to continue setting up Pending Orders in approximately 3 hours from now, we are waiting for a new Node to be setup.
Subscribing :)
Ordered one and got it, so far liking it :3
Ok we will start setting up remaining pending orders in the next 30 minutes.
Pending Orders are being setup already.
Hi!
My testresults are:
It is fast enoght for me.

My power unit seems to be up and running, though hypervm cp @ one.hostrail.com works a bit sloppy. Default debian installation is way far from minimal. In fact it seems quite bloated to me. I have found in CP that there’s also a “modernadmin-minimal” debian image to rebuild with, but I’ve got no clue what modernadmin may actually mean. I also can’t seem to find a way to setup a reverse dns entry.
I think for reverse DNS we need to open a support ticket.
Yes for rDNS please open a ticket.
follow-up: debian-modernadmin-minimal is actually very minimal and very good for configuring from scratch. fastest mirror is http://debian.mirror.rafal.ca/debian/ (downloads about 3 mb/sec).
Quick google give me this http://modernadmin.com/downloads/?d=ostemplates/openvz it’s openvz template by xenvz.co.uk. I’m also using this template, it’s very minimal :)
If you guys need any other template, just open a ticket and we’ll get it uploaded ASAP. Two people if i remember correctly opened tickets and we uploaded the requested templates immediately and whats even better is that once 1 person requests a template and we upload it, it becomes available for all our customers.
How about a OpenVPN template, will that be possible?
Please anyone post the dd test and /proc/cpuinfo here..

Somebody else already did ‘dd’ in lowentalk.
Europa has an X3460.
The 2 VPS’s I have with them now are on Q9650’s.
Yes that is correct Europa is a X3460 while the rest of our servers are Q9650. Unfortunately our Datacenter run out of RAM Modules for X3460 therefore we had to order Q9650’s even though i wanted to order the X3460.
Do you allow IRC servers?
Does the “search on page” function not work on your web browser :)
All I saw was “Yes personal IRC Clients are allowed.”, but nothing about servers.
Constantinos wrote:
Yep IRC is allowed on the VPS’s.

Yep they are allowed
Hey,
I’m not going to tell my name, or who I am, but I have 3 servers with HostRail, 2 with cPanel and one with CentOS as a backup, and I seriously cannot fault them at all. I have admittedly had problems, and I’ve opened over 40 support tickets, and I’m sure they are getting fed up with me, but their support is superb and I seriously cannot fault them at all.
These guys ARE here to last, their nodes are plenty able to cope and they know EXACTLY what they are talking about
Keep up the good work guys.
Cheers :)
This doesn’t directly apply to this offer, but I ordered a .NL VPS last night, paid and I am yet to get any information about the VPS. I see that the staff has been active here since my order and I am curious why I have not received any information regarding my server. Hopefully this is taken car of soon.
It seems shortly after my post that I received an e-mail regarding the activation of my server and it seems that they are back logged because of lack of ips on their .NL VPS server. I was let know that it should be available by morning, I am anxious to give hostrail a try and will post an update once my server has been deployed.
It should have been deployed by now :)
I know there are 2 NL VPS orders from today that are pending from today, we expect to have a new Node at the Netherlansd Datacenter setup shortly – it has been ordered today morning and expected time of completion of the setup is 18:00 GMT +1 as i was informed.
Just ordered a NL VPS.
Hope you really are as good as they say! :)
I have an NL VPS with. It works just fine. :)
Pending Orders Status:
Onshore VPS’s: We’ve just started setting up a new Node just now to setup the remaining orders.
Offshore NL VPS’s: We setup some orders in the morning and we’re working on setting up the remaining amounts of orders.
Terms of Service page was a bit unclear for me. What stuff i can, and i cannot put on VPS (hostrail.com/vps.php) and what stuff i can and cannot put on Offshore VPS (hostrail.com/offshorevps.php)?
Can i get more information, what is offshore server, and what is diffrence between offshore VPS and normal VPS.
Thanks!
Your offers looks great and i might get my own VPS from hostrail :)
I’ll just past some stuff from our TOS Page:
Examples of unacceptable material on US-Based VPS / Dedicated servers include:
Pirated Software / Warez, Escrow, sale of any controlled substance without prior proof of appropriate permit(s), or any sites promoting illegal activities, IP Scanners, Brute Force Programs, Mail Bombers and Spam Scripts.
Examples of unacceptable material on Offshore Based VPS / Dedicated servers include:
Any sites promoting illegal activities, IP Scanners, Brute Force Programs, Mail Bombers and Spam Scripts.
So whatever is not included in those lists should be allowed, if you want to ask about something specific feel free to ask here to send an email to help@hostrail.com
So web proxies are allowed on US-Based VPS?
Order Setup and Support Responses are back to Normal now.
I signed up about two hours ago. I’ve never done a VPS before, how long does it usually take to set up?
Also, I had a problem with my domain name, I just created a ticket. Is that correct?
If i remember correctly your order has been setup, yes submitting tickets is correct.
Like another anon feedback here, I can vouch for their awesome support. Disk I/O is sometimes slow but I don’t mind at that price.
I want to order a few. Do you honour requests to allocated IPs from different blocks if someone orders multiple servers?
We currently manage around 20 different Blocks of IP’s so we can assign IP’s from different blocks upon request.
Thanks Constantinos. (Apologize if this sounds like “support” here on LEB: but, I have made my order and requested this in the comments. However, it might get ignored by the person who sets up. Could you please ensure it: Invoice #123099).
I think i saw this is in the comments and was actually wondering why the person who set the VPS didn’t read the comments. Can you submit a ticket and put Attention to Constantinos and i’ll sort this out.
What is going on with the terra node, it seem’s I am fighting for CPU power.
I’m already troubleshooting Terra, your Support Ticker had been forwarded to me
Ok, a few things I have noticed about Hostrail’s VPSes so far:
Even though they do not advertise the speed of the VPSes connection in the above deal, you should know that their VPSes are only on 10mbit (at least the .NL one I have). Maybe I am wrong to assume this, but most VPSes I have purchased in the past are shared 100mbit, or at least burstable, if they don’t advertise the speed directly. My sustained speed average to a 100mbit route 30-40ms away is 700-900kb/sec.
These guys have a great location for their .nl server, as the routes to worldstream.nl/kabelfoon.nl are very low ping to most of Europe, but so far I haven’t been able to take advantage of these great routes as 700-1000kb/sec isn’t anything to write home about. If your planning to use the server for a game server though, the ping times might be very attractive.
The staff has been reasonably helpful during the setup process, as good as you could expect when your spending sub 10$. However, when I purchased the VPS I made sure to to add to the comments that I would need support for /dev/tun and instead of it being enabled per default, I had to request it be activated via support ticket. The setup of /dev/tun then took an additional 4 hours before it was activated. Most replies to support tickets average about 2 hours, sometimes more. The staff is very polite and with the bulk orders they are handling, I can see why it might take them a while to get to the support tickets.
I must point out though that the .nl VPSes without their 65% discount are a good deal more expensive than the .US box. The lowest .US package (without the discount) is $2.99 while the lowest cost .NL VPS is $9.99. So without the 65% discount, I may not consider the .NL VPS worth the money, especially at only 10mbit.
At the current time, I am unsure weather I would suggest Hostrail’s VPSes to others, but others may not be as picky about some of the things I have pointed out. Anyone looking to setup a simple website might be incredibly happy with their services, as the limited bandwidth and the need for /dev/tun may not effect most people with such criteria. I just wish these guys would disclose on their website the speed of the connectivity of the VPSes so you know what your getting, especially if you intend to purchase larger amounts of bandwidth (they offer the option of up to 800GB or more a month I believe). With my server I purchased 600Gb, which may or may not be as useful as I once thought.
Overall I give these guys 7/10.
The servers are fast, the I/O seems pretty fast, and I have no lag to the server even from the US. Though, the bandwidth limitation to 10mbit and their sloppy setup (No instant activation,/dev/tun not being setup) leaves a bit to be desired.
NL VP’s are limited to 10mbps due to Abuse, upon request we can increase it to 100mbps.
Typo:
NL VPS’s are limited to 10mbps due to Abuse, upon request we can increase it to 100mbps.
Nice! Just submitted a ticket :)
Update:
After a little talking with support, as posted above, the vps was upgraded to 100mbit! As I mentioned before their .NL servers are located on worldstream.nl/kabelfoon.nl are very low ping to most of Europe and since the upgrade to 100mbit I am now able to get up to 5MB/sec sustained! I must hand it to these guys, every hurdle I have had they have handled. It may have take a little longer to get things going at the start, but the support has been on point in the long run (even if it takes them a while to get to you).
I must amend my previous rating of 7/10 and say with the bandwidth upgraded to 100mbit, I feel safe saying they deserve at _least_ a 8/10. There are still some hurdles with setup and the time it takes to get to support tickets, but overall staff has been very helpful. With the current promotion the VPSes is hard to pass up. Now, lets just see if they are able to stay around for a while and make it in the long run!
Well, I have 10 mbits yet. Anyway, at this moment I don’t need that speeds :P
May be later
a note for everyone,
This business is owned by a Cypriot , Cyprus people are 99% rich, I mean real rich , you can not compare with any other country in Europe, and you won’t understand what I’m saying unless you go there
the guys are backed up with good $$$$ so those people are to last , Good luck
My experience with Hostrail has been overall positive. Their support is very helpful, responsive and polite. My VPS is in Germany and even here 5K miles away I still get a pretty decent ping. Their packages are super reasonably priced. In fact, one of the reasons I haven’t moved all my ops to their servers is because I can’t see how they can be a long-term viable company by having their packages so incredibly inexpensive. I love that I can have a small army of 4-5 VPS around the globe for pennies on the dollar; however, I have to trust my business to someone with a proven record and prices that are in-line with a good profit margin.
In short, I would highly recommend HostRail to anyone with some know-how (because there’s little handholding) and without a mission-critical deployment.
I started out C & C Advanced Online Services Ltd back in April 2007, my company was providing cheap web-hosting to residents of Cyprus (Europe) as a start. In June 2010 i bought up HostRail with the aim of providing cheap web-hosting and VPS’s for the whole world. We’ve managed to stand on our feet for nearly 4 years now with these prices.
I’m not planning to close down nor sell HostRail any time while i am still alive (at least) so i can provide you my personal guarantee that HostRail will be here for many many many years still.
Did you write this book -> http://www.amazon.com/World-Mathematics-Constantinos-Coudounaris/dp/142511136X ? :)
Looks like someone did some Google Research :) Yep that book is mine.
OMG! Constantinos is my hero, now is my example to follow xD
Nice to know someone in IT does books xD and not only computers :P
Constantinos, thanks for taking the time to answer. I will stick with you guys for a while for my personal stuff. If my good experience remains after a few months, I’ll consider migrating more of my business to you guys. There’s still couple things I’d like to see implemented:
1) DNS management (of domains bought through HostRail) within the client area.
2) Community-driven help (blogs, wiki, articles, etc.) The last two VPS companies I’ve worked with have these and it works really well to unload some of the basic support stuff off your shoulders.
I’ve been working on the blog and wiki, they both need some finishing touches and they’ll be ready.
Regarding DNS Management i will check with my developers and plan to add something in the client area.
@Constantinos
Some questions regarding offshore (DE/NL) plans:
1. Links to test files in DE and NL ?
2. What’s the Burst RAM (only dedicated is listed) ?
3. Any backups included?
4. CPU speed dedicated / burst ?
Thanks,
EJ
I can say..
1. I only know an german test IP, not an nl test ip.
2. No burst ram.
3. In offshore, solusvm says 5 backups
4. Cons says, unlimited CPU, well in my offshore I have 1 core of an E7200
Thanks for the info.
I don’t so much need a (ping) test IP as I need a download test file, in order to check transfer rates.
If you have a link I’ll be grateful.
EJ.

We are setting up a new Server to accommodate the new orders we received today, we expect to have it online very shortly.

Network:
Download speed varies widely, depending where you’re downloading from, and routing. From within the USA, I can see between 500KB/sec to 1200 KB/sec from ‘average’ ISP home connections.
However connections on tier 1 backbones can see anywhere from 1M/s to 10M/s! :
This is from same geographical region (a Datacenter in the same state) as their server and the transfer rate is from Hostrail is incredibly fast:

I tried running it, and basically got tired of waiting. If you're going to be doing anything even remotely CPU intensive then look at higher power unit plans (much higher). No complaints here, for a dollar and change, what do you expect? :)

As stated above, support is very good!
How did you get unix-bench to compile? My gosh I just spent about an hour trying to get the thing to compile to no avail. Sigh.
I don’t remember having a hard time getting unixbench to work. I think I did the following:
#yum install gcc libXext-devel
#wget http://byte-unixbench.googlecode.com/files/unixbench-5.1.2.tar.gz
#tar -xvf unixbench-5.1.2.tar.gz
#cd unixbench-5.1.2
#./Run
What errors are you getting?
@Constantinos – Mathematics! Not as easy as ABC, but that explains something. Have you ever been a teacher before?
Nope i haven’t been a teacher officially at least. Unofficially i helped a few times at a school some years ago.
Any idea when the orders from this afternoon will be filled?
Both my orders were filled in 8 hours or less. They are growing as we speak, so you need to bear in mind that they need to provision the servers as demand increases. They’re not so big-name that they can have a bunch of servers idle waiting for orders to come in.
Dear sir
i have purchased 1 power unit vps before but due to always late service response i have gone to wooservers and i got better service than you especially in support response time….i want to back to your server but again the question is that service support response……
can you please clarify me?
I am happy with the support I have received so far.
I have received the following response times so far:
* Pre-Sales question sent @ 11:12am EST, response received @ 2:16pm EST (2 hours and 4 minutes elapsed time)
* Support ticket submitted @ 11:13pm EST, response received @ 11:42pm EST (29 minutes elapsed time)
* Support ticket submitted @ 12:25am EST, response received @ 3:05am (2 hours and 40 minutes elapsed time)
I am testing their services (benchmarking performance and support levels) and for my needs, the provide a very good vps service for a very low cost. After my initial test, I will probably be upgrading to a higher plan.
I received this three times now. :(
Hello,
This is an automatic notification to inform you that our one of support agents will shortly reply to your ticket. We reply to tickets in the order we receive them.
Apologies for that, we’re working on clearing out our Support Queues as fast as possible.
just place an order. has been 8 hours and still waiting.
If its not setup it will be setup shortly. I just finished from a meeting with our head of our Network Operations Center Team that also oversees pending orders
I don’t so much need a (ping) test IP as I need a download test file, in order to check transfer rates.
I found this (dunno where it’s located though):
http://speedtest.wdc01.softlayer.com/downloads/test500.zip
But yes, it would be great if hostrail would have this file on each of their locations.
Terra, we have a problem:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/simfs 34G 14G 0 100% /
none 192M 4.0K 192M 1% /dev
I opened a ticket 1.5 hours ago, before it went this far… alas no reply.
No wonder Terra has gotten dog-slow in the last couple days. Full HD = slowness. Constantinos, a suggestion: maybe you can cajole your engineers to have max HD fill to be 50Gb less than HD max capacity.
HyperVM is supposed to inform us when a hard drive is above 70% capacity so that we can take steps immediately but no notification managed to be sent because we had 100GB fill in in a matter of seconds.
Today we are moving some VPS’s to the other hard disk that we added so that speed gets back to normal.
How does a VPS node run out of disk space if you don’t oversell?
It is silly not to oversell disk space (especially if it is an expensive RAID10) by at least 50% margin, most people on VPSes will never ever use more than 3-5 GB and that’s including the OS, from their 15-50 GB allocations.
So when you hear “not oversold”, just think “not oversold noticeably” or “not to the point of service degradation”.
Sent a ticket in to get a TUN/TAP adapter and required modules enabled for my VPS, got an answer back claiming the module(s) had been enabled but no word on TUN/TAP, and no new devices on ifconfig show up.
I might be having difficulty getting OpenVPN getting set up because this is my first time doing so that I’m actually going to be using it, but at least I got 3 new interfaces in ifconfig when I installed it on a local machine.
Any advice from anyone? Should I submit another ticket about TUN/TAP or do I just have no idea how OpenVPN works?
same here dude.. :(
Ok, try this
mkdir -p /dev/net
mknod /dev/net/tun c 10 200
chmod 600 /dev/net/tun
And try
cat /dev/net/tun
If shows permission denied or… no such device, tun isn’t working.
If shows bad file descriptor, is working n_n
Permission denied on me. :(
Ask for them to enable it again, i have this issue before and i asked them to check it and it works now.
Same here, let them deactivated/reactivate it.
I use TUN/TAP to get IPv6 via a tunnelbroker.
In my experience, if you have asked for /dev/tun to be enabled, and they tell you it is and it still doesn’t work: They have enabled /dev/tun in the VPS control panel but not inserted the actual module into the kernel. I would suggest in a support ticket that they check that the actual module has been installed into the kernel, when I asked for /dev/tun I had the same issue and thats how it was solved.
Just send us tickets until TUN is activated :)
Ticket #430822.
why I get HyperVM instead of SolusVM (as LEA mention above)? Is there anyone else also having the same problem?
In USA I have HyperVM, in offshore NL I have Solus
Agreed, Hypervm is major failure ;_;
Planning on moving to SolusVM for all VPS’s in Q1 2011.
I see, can’t wait for that. Bloated, hvm is bloated <_<
HyperVM works well for me… I just need two buttons, start, and stop xD
So i am happy to announce that i have confirmed that many of our competitors (that also advertise here in LowEndBox) decided to also order VPS’s from us (i won’t mention any names). Its nice to know that they want to test our services.
Interesting!
Well, just keep improving your services, and your company will be THE company for VPS’s.
haha.. as long as they don’t *rape* the vps on purpose ;)
btw, do you have any plan for xen/kvm?
I am planning on setting up a server to offer XEN and Windows VPS’s – i can promise that we’re targetting to release these at maximum by the end of January 2011 – however i am looking to make a small surprise and release them earlier than that if its possible.
haha i’m pretty sure we aren’t ordering anything :) by the way congrats for offering cheap VPS hope you find some profit from it so you guys can sustain your business… I promise we will never ever compete with you at this price point :)
Yup, I expressed my concern with the low pricing in this very comments page. I’m giving them a try with one VPS offshore and one in the US for a month or two. And as I previously told Constantinos, the price level makes me way too nervous to trust it my mission-critical stuff. While I understand economies of scale and that labor costs in Cyprus (their home base) might be considerably cheaper than in the US, $4/month for all these great specs, his company cannot be making all that much money off it. However, he has stated that his company is 4 years old and is now expanding westwards. So, let’s see how it works out.
Well, as I said before, small companies will close trying to compete with Hostrail. One nice option to stay can be by reselling the services :)

I forgot that I also install mesa-LibGL-devel. Try the following:
#yum install mesa-libGL-devel
and then the instructions I gave before….or modify my previous instructions to include mesa-libGL-devel such as the following…
#yum install gcc libXext-devel mesa-libGL-devel
#wget http://byte-unixbench.googlecode.com/files/unixbench-5.1.2.tar.gz
#tar -xvf unixbench-5.1.2.tar.gz
#cd unixbench-5.1.2
#./Run
Cool. Will try and report back.
On Makefile,
comment this line:
GRAPHIC_TESTS = defined
like this:
#GRAPHIC_TESTS = defined
You don’t need graphic test on vps.
@Circus was correct. Dunno why I didn’t think of that myself. sigh.
Commented the line and it worked like a charm.
Anyone here using this super cheap VPS? I need it only to browse net and MOST importantly, those holding this service, can you login to google account? I need it to login google adsense account to check my earning only.
Thanks
I have two VPSs on this deal – one in the US (4 units) and one in Netherlands (Basic). I’m very happy with both so far, and the support has been much better than many other inexpensive providers!
Thank you Constantinos. :D
Hi John
Is it possible to view web on linux vps? and also logging into google adsense account?
thanks
Maybe he is using this vps as proxy?
Latest News: XEN VPS’s to be released in December 2010 – we’re moving quicker than expected – stay tuned for the launch of our pre-ordering system to pre-order XEN VPS’s :)
Start pre-ordering?
Is nice to hear that, if the price is good, I may consider moving something to one of these xenys xD
What kind of xen, pv or hvm?
In a previous post it says Windows VPSs, then, must be HVM, and maybe some PV for linux.
I hope it’s HVM with ability to mount your own iso. crossing finger..
From what i’ve seen ts XEN HVM – our main aim is to provide Windows VPS’s – we’re experiencing some delays with Microsofts licensing – i hope to clear this out.
do you have a simple way to pay via credit card? i tried alert pay but it is too complex..no idea how leberty reserve work, perhaps they need an account as well?
4PU (US) Benchmark results: http://pastebin.com/rgthrxm0
I just purchased 2 VPS’s from them.. a 5 Power unit one and a 3 power unit one (for backup of the 5unit) and I must say, so far I am impressed.. Install took a while (6 hours) but considering the amount of orders they must have gotten thats not bad.. I opened a few support tickets and all where answered within a reasonable time.
I can’t say too much on performance yet, but all seems fine so far..
What I can say is their support is slow. I already receive a few automate emails. Seem like no 247 support (both tech and sales) from them. Or maybe they are too busy to deal with many orders.
Apologies for the delay, we’re trying to reply as soon as possible and avoid the automatic emails which are sent both to the client and me and the rest of the managers and staff to alert us that a ticket is waiting for too long.
There are times where we might start working on the issue reported in the ticket and respond once we have resolved it – i saw a couple of tickets being dealt with this way today.
Constantinos,
Can you please answer some questions / provide more information:
1. Please provide links to test files in DE and NL.
2. One of your customers reported that there’s no Burst RAM. Will you consider enabling Burst RAM in the future? It doesn’t cost anything, and only provides temporary performance boost when RAM is available.
3. That same user reported that only 1 CPU core is available? Is this true also for the higher offshore plans (ie. NL/DE Platinum)?
4. How long will the promotion last? I would like to check your XEN plans before I make a final decision, but I don’t want to miss the promotion…
5. Will the promotion be valid to the XEN plans as well?
6. Will you XEN plans offshore (NL/DE)?
Thanks,
EJ.
When we launch our XEN Plans they will have a special promotion for the first month or so – the promo will be completely independent of this once.
Regarding Burst RAM we are discussing to enable Burst RAM on all VPS’s at some stage, we’re just thinking of how to do this so we don’t mess up everything. We have servers we 2 Cores, 4 Cores and 8 Cores currently. The servers with 2 cores are the Offshore ones, the Onshore have either 4 cores or 8 cores.
At first we will only offer XEN for Onshore, if all goes well then we will setup servers in NL with XEN. Due to not much demand for DE i don’t think we’ll setup a XEN Server there unless something changes.
Constantinos,
Thank you for your answers, but you skipped some of the issues…
1. Please provide links to test files in DE and NL.
2. Answered.
3. Amswered.
4. How long will the promotion last? I would like to check your XEN plans before I make a final decision, but I don’t want to miss the promotion…
5. Answered.
6. Answered.
7. In case the current promotion will end before the XEN promotion, I’ll sign-up now. Will you let me switch to XEN plan if I see that it better suits my needs?
Thanks,
EJ.
Hi,
Just want to clarify if you guys need to wait for at least 2 – 5 hours to get your ticket answered?
I have opened 5 tickets so far. The longest I have waited is 10 hours. Is it normal?
@Constantinos, please see #649299
Thanks,
Hendri
I checked your ticket #649299, and have forwarded that also to Rob our Support Manager so he can look into it in more depth and see which agents were on that day/shift.
10 hours is certainly not normal.
Will be available promotion for Offshore VPSes? I’m instersted in NL VPS.
I see on your site, that promotion is available, can You provide links to test file in NL?
Promotion code will also work with offshore vps. I know because I orderd one.

disk problem on titan (it’s a 2 power unit vps i use for NSD, backups and a few small websites):
vps2:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 2397.6 s, 14.0 kB/s
it’s sooooooo slow today that even editing config files with vi is a problem.
Costantinos, can offer a node where torrenting and disk trashing is not allowed ?
Same thing here, also on titan, simply running top – or anything else, honestly – takes a few seconds.
We found a abuser and suspended him as i am seeing in yesterdays report.
come on, today (09 utc) it’s still slow:
vps2:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 149.252 s, 225 kB/s
anything below 1MB/s is too slow. So i guess there’s still someone torrenting, or you’re swapping too much. Can you pls investigate.
and, seriously, will you please offer a node where torrenting/rapid leeching etc are not allowed.
i’m sure many ppl here use their vps for backup, testing, sometimes navigating (ssh socks proxy) from the office, dns and hosting a few small sites.
i’m willing to pay the same price for a smaller vps (less traffic included) if there is a zero abuse tolerance policy.
give less (so heavy users don’t stop there) and enforce a stricter policy. On a separate node.
i’d love to ‘migrate’ to a 2PU-noabusers with
50GB disk
100GB bandwidth
384 ram
0.6 cpu
at exactly the same price (4.99 with the great 60% discount) if you can guarantee good neighbors. And i’m willing to pay in advance for 3/6 months.
Maybe you should also search for abusers on hyperion. VPS located there is deadly slow and in practice unusable for anything.
Here is test for Titan:
[root@titan ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 10.6444 seconds, 3.2 MB/s
[root@titan ~]#
For Hyperion i just tried to SSH into it and its really slow so we’re investigating for Abusers.
Ok Hyperion seems a bit better at the moment (however Titan is better):
[root@hyperion ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 22.6954 seconds, 1.5 MB/s
[root@hyperion ~]#
here’s an updated node test for titan at off peak time (10 utc dec 17)
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 107.112 s, 313 kB/s
yesterday it was fast for a few hours, after your support team answered my tickets and your post here. But now it’s getting slow again.
at 11 utc the node is really slow. It took me many minutes with a 2pu vps to do a tar cvz resulting in a 40MB files. And now i’m not able to edit files via vi.. too slow even for a small config file. Costantinos, can you provide vps with strict no abuse policy?
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 1340.5 s, 25.0 kB/s
What happened with titan in the last few hours ?
new abusers or just too much oversell ? (by the way, the small 1pu i have on terra gives 20.4MB/s at the moment, so the problem exists only with titan)
I wait for the vps :)
someone know how much time need to wait? :)
It should be setup, currently we only have 2 pending orders .
when do I get my vps setup? I ordered 4 hours ago.
It should be setup, currently we only have 2 pending orders.
It’s so sloooooooow. I now that it’s only 1.75$ but i would like to use it for something else thant ping.
In which node are you located at?
Odd thing, I just saw that 321hosted.com uses the same hostnames as Hostrail for VPS nodes, and performed CPU upgrades on the same day…
http://www.321hosted.com/clientarea/index.php?fuse=admin&view=PublicAnnouncements&ann_id=4
Same servers different branding I guess. 321hosted.com VPS1 = Hostrail 2 Power Units.
“Constantinos wrote:
So i am happy to announce that i have confirmed that many of our competitors (that also advertise here in LowEndBox) decided to also order VPS’s from us (i won’t mention any names). Its nice to know that they want to test our services.”
Connect the dots. :)
If i am not mistaken 321Hosted.com is a reseller of ours (although i can’t confirm with 100% certainty)
Yes, I wasn’t very clear in my post — I guessed it was a shared hosting provider that branched into VPSs by reselling you.
BTW, I don’t know what you guys did with Terra over the past couple days but it’s good :) Disk performance has improved dramatically. Thanks!
We added a new 750GB hard drive to Terra and are fighting to migrate around 50% of the VPS’s to the new hard disk.
Here is the status of the hard drives:
[root@terra /]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup57-ROOT
672G 610G 28G 96% /
/dev/sdb1 688G 56G 598G 9% /mnt/secondary
[root@terra /]#
We’ve been fighting all day today to free up space on the primary hard drive, we managed to reduce it down to 85% however it went to 96% around 1 hour ago. Currently one tech and myself are working on Terra (i don’t want to get too many techs helping me with this) however if disk space doesn’t improve on the primary hard disk i might need to “borrow” some more techs so that we can get the moving completed quicker.
How can you provide CPanel/WHM with such low prices!
the lowest price I have ever seen for CPanel/WHM is 12$ (which u use). but after applying the coupon the whole VPS (+cpanel) is just 5$ per month, which is less than half the price of cpanel only!
How can this works!
anyway, ordered plain VPS for testing.. Setup time was good. Hope they are not Host scam.
I wrote this comment before sending them support ticket asking about this low prices, there reply was “Well this works fine for us :)”
I installed koloxo and created my first domain. first time on HyperVM and Koloxo. It was a little bit slow, but anyways, the 1.75$/month is a real deal!
This has piqued my curiosity. Thanks to you. After you made this comment, I just checked it on their site. And now the 4 power units VPS with Cpanel costs just $9.95/month with discount.
This is just insane : If they had $5 Direct Admin License, then I could have bought a 2 power VPS with Direct Admin just for $3.5/month :D I would have purchased 5 VPSes and would have started a hosting company itself :D (I can do that on a small scale even now with the Cpanel offer :P )
I really hope HostRail just as promised by Constantinos stays for long long years, coz this is a Golden Goose for starters :)
Yes, I thought on that before… HAHAHA!
In my country the hosting companies are so so bad…
We managed to get some special prices for December from cPanel/DirectAdmin which have enabled us to offer our 65% discount.
Any idea on when the Xen boxes will be available and pricing?
Just ordered 5 x 1 power VPS servers.
I expected they would fail, die, be horrible….. wow how the hell do you maintain a profit at these prices the servers run like a dream.
I bench marked them against my other VPS servers (I have about 30) they actualy out performed most of them in a fair test.
@Constantinos: thank you :D
cant wait for solusvm+xen :D
True story between me and HostRail.
I bought a VPS from HostRail on Dec 10th. I tried in vain to access my VPS with SecureCRT after getting the login info on Dec 11th. I asked for their support on Dec 12th and they replied me on Dec 14th to let me use Putty. This was ridiculous.
I tried to access my VPS with SecureCRT with success just now, which means they didn’t care until PayPal getting involved.
I asked HostRail to refund money on Dec 16th because they have a “30 days money back guarantee” image on every page of their site. And they replied me today, “Refunds are not provided for monthly accounts as per our Terms of Service.”. So what does the “30 days money back guarantee” mean? Isn’t it a fraud?
I’d like to forward all the emails between me and HostRail to you if you let me know which email account to forward to.
so.. your beloved ssh client can’t connect while others ssh client can connect just fine, and you blame the vps provider?
Yep, and the biggest problem is that he never even mentioned the SSH client he was using so how were we supposed to guess what he was using? We understood after he provided us with a screenshot of the error message which he did more than 2 days after our initial reply to his ticket.
1 dollar, come on.
Well, at least you triead another SSH client?? Only for curiosity…
And you want to involve Paypal for 1.05? Is like buy water bottle in my country o_O (Ok, we don’t know what is your package, we are assuming is the 1.05 USD) I can pay you that 1.05 ¬¬
Why would it be the fault of hostrail? They have provided everything, what they have promised. It’s not their fault that your software isin’t working properly. And you should not waste your time to get a refund of one buck :)
PuTTY is better, and free. You’re complaining that your software was configured incorrectly?
A couple of reminders:
1) When you order a service from us there is checkbox asking if you agree to our Terms of Service, no image and nothing written anywhere else on our website is valid except our Terms of Service. If you didn’t read our Terms of Service this is your problem and not ours, additionally filing a dispute case in PayPal immediately voids any money back guarantee in any case.
2) We are not responsible if the client you used was not working
And because we don’t like hiding anything please find below the highlights of your replies:

Hi,
I tried in vain to login the following IP addresses via ssh:
74.63.255.195
74.63.255.194
74.63.255.203
I didn’t try the other IP addresses because I felt frustrated.
The username is root and the password is shown in the notification emails and https://one.hostrail.com:8887.
Please help. Thanks.

Thats all from me regarding this, we’ll see what PayPal says about this.
You don’t have a “No abuse of staff” clause in your AUP/ToS? We do. :)
I was under the impression that we had but after reading and re-reading the ToS i found out that we don’t have – we will be adding this in our ToS the next days.
I’m having a gameserver on the cheapest VPS, and it runs nicely, and clearly. Thanks!
What game server?
Tremulous server.
Hello Guys,
I buyed $1.05 VPS from hostrail, There helpdesk is very worst. Until they get money, they are replying properly to us.
I suggested some of my friends and collegues to buy this VPS. Now i intimate to them don’t buy VPS from hostrail.
Before buying VPS they replied properly in helpdesk, After buying VPS no response.
Can you inform me of a ticket id so i can check it?
Hello,
Just order one VPS on them.. Still waiting for the vps creation. (invoice 123690)
Anyway, how can we become your reseller? Any special price and requirement for it?
Thanks…
It’s been more than 16 hours since my order. My VPS isn’t ready until now…
Ticket also took hours to be replied..
Em…..
They are not able to solve the customer problems. Help Desk dead. If we pay for money for the the help desk, then they will reply properly i think. Then why they are giving assurance for free support.
“Support Tickets are free of charge as the VPS is fully Managed.” …lol…
For my vps they always answer in acceptable time.
What problems have you been experiencing?
I have 5 vps with them and they always responded tickets within 30 minutes.
One of the best provider out there.
looks like Hostrail fixed terra, but now TITAN is slow. Constantinos, did you take some resources from titan to make terra faster ? Come on, will you pls fix titan too, or move me to a better node? This is not customer support, this is a problem with your nodes! Ticket opened…
TITAN 2pu:
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 82.5689 s, 406 kB/s
TERRA 1pu
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 1.25005 s, 26.8 MB/s
Titan is even slower now. And theis thech support call this a “temporary problem”, come on Constantinos, respect your customers, this is not just a temporary problem, yesterday it was even slower (34 MB copied, 1340.5 s, 25.0 kB/s). Titan needs more disk/mem or less overselling or just move me to a node where torrenting/rapidleech/disk trashing is not allowed. This 2PU vps is the slowest i ever bought in my life. Fix it !
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 1081.27 s, 31.0 kB/s
an other ticket opened…
Have you tried
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 conv=fdatasync???
because this test is less intensive than oflag=dsync and may show a more realistic result.
In neptune I have similar issues with dsync:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
205+0 records in
205+0 records out
13434880 bytes (13 MB) copied, 58.5854 s, 229 kB/s
But with fdatasync:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=5k conv=fdatasync
5120+0 records in
5120+0 records out
335544320 bytes (336 MB) copied, 16.3245 s, 20.6 MB/s
A decent speed IMO.
Apologies for the delayed response here, i have been testing Titan all day today and here are the averages i got:
[root@titan ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 5.52199 seconds, 6.1 MB/s
[root@titan ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 conv=fdatasync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 0.910559 seconds, 36.9 MB/s

I’m not a customer of hostrail, but come on people who comment on i/o for 1 usd, quality shared hosting starts from a minimum of 5usd, now we have some 5$ VPS (such as from hetzner) that perform great with good I/O, but you should understand that not only ram is getting oversold, there are so many people on this HDD(s) of course it should feel painful to do even the simple stuff, but that’s what you are get for 1! usd.
Not everyone is on a sub $1.50/month plan. I have had my VPS since before they were featured here.
well, i spend 3usd per month with them, not 1, and when you have 25 or 30 kB/s (k, no M) i think i deserve a better answer than ‘temporary problem’. There’s a limit to overselling. And with such a low io it’s impossible to use that vps, unless you just do rapidleeching/torrenting so you don’t care about performance, as long as it works…
But finally they fixed the problem, so thx Costantinos.
(by the way, for 4,6usd per month i got a 6 months promo for a 512k vps at linode for a vps in the UK, and that’s even cheaper than hostrail eu offer.)
Omg, can you share that offer? Or is too late :(
hohoho
sorry Yomero, i just checked and it’s too late. It was just 1.000 discounted vps, all gone in a few hours.
http://blog.linode.com/2010/12/15/linode-100000-giveaway/
maybe you can ask if they deleted some for fraud and have more stock available.
Well actually it doesn’t depend on the number of people on a VPS – we have a server with approx 10 users and Disk I/O is really bad – its worst than all of the I/O speeds posted here – if a server doesn’t have any abusers Disk I/O is generally really good, unfortunately its the abusers who make the server slow.
For $1 I had to try it… that was 10 hours ago. Still waiting to try it as my account has not been setup yet…
Should have been setup by now.
The last coupon on hostrail is awesome DEC10CAN – 65.00% Recurring Discount
Hello,
Finally, got my vps setup this morning. I’m on one.hostrail.com node and using HyperVM.
May I know which one is better between SolusVM and HyperVM?
Thanks…
Well, it depends. HyperVM has more features, but is buggy (some people says) and solus is more stable, and minimalist, but less featured, what do you prefer? But as I said before, I only need 2 buttons, off and on (ocassionally, the console is useful).
Hello Yomero,
Thank you for the information.. :)
Ignore my last message (that is waiting for moderation), was from another hoster I bought a test-vps from.
Way to much email spam provided by HostRail. I don’t care about the state of servers on which i don’t have a package.
We apologize for this, we are trying to find a way in WHMCS to know in which Server each VPS is – up to now this is impossible todo.
I actually love all the communication. Thanks!
So much outages on all those servers AND I KNOW FOR ALL OF THEM! On daily basis! Goddamit…
Whats the avg time for them to get new vps up ? Site said usuualy under a hour been waiting 8 hours. Got a email stating they were adding new severs and that was several hours ago. Just wondering as I got there regular priced 24.95 service (got for 8 something a month sweet deal)and was hoping on getting things setup today… As I have no ip address I cannot countine to get any job related things done …
Apologies for this delay, your VPS should have been setup by now.
How Long does it take to recive the VPS after payment is received
i waited for like 8 solid hours.. and i just paid 10 hours ago..
I receive the VPS in around 17hours…
I am sure they are overwhelmed by the orders generated from this offer. I got it after exactly 34 minutes.
Yes we have some delays in setting up orders.
Can’t say enough good about these guys — especially for the price. They’ve been super responsive about issues and requests for both PPP and TUN being enabled (Both are disabled by default) – had a few IO issues and couple hours downtime due to a DDoS overnight but they were quick to resolve.
I can’t say abusers are a surprise at these prices but they’ve been pretty good about weeding them out. Wish these guys the best – thanks!
I;m poking around their website and ordering form. I can pay for three months on their 1 unit machine but not on the 3 unit machine.
Is that by design?
If you send them a sales ticket (I believe sales ticket) you can have them create a quarterly or yearly invoice for you so you know what you’d be paying for that time period instead of per month.
Thanks for the response.
Thats because i believe we forgot to update all products with their quarterly prices – we plan to fixing everything these last few days of December
I have 4 VPS with hostrail, and so far I’m satisfied with their service, and one thing that I know about them is that they always resolve my tickets and get the job done.
Some delays with the ticket mostly due to not every issue can be resolved immediately due to the nature of the issue.
I used to work with a ticketing system, and we handle an average of 500 tickets a day, so please allow me to expose a brief overview on how an issue is managed. In general issues can be classified as:
– general related such as:
knowledge base & how-to, this can be done by Service Desk Operator using their knowledge base system.
– account related such as:
client area login, CP login, password reset, add-ons, cancellation, package upgrade/downgrade, and new order. Can be done immediately by Service Desk Operator after passing the verification process.
– billing related such as:
late payment, revenue calculation (if you are an affiliate), billing adjustment (after upgrade/downgrade or adding add-ons), change of payment terms, and other billing issue with third party (Paypal, MoneyBookers, Credit Card Issuer, etc). This issue takes a little longer to handle as it needs thorough verification and calculation, usually done during their office hour by their Accounting Staff.
– service/technical related such as:
connection issue, network issues, performance issue, and other incidents. This issue can only be done by Technical Staff, either their own staff, Data Center’s Staff or Network Provider’s staff. Technical Staffs usually try to solve the issue through remote system, and if the issue recurring then they will try to look for a temporary workaround and escalate it to Problem Management Staff to investigate the issue thoroughly. If the issue related to hardware then it takes more time to resolve.
Please remember, the Ticketing System is only a SPOC (Single Point of Contact), however, issues are distributed to and handled by relevant staffs both in-house or outsourced.
Looking at the price/service ratio, I think HostRail has been very generous in providing a managed service for a very cheap price. :)
@Constantinos – Do you have anything to add? ;)
VERY unstable VPS, I can’t even turn it on sometimes.
I do NOT recommend hostrail.
In which Server are you located on?
Promo code doesn’t work on upgrading package.. :(
You need to contact the support and they will manually create the upgrade with the discount. Hope that helps :)
Yep that is correct – unfortunately WHMCS doesn’t do this automatically which is a shame but anyway just create a ticket and we’ll get the upgrade created and discount applied
Constantitos, Rob Kelly and his team are reasonable people. I think it is better for them to upgrade you and adjust the billing rather than you open a new order and cancel the other one.
However, you must be patient as their current top priority is to stabilize the system by adding new hardware and nodes.
The response to their offer is quite overwhelming, so what they are trying to do is to accept all orders and satisfy the customers, while adding the resources (RAM, HDD, etc.). So, when your system is slow, it means that they accept the order, but the space is very limited.
When there is a node down, it means that they are replacing a hardware, or moving customers from an overloaded box to a new box.
So as my friend Francisco Diaz from Franchtech.ca said, its all about balancing the need, services and customer satisfaction.
Nice…. Thanks… :)
Just wanted to add that there service is great! I origanly bought a 6 power unit with kloxo and thats it and after testing the waters I also got a 10 power unit fully upgraded with cpanel/whm and eveything is working great! Fast response to all my tickets including one where I acidently ordered the wrong part and the invoice systems shows the full undisscounted price but 5 mins after submiting a ticket I got a response and a detailed explantion on how when I got my acutal invoice I will be given the discount. All of my tickets have been answered fast quick and the serive is A++. My only regret is I wish I would of got the Cpanel-WHM on my other server insted of the kloxo I wish I could just cancle and reorder but its to much work.I tried upgrading while the promotion is still going on but it won’t let me as it won’t apply promotion codes to upgrades :(. Other then that which is my own fault ! I would highly recomend them to anyone looking for a vps or dedicated server!
Service A+
Techsupport A+
Quailty of Staff A+

just create a ticket to tell them u wana upgrade at a discounted price! i just did mine and i added cpanel-whm to it.
I did that and everythign went smoothly! :)
Anyone know if it is by intention that you cannot apply any discounts the WHMCS Im guesing so…
Happy Holidays Everyone!
I suppose its a missing functionality or maybe a bug in WHMCS – it should apply the discount automatically i think at least – anyway we do this manually until WHMCS implement or fix this functionality.
Merry Christmas to all of you!
I am working to reply to at least most questions posted here – it might take some time to reply to them all.
I guess a quick question since the talk of WHMCS. Does this disscount work on ordering it and others such as fantisco in the upgrade options “Will the discount go towards it?” or is it just the flat rate a month as the disscount does not apply to those services. Im going to be adding WHMCS to one of my servers and just wanted to check before I did so. As if you are applying the discount to those services I will submit a ticket and just have it added to my account but if not I will just buy it :)
Also since they had to manualy edit my accounts WHMCS is showing both my servers at the costs before any discounts each month do you have to manualy send me a invoice for the correct price each month or will I have to submit a ticket each month to have it corrected?
The correct invoice *should* be sent by WHMCS – if it doesn’t you can submit a support ticket and we’ll manually update the amount – also we’re going to send an email to WHMCS about this and some other issues we are having.
For WHMCS this 65% discount does not apply – we sell the WHMCS licenses nearly at cost price so we didn’t have any area for a discount
When does this Christmas Special end, i. e. how long will the promo code be valid?
Its valid until the 31st of December
@Constantinos
Can I get some personal help about an issue with my VPS? Because I can’t understand what is happening…
Ticket #199542
We will be checking tickets shortly, we just recovered from a outage on our website + support system so we need some time before we are back to normal
@Constantinos.
Have hostrail servers gone down? I cannot access my VPS or the hostrail site to submit a ticket.
All VPS’s should be Onlime, our main site is currently offline – we are already working on it.
my vps is up (prometheus)
my hypervm is up ( one.hostrail.com)
their website is down (www.)hostrail.com
Our website is back online
I cant access the website , looks like its down
Our main site is currently offline – we are already working on it
My servers are all up but there main site is down unfortunaly.
Our main site is currently offline – we are already working on it.
Our main site is currently offline – we are already working on it .
The server hosting our main site is booting up, we estimate that it should be online in the next 10 minutes.
Its back online
@Constantinos
I already order and paid my vps. Waiting for you to setup it asap. ^_^!
We’ll be setting up orders shortly – just trying to overcome the outage we had on our main website and support system
pedding
… still pending.
Woah nice! Already setup. And …….. unable to login ssh. I’m using both winscp and putty.
Please check my ticket @Constantinos . #667603
I ordered one for $1.05 yesterday. The VPS was set up within 11 minutes of payment – impressive so far!
If I buy a 1 Power Unit now and, after a satisfactory test period, upgrade to a higher plan, will the 65% rabate apply to the higher plan, too?
It is better to buy a 2 power unit it goes down to $1.75 or if you order 2 power unit + 0,3Mhz it will be $2.44 after rebate.
In my case I bought a 2 power unit + 0.6Mhz, so it comes up to $3.14 after rebate.
I’m using it to host http://www.chinesegadget.tk & 10 other more dot TK sites.
I just went thru this. had read to open a ticket to get discount when upgrading so I did. I also asked to go to quarterly billing. I received a prorated invoice (with discount) to upgrade for the rest of the month. I paid via paypal and was upgraded promptly. Later I got the quarterly invoice, and while it showed a discount, the amount was wrong. I updated my original support ticket stating error and they apologized and fixed it. Looks like in the future the correct amount is set to be billed. Overall a good experience.
Same in my case too. But the support is very efficient.
Yes that is correct
By the way, I have got a 2 power VPS with cpanel. The WHM loads and runs a bit slow. Is it because the RAM is just 384 mb? But HyperVM shows RAM usage as 190-210 mb. They advised me to go for additional 256 mb RAM before the cpanel installation. Can anyone suggest me if the existing configuration is fine or should I go for a RAM upgrade?
And one more thing is my CPU sharing is given as (0.2ghz * 4 units). If I get it changed to(0.4ghz * 2), will it improve the speed of WHM or should I go for an additional CPU unit also. Any help is appreciated.
I intend to run 3 wordpress sites, 3 MyBB forums, 2 advertising scripts and single html page to park few of my other domains
WHM eats quite an amount of resource you need to have more CPU power, and if possible minimum of 512MB RAM. That is the reason I’m using Kloxo for my personal sites and tweak the web server & mysql.
If you intend to have less than 10 sites, I think you can do it directly from SSH.
Thanks a lot for the info.
Well i’ll state it again that im a total noob to VPS and dedis. Will start learning soon. I am very comfortable with cpanel. And many forums have threads saying that Kloxo is very buggy and has a lot of security issues. Though I personally dont know about them, I want to play safe. Since the 2 classified sites need to be very secure, i want to opt for CPanel.
So then you suggest me to upgrade the RAM and the CPU units? Is it the CPU units or the power? Coz power means i will have to upgrade the whole plan itself.
And can you please tell me if there will be any significant change about CPU sharing. I mean is (0.2ghz * 4 units) better or (0.4ghz * 2) better?
Thanks for the help.
512MB of RAM to run a couple of personal web sites, is this LEB I knew or what? :D
See http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/wordpress-cheap-vps-lowendscript/
If you actually know what you’re doing (and with VPSes you should), 80 MB is more than enough for your tasks.
Ya I have tried that on my $1.2 VPS and works fine :). But my main query is about running CPanel/WHM with 384mb RAM. Coz my 2 Power VPS works fine but WHM takes time to load and execute stff from the interface. So needed some advice :)
I picked up one of these cheap boxes to have a play around with. Performance is understandably poor and highly inconsistent.
Serving a test linux ISO seems to come down at around 900-2MB (and varies like a bitch). General performance is very slow sadly but what do you expect from a cheap vps ;).
I’m planning to use mine as offsite storage and a proxy.
In which server are you on – if you can submit a ticket we’ll check it.
I’m on ‘one’. Obviously it would be great if the VPS was operating reasonably fast but I dont expect mircles.
My only concern is a simple tool like top for example, the display only updates every 3-4 seconds which is very odd
I’m one server ‘one’. I can totally appreciate that speed is a “premium” but it would be great if it was responsive.
A good example is running “top”, the screen only updates every 3-7 seconds (there’s a clock). That makes me think the system must be under major load (CPU time is getting shifted around a lot).
I just got an email from these yo-yos about a DMCA complaint against “my server”. I closed my account with these guys TWO MONTHS AGO. And I never had any mp3, movies, or any copyrighted material on there anyway. So obviously their record keeping and accounting is competing with what my 3-year-old daughter can do.
As to the original reason I dropped their service, the disk speed & cache were so pathetically slow the server was unusable. It would take 5-10 seconds for simple commands like “top” and “vmstat” to start.
Ok and is there any need to make a fuss about this?
The system did a mistake – we repaired this mistake immediately.
Yes you did correct it immediately, thank you. I just thought it was funny. Things like that don’t look good for your company, but I can tell you guys are working hard. Maybe I will try your service again in the future once the performance issues have been conquered.
Phobos vps freakin slow!!!
Phobos Server is half crashed from what we have diagnosed – we are working on this already
When it will resolved? Hoping for the best support from you @Constantinos
Guys some updates:
1) Support Department is experiencing an overflow of tickets the whole day today – response times are really slow and we apologize for this. As such i am staying all night to help out
2) Netherlands Server Phobos is currently half crashed – we have requested a reboot of the server
3) Pending Orders will be delayed as our primary focus is tickets and servers phobos.hostrail.com
The phobos box only hosts the “offshore VPS” servers, right?
If the normal “VPS” are hosted on that box too I might have to order one :).
@Constantinos: As far as I know, my VPS is in Pandora, the control panel is in Phobos. I have really big issues since 21/Dec. The server is really slow and my support ticket is getting really long. If ther is nothing to do about that, I prefer to cancel that VPS and get other in Germany.
I really hope you read this because I’m getting desperated xD
Sorry, I know this isn’t a support page but, at this moment the support isn’t working for me =(
Regarding Netherlands VPS’s we have taken two big decisions:
1) We have ordered new and more powerful servers with the aim to replace all current servers. Server Phobos was acquired when we bought a VPS Hosting company in August 2010, its not a very powerful server – only has 2 cores so definitely needs a replacement ASAP.
2) We are becoming a RIPE Member and as such will have our own IP Subnets to use for Netherlands and Germany as such all IP’s of the VPS’s will change to our new ones once we have them. This will be done in phases to avoid any downtime, we will first add the new IP’s to each VPS then customers will be given 7 days to update DNS records etc. Phase Two will be removing the old IP’s and ensuring that the new IP’s work.
Do the VPS servers run both Shoutcast and Icecast. Trying to decide whether to switch mine over to from Shoutcast to IceCast. Does anyone know.
Well seems like their main site is also facing problems.
Mine vps just crashed and when i checked the hostrail website then saw a message as critical error and failed to connect to a server.
My VPS is still up and running (still very slow). Site is also down for me.
Mine VPS is running but there main site is down need to do an order. Hopefully it is back up soon. Need to keep my clients happy.
Lol seems like i took the wrong vps deal.
Site is down getting 500 error on control panel.
vm shows 0 ram and no diskspace.
What to do now?
Are you new to the Internet or something? Send them a support ticket :eyeroll:
Hello,
Thought I’d post a positive comment. HostRail gave me the VPS 6 Power Units plan (180GB Disk Space, 1.2TB Bandwidth, 1.8Ghz Processing Power, 768MB RAM) free for the life of the company for generating them some sales on a forum board and forwarding their Christmas email to LEB.
My VPS has been running fine.

Fast network speeds.
I’m on the Terra node.
Keep it up HostRail!
Terra Node is our best node and by surprise its an Intel Core2Quad Q9650, we were actually discussing how good this node is performing yesterday with our provider.
Vps is back again now.
Hope it would properly now.
No problem with my 2 vps’s

Taking a gamble.
Am buying a 2 power unit on last day of promo, which is today :)
Well at $1.75/month it isn’t a high-stakes gamble :)
Actually it isn’t a gamble at all IMO, I’ve been quite satisfied with my Hostrail VPS.
Got it about 8-9 hrs after payment.
Initial impression is disk responsiveness is a fair bit better than YardVPS Leaf 3 (which I dropped due to bad I/O).
At this price, absolutely no complaints.
It is about a week now that I have the VPS and it has been good going. No downtime that I found, good responses to support tickets though in some cases it took several hours, possibly due to the overload mentioned above. Bumped myself up to a 2 power unit for an additional 70 cents (blush) yesterday and it was an instant upgrade. Good work, Hostrail! I just hope this is the stable state and remains so.
Now, if only I could get the same setup in Europe DC for the same price – it would be bliss for guys like me in Asia!
Well you never know :)
Keep visiting LowEndBox or our site or both :) – we might have some changes prices in Netherlands and Germany.
I’ve been having a play with this VPS as a squid proxy. First impressions are generally good, considering the price.
Some worrying stats though, here’s a basic DD

Uptime has been spot on since I purchased the VPS. That said, I’ve seen nothing but emails/tweets of them taking servers down or dealing with drive issues etc. Not on my node luckily but I hope these issues settle down.
Ironically the I/O is the only thing holding these little box’s back. They seem quite capable of serving files, they could make excellent mirrors for downloads.
Finally, customer support. They responded very quickly to my tun/tap request which is excellent. For good or bad, they’ve been very good at informing us of any issues.
Overall, if they can sort out those niggling IO issues they’ve got an extremeley attractive product. I just hope they (as an obviously small, relatively immature) company lasts through the blizzard of tiny vps without caving in to huge overselling.
My throughput is not nearly that good, especially the vps’s upload.
I’ve tried it from 2 networks and get about 500KBps.
I have opened a ticket and they say they dont throttle the bandwidth
Maybe I am doing something wrong
What kind of throughput do you get from this link on my vps ?

Excellent speed via a server at DimeNOC in Orlando.
@mike.hat . Hey thanks for posting. shows that it is possible to get better throughput. Maybe it’s a routing issue which is limiting me ? My physical locations are Indianapolis ( comcast ) and Pennsylvania (1and1/perfora.net)
@Miles
Please see my article about proper use of dd in benchmarking :) http://romanrm.ru/en/dd-benchmark
Also, I should say that 53 MB/sec is not a “niggling IO issue”, it is an extremely good I/O (if it confirms once you retest as described in the article). I/O issue is when you have 500 kbytes per second there (as some people were having earlier on some HostRail nodes – but that seems to be fixed long ago).
Hi rm, good article.
A retest shows:
miles@secmiles:~$ dd bs=1M count=1024 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync
1024+0 records in
1024+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 51.9581 s, 20.7 MB/s
…for the price, great but in real-world terms that’s very low. Still it’s enough to allow you to saturate a 100mbit interlink.

thanks for checking it for me. I am on their prometheus server. I wonder what server the OP getting good throughput is on? I can get better throughput by using more threads/connections. with Ubuntu I am using a command line download accelerator called ‘axel’ and can saturate my 3MBps cable line with approx 6 threads. BTW I upgraded to a 6 power vps ( mainly for the bandwidth allotment) , but it didnt help my data rate.
Like I said I opened a support ticket but they say it isnt throttled. I saw on a demo for hypervm it has the ability to throttle the Uplink traffic, but again hostrail said they dont throttle it ? I get the same thing whether using http, ftp, scp protocols. If I could get 3MB per second it would be super. Another thing is the upload rate is not stable and pauses for 10-30 seconds at a time. If I try to stream a movie from the vps, there will be 2-5 instances during the movie where I will have to wait for the bucket to fill up again :(
Time to move on perhaps? :)
There are other providers than can give the bandwidth you require at the price you’re paying now for a 6 PU (8-9 bux?)
We don’t do any throttling – we know that HyperVM has this feature however it is set to Unlimited and we don’t plan to use it at any stage
@randy perkins: forgot to ask, can i have your VPSID (you can find this in HyperVM) so i can check your VPS?
Constantinos, Thanks for following up on this. Things like this and your ‘Happy New Year’ email giving us an update about hostrail.com demonstrate you commitment to growing your business. thanks
my VPSID is 9514
I had closed my earlier ticket but can open up another one if you need more details about my location/ip’s/etc. Seems like at least one person is getting good throughput from my vps , so I dont know if he just caught it at a good time or if something else is going on.
I am checking your VPS speeds myself.
very cool, thanks.
I currently am downloading a large file from my vps now using a single thread/connection. It is a wget http connection and my throughput is ~300K/s . I could have used a download accelerator with 10 threads/connections which would have saturated my 3M/s cable modem, but I didnt so you can check this out.
Now earlier in the night you may see a higher upload rate because there were many threads/connections attached to the vps. the SUM of these threads throughput is good, a single thread is not.
I opened a new ticket on this issue #926881
thanks
Randy Perkins
40% [==============> ] 351,990,792 223K/s eta 35m 54s
well that file finished so I went with another one and used the download accelerator. Now no matter how many threads/connections are used the upload rate from the vps doesnt get above 1M/s . :(
still not resolved. every few days i get an update to the ticket requesting information, but nothing is getting accomplished. latest message didnt even make any sense. i think it was from a new customer service rep.
Well just to follow up. nothing has improved.
they close the ticket every 2 days.
they as me to run some ping tests and traceroute tests, then dont comment on results.
they ask if i have access to a windows machine , then never follow up.
they say they are going to move me to another node, and never follow up
Constantinos posts on here that they lost the user database for the openvm interface and that we needed to request a username/password. I request that and dont get a reply.
https://one.hostrail.com:8887 still doesnt have a valid certificate.
did i say the close the ticket every 2 days.
just to follow up:
my throughput issue has been resolved. got an update to my ticket saying I was moved to a new host. I can now saturate my comcast cable modem with a single thread from my vm. 3MB/s . got ~7MB/s from a shell at a 1and1 hosted account. thank you
Still have the same ip but a reverse dns still shows me on my old host. more than likely just a dns configuration or maybe they made the change and but it hasnt propagated out yet. no big deal. It just confused me for a bit.
still waiting on url/username/password to administer vm. https://one.hostrail.com:8887/ still running on self signed cert and my old username/password are invalid.
hey I’m a happy camper . thanks Constantinos .
not sure if posting here helped, but it sure didnt hurt.
thanks again and good luck
I got my username and password so all is good. thanks.
Does your afliate program require a min ammount in the account to use it towards the balance of a curent vps?
like you have to have $50 min to use any of the afliate money earned?
It does not for me. Yesterday I had $1.05 in it and used it to buy another 1 power unit VPS.
Constantinos, any update on ticket 343223?
“The Kernel version we have has a bug that does not allow TUN/PPP to be activated.”
We updated our servers with a patch and we activated TUN/PPP on all VPS’s who had requested it at the time that there was the bug.
Is the hyperVM down? I can’t access it (one.hostrail.com)
I am on one.hostrail.com right now. working fine. Of course hypervm is on nonstandard port and via https. sometimes i forget the https
https://host.domain.com:8887 is standard to access HyperVM and https://IP:7777 for accessing Kloxo if you have that on your VPS
Not sure if this related to your problem, but my node enceladus.hostrail.com has been down 3 times in the last 12 hrs. Obviously when that happened I wasn’t able to load HyperVM either.
Hopefully they’ll sort out the issue soon.
Yes the node enceladus.hostrail.com is suffering from a rather weird problem to say the truth. The first time it went down it was due to an OpenVZ Bug so we can at least get the server updated with a patch to fix this issue however the other two times were not due to anything (?) – all Level 2 & 3 Techs and myself are fully concentrated and troubleshooting enceladus.hostrail.com to locate the problem. We’re looking into log files, linking events and drawing several diagrams and flow charts to help us pinpoint exactly what happens before the server goes offline. We’ve fixed a couple of things already that could be related to this.
The HyperVM panel didn’t have any outage unless you are node on enceladus.hostrail.com and where trying to access it when it was offline.
Sorry, it was my fault. Forgot to put the https :P
i wonder why people would still be using HyperVM.
It’s free? As in free cheese?
My VPS not upgraded. My VPSID is 9098 .
My VPS not upgraded many times, still not upgraded, i submit ticket but not fixed.
Are you rebuilding your VPS or something? I had personally looked into this yesterday and you had been upgraded fine however after some time (after you said you rebuilt the vps) the package limits got lost again.
yes, i rebuild, i tesing server.
sorry my english not good.
Please upgrade it, i’m waiting …
I am going to renew and try for another month.
@Constantinos:
Suggestion for support ticket page there’s product related info, so there’s Date, Departement, Subject, Product/Service, Status, Urgency. Also in view ticket.
Hello,
Just renewing my VPS today…
I’m, pretty satisfied with HostRail.. :)
Hello,
I ordered a VPS (VPS 2 Power Units) 13 hours ago, and still didn’t get the server… I also opened a ticket : no reply yet.
How many time did you wait to get your vps ?
I paid the invoice 13 hours ago for another 1pu plan and don’t have the login details yet.
Just to put it out there. I’m surprised at the uptime and quality of service for this price.
It has been excellent from day one. Better than my other, more expensive VPS.
Even though im stingy, i’ve just bought another VPS closer to home for testing purposes :)
Is Jupiter down for the last several hours, anyone? I don’t see a twitter update and my ticket (899440) is yet to get a proper response – is it just me or everyone else?
I hope the DDOS yesterday is not repeating itself today.
Ok, this got corrected – looks like an offending VPS affecting the server.
Incidentally, Hostrail sent an email today about support improvements – looking forward to those.
hypervm broken
Ok, I think two things…
1.- They have notified via twitter, and now via mail.
2.- Why do you need hypervm? ¬¬
I also got the notification email about hypervm node maintenance (one.hostrail.com) 2 days ago.
Although honestly it feels like beta vps due to lot of maintenance/month :D
1. i dont use twitter but through the twitter link on hostrail’s website is how i found out about the outage.
1a. last email from hostrail was at 5pm today and there was no mention of the outage.
2. hypervm is the tool used to manage my vps . My vps is not acting stable and I was going to check on it. hypervm is part of the service hostrail provides for me.
ok, i wonder why you are busting my chops for updating this thread about the status of hostrail’s service.
Yes, I know hypervm is THE panel for our vps’s, but I think the control panels are almost useless (ok, hypervm has a lot of features, but I don’t find a good usage for them). I use the reboot, shutdown, poweron buttons, and, the statistics about the network usage. (And that’s the way I found the outage, because I need my statistics xD)
And about twitter, well, I don’t use it too, but since I saw here about that tool to communicate the issues in the company, I check the link in a regular basis n_n.
Well, that’s my opinion. I hope they will resolve the issues or maybe will change the panel to solus.
Isn’t personal randy, just what I think :P
In other hand, my VPS’s are working well, a quick review:
1PU (since 28/Dec) = Full uptime, 0 outages, is a little bit soon to say something about this box.
2PU (since 30/Nov) = 22 days uptime, initial issues but all ok now. Casual I/O problems, but is better since they added more hard disks.
Netherlands (since 8/Dec)= It started well, then got SEVERAL performance issues, and after a LONG ticket, they moved me to a new node..11 days uptime now.
oh my mistake.
I did get this message a couple days ago about a planned 15 minute outage.
I like hostrail. they try to communicate well. I’m sure their execution will improve.
I just wasnt aware of the current outage and was communicating it to the followers of this thread. one.hostrail.com:8887 responds to html traffic so the outage isnt apparent. I was thinking i was using the wrong login information till I went to the twitter update page.
— what i got a couple days ago. maybe they had some issues ??
January 10th 2011
One.HostRail.com:
* Purpose: HostRail will be rebooting the Server in order to boot into a newer version of the Kernel
* Duration: 9:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. (EEST) / 1:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. (CDT)
* Affected Access: HyperVM will be completely inaccessible during this period. In Addition to this all VPS’s hosted on this Server will be offline. Lastly our one of our nameservers, ns1.hostrail.com will be offline during this time – no issues should arise as other nameserver, ns2.hostrail.com will take over.
In fact, there were a bunch of issues the last couple of days before the planned outage and after it. Apart from the hypervm that broke, there were times my sites went down or got too slow – DDOS one day, offending VPS’s another. Responses to support tickets got quite delayed as well.
However, everything has been restored and at least in my case the hypervm login was changed. In addition, there was an email broadcast from Constantinos that they had many tickets and hence were delayed to send out responses. He also mentioned about more support agents and true 24×7 support from Thursday on, which is good news.
I like the fact they acknowledged the issues and have the attitude to do what it takes to fix them and improve service, though the issues were not very nice. I would have appreciated more frequent twitter updates however.
Just wanted to briefly write somethings here:
1) We still have Support Ticket Response Delays but as said above this will get fixed with the employment of new experience Support Agents who will be working on a 24×7 hour basis, i even tried to get the new Technicians to start working yesterday however it was impossible unfortunately
2) HyperVM Problems – after a restart on the Master HyperVM, the database got corrupted and we were forced to reset all usernames and passwords – just open a ticket and we’ll provide you with your new username and password
Thats all for now!
Hey Constantinos,
Are you guys still accepting orders? Placed mine 14 or so hours ago. Can’t complain though, lol… just curious. I’m pretty excited about it ;).
Awesome, just setup, thanks!
Not sure why I can’t login to my VPS. Ticket has been created for this issue. Now waiting…
Very poor customer service.
I thought of trying a hosting account with them since the same offer applied to it.
Their control panel is having issues. They mention unlimited websites but you even can’t get a single one to work.
Customer service is crap, they sent me a one line response which was wrong in the first place. I would advise any new customer to wait for a few months before signing up. It seems their services are oversold and unsupported.
Ok. I finally got a helpful reply for customer service. My hosting plan is now working. There customer support should be getting better next Monday I suppose.
Hope things go smooth from now on :)
Vps down 2-5 hours now no reply from support this sucks
My 2 cents: Host rail servers are sometimes overloaded, but I have hardly had any problems with customer service. Although not perfect (75% satisfaction ratio), I found it much better than almost any other provider with similar pricing and better than even many providers with much higher price.
i was on a bad node, and after many tickets i’ve been moved to a faster one, terra. They had just bought a new hard disk, so therra was ‘the’ node.
first weeks were, now it’s slow as hell.
my 2 PU vps gives:
vps2:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 143.183 s, 234 kB/s
and this is too slow, unusable. Any decent vps shoud give speed above 10 MB/s, and even the cheapest vps are above 1MB
guess what, looks like hostrail, to offer better performance to someone other, moved me away from a good node (terra), to a worse node. (i have copy of messsages from hostrail staff i’ve been moved to terra)
…
21 175 ms 177 ms 176 ms leasenet-2.border1.dal004.pnap.net [216.52.189.34]
22 177 ms 178 ms 176 ms te6-1.bdr2.core2.dllstx3.dallas-idc.com [208.115.252.30]
23 175 ms 176 ms 174 ms terra.hostrail.com [208.115.247.98]
24 174 ms 174 ms 173 ms titan.hostrail.com [208.115.199.175]
maybe i’m wrong reading the traceroute, and terra is having new problems, again. BTW, i just checked my control panel, 1.3GB, and less than 60MB ram used, so i’m definitely not a heavy user !
You are on terra. The second-to-last hop is the host node. The last hop is you. Your reverse-DNS was set to “titan.hostrail.com” when your VPS was initially created and hasn’t changed after the migration to terra. Yes it looks confusing :)
Terra was doing OK for a couple weeks — until a week or so ago. Since then disk IO is again high and performance is crap. Hostrail will probably work to improve it a bit, then in a week or two it’ll go potty again. Such is life on a super-low-budget VPS. You either live with that level of service or move on.
As far as i know we have zero reports for bad I/O at Terra. I am actually very happy with Terra myself, i didn’t run any recent I/O tests as i didn’t find any issues with that.
So you’re the first two to report anything on Terra for at least 2 weeks now.
rDNS might be somewhat confusing however it had to be setup that way so we know whats what. The reason it is showing titan is because the IP Address you have was actually assigned to Titan however because we can use any IP on any of our Servers we used the IP in Terra.
Two weeks ago terra was doing fine. I was actually running a couple low traffic (as in 25 MB per day traffic) PHP/MySQL sites on it and they were fine. Then it started to slow down. I moved the sites. On the last day before the move, 1 in 5 mysql queries was logged as slow — with a 2-second slow-query-time. Load was over 1 with just me browsing a site. It was very, very painful :)
I really don’t mean to be critical of Hostrail. For a buck or two a month it just can’t be possible to provide a VPS that consistently performs well. I appreciate the time you take to reply here, and your honesty.
ok, thx for the info about the node, i understand i’m still on terra, but the node is heavily and badly oversold and now it’s unusable. I had a low traffic site i had to move somewhere else. And yesterday i even had problems with rsync. Looks like i’m not able to use my ‘guarantee’ ram, even for small periods of time.
nice to read in you funny email that you will employ 7 new guys for support
costantinos, besides the fact i simply don’t believe you will are going to have 7 new experienced techs working for you, why you don’t just buy some cpu, ram and disk, or oversell less your nodes ? I can’t care less about user support. Keep your servers in good orders and i manage my small vps, no need for support on a low end box.
going back to my message, do you plain to fix this oversold node ?
@vps:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
132+0 records in
132+0 records out
8650752 bytes (8.7 MB) copied, 103.543 s, 83.5 kB/s
vps again down 2 times in the same day bad service
I have 2 VPS’s as i wanted to compare if all the nodes were of the same quality, both VPS are unbelievably slow and in honestly too slow for use.
Anyone have an experience with the Offshore VPS?
Maybe the Premium or Extra one?
I want to try it
I’m on pandora in the Netherlands:
13:48:04 up 36 days, 13:47, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
up sinds I got it.
It’s a basic + 256mb ram.
Ok, I am more disappointed than frustrated with the downtime – the server has been down for hours and support is too slow. They finally offered to move me to another node, but it’s been too bad already – time to move out.
Sad because I was hoping that with what I thought was the right attitude, Hostrail would be a game changer.
What node are you? mine working fine, although i’m only using it for personan vpn.
Jupiter, CPU and memory of the server spike up regularly and take the server down.
Mine is neptune, I just did i/o check..
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
236+0 records in
236+0 records out
15466496 bytes (15 MB) copied, 312.136 s, 49.6 kB/s
yeah.. it’s kind of sad.. :(
Terra today, and costantinos just wrote to me that they do NOT oversell !
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 4862.65 s, 6.9 kB/s
I think is is a record, i never seen such a low i/o, good to know there’s zero overselling. (at the moment it’s a rsync box, so no traffic from me)
We’ll I’m relieved to hear that Hostrail doesn’t oversell.
And 6.9 kb/s write speed is WAY faster than using pencil and paper.
So I guess we should be happy :)
6.9 kb/s ? Wow, you’re a lucky guy : I got 1.5 kb/s write speed…
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 oflag=dsync
512+0 records in
512+0 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 4.57704 s, 7.3 MB/s
Not awesome, but fine for what we pay.
6.9KB/sec I’d be complaining about though. :)
count=512 would last for hours ! Just look at those wonderful results :
# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=10 oflag=dsync
10+0 records in
10+0 records out
655360 bytes (655 kB) copied, 225.005 s, 2.9 kB/s
(which is twice more than yesterday !)
Damn! Please don’t use dsync ¬¬ Hostrail always will show that results…always. But the i/o performance doing general tasks is ok.
Let me see. I own a node. I go and throw a BIG dd. I/O stalled… and then you enter to the same machine…omg, is so slow, but there are only 2 clients! Oversold?
This happens in all the hosts. You can schedule cpu, memory and network, but i/o? I think is a hard task.
good suggestion Yomero, but when your node is too slow even to vi a config file, when you get used running nohup rsync & because even a small backup is a tough task, when you you have moved your small sites away from that node and the wordpress test page keep generating uptimemonitor alerts because of timeouts, you try to understand where the problem is. And dd is a good start. Hope you agree with me that
> 50MB/sec : Great (linode and other quality vps)
10-50MB/sec : Average to good, depends on how much you pay
1-10MB/sec : Poor, usually too much overselling
< 1MB/sec : Problems. VPS not working.
terra WAS fast, the same test gave speeds well above 10MB/s, now someone is trashing their disk (torrenters ? rapidleechers ?) and cpu, apt-get update takes ages and everything is stalled and support keeps telling it's a temporary problem, that they do NOT oversell. I guess with this kind of performance they have an offer appealing only to torrenters. And if you can't manage it, why offer so much disk space and bandwidth?
At the moment i think they have a problem greater than just this node slow i/o, hope they solve everything soon.
I have account with hostrail, and it rocks, their support is awesome, purchased one year package, i will stay with them if they will keep their services good and stable.
Now it is down, and more then 24 hours has been passed but no update from hostrail, btw hostrail increased 1 month for compensation but i think people wants uptime not compensation.
Hmmm, you’re in that ‘amalthea’ node?
No twitter updates yet :S
When a node is already overloaded with I/O jobs, running ‘dd’ test just wastes system resource doing nothing useful, and makes the situation worse. We often jokingly refer to this kind of things as trying to extinguish a fire with barrels of gasoline.
May I suggest that testing I/O with ‘dd’ should be used sparingly? If a ‘dd’ operation does not finish within 15 seconds, just interrupt it and open a ticket if necessary. Don’t let it run for hundreds or even thousands of seconds.
when a node is overloaded with i/o jobs kick the torrenters or loose your regular clients. Offering a lot of bw and disk space is not always a good idea, expecially when you’re not able to manage that i/o load. I had to move a few small legit sites away (kept giving errors) and even rsync had problems, so i’m trying to understand what’s costantinos strategy. I enjoy his mails telling he just enrolled 7 new full time experienced techs, but i think hardware resources and an offer NOT appealing to abusers are more important.
I accidentally found this http://www.wjunction.com/showthread.php?t=63985 they looks like a hostrail reseller, I hope this is not the reason why the i/o went downhill (torrenters, etc) :(
this is even more interesting:
http://www.wjunction.com/showthread.php?t=57644
Hostrail Webhosting – Everything including torrentflux/warez/rappidleech allowed
pity my VPS is not working for a few weeks now. (too slow, down for days, node rebooting every few hours.. )
warez allowed ? OMFG (sorry for my profanity).
Luckily, I’m on a very good node in the netherlands.
Maybe Hostrail should consider dropping there resellers on separate servers, because otherwise they inherit a bad reputation because of others.
I think that only applies to their offshore vps.
What else to expect from hosts that advertise with “OFFSHORE VPS” ?? :)
Not every country is subject to USA laws (DMCA and all that crap)
STAY AWAY. They oversold their capacity.
Just look at this: http://twitter.com/hostrail
Backstory:
Signed up for 2unit VPS last december. There hasn’t been a day that my VPS was accessible 100% of the time. Can’t SSH into server for 12 hours a day. Control Panel(CP) is unresponsive. Disk I/O is crap (~1Mb/sec) when I can actually SSH. But then apt-get takes forever.
Have 20+ support tickets. I complain, they fix it. Less than 6hrs later, it all breaks down again.
At one point I couldn’t login into CP, kept telling me it was wrong login/pass. Contacted support, turns out they changed login credentials and I had to email to request a new one. WTF????
My VPS has been moved from jupiter, to ariel, to prometheus VM hosts. It works for a bit at first, then unreachable. Have to contact support. I can see by graphs that the VPS is up and down every hour or so.
It is unreachable for most of the day.
All of the positive reviews here are clearly astroturfers, same “positive” reviews word-for-word. Just google for review of hostrail. Lies.
tl;dr: hostrail is crap.
i’m now on ariel.hostrail.com and i think this node has many problems too. I have access to hostrail monitoring service, so this is their downtime, mine is a lot more, because when the node restarts i have to manually log into the control panel to restart my vps. 6 node crashes in the last 24 hours. So i had to manually restart my vps 5 times, and now i’m waiting they restart the node to manually restart my vps for the sixt time in one day.
Recent Outages (ariel.hostrail.com)

i’m starting to wonder if they are a good candidate for the dead pool. Warez, torrents, rapidleech and nodes crashing every few hours when you’re not on a sloooooow node.
I’m not sure what you expect when they’re having to put anywhere from 150 – 200 of these to a node just to break even….
The server they’re using is, at minimum, $100/m. To cover that they’ll need upwards of a /25 of IP’s to get the job done, which is ~$100 at Limestone. They might be able to talk them into assigning them /24’s for around ~$150 but unlikely.
There are some very desperate limestone sales reps that are willing to cut good deals, but that only happens on their dual quad setups.
The big thing them, and every other Limestone hosting VPS company is going to have issues with is IP prices. Right now prices are at a reasonable level, if not free, but once IPV4 runs out in the summer, those prices are going to start going up, if not sooner.
The whole idea is a fun testing to see what the market is possible, but past that i’m not sure if people can get angry at them that their nodes are rebooting thrice daily.
Francisco
I don’t have any complaints about uptime. And IO wait has settled down over the past couple days, which suggests that Hostrail staff really are working on the issues. It’s an rsync box for me so it’s idle 99% of the time. When it does go to work the performance is acceptable.
Hello,
What scripts are you using for these pages?
Jack.
The status script is here. For the iowait I just hacked that script a bit to dump the numbers for load and iowait to a separate file.
Not having no problems over here all speed and io tests on my end and remote test have showed everything working great. As for the complaints above about warez and such that is only on there offshore servers they have to comply with the dmca on the US servers. Offshore it’s a differnt story not sure what your using your vps for but alot of clients who get shared hosting that are looking for offshore speficaly are looking for it to host a warez, jailbreaking, torrent or other such site.
I have serveral servers through hostrail and I did not get the 1.05 ones. I tested on a smaller vps for a month and moved alot over to there servers within the end of this month so far I have had only one downtime and I was emailed before it happned. Other then that the only slow down is waiting for RIPE and other issues related to there offshore servers getting alocated new IP address’s.
If you are having problems and don’t feel they have solved it send a ticket directly to there CEO Constantinos just put his name in the subject and he will directly reply and work on your issue if other support staff have not been able to solve your issues. I would have to say I have drove there support nuts I think I have around 30 tickets all technical or sales related and had each one replied to the same day (usualy within the hour at the latest for technical problems). Just the other day he personaly went through and readjusted all of my invoices to a differnt date which is not something they had to do but I asked to keep my billing inline with the due dates of my servers.
There support has been top notch for me and having many vps, dedicated in the past they have been the most responsive other then ones I paid extra for mangment at a data center which tbh was alot more then here. Also they have been overloaded by people just getting the 1PU server to test it to its limits for reviews or just to play with and alot of there support staff has been tied up with all those influx of people asking questions related to those servers which of course is something they probley expected offering such a deal.
I like it when I have a problem and the owner of the company goes out of his way to make me happy and get the problem fixed asap and thats what I have seen from them. Speed issues have not been a problem for me any problems they have fixed as soon as possible and a 65% disscount cannot be beaten in this market.
I look forward to staying with hostrail for the duration of my bussiness it would be regretable if I had to switch to another host who like all the others have no support and only care about there monthly payment.
Best Wishs,
Dale

Performance is really jagged for me, ranging between almost mediocre and just very bad. Repeating both your dd commands a few times, I can’t get more than 472 kB/s on the 64k test, sometimes as low as 43.1 kB/s. I did get 19.9 MB/s on the 6400k block size, but more often it’s like 4.8 MB/s. But it’s very jumpy, it can jump from 4 to 20 and then back from one run to the next.
What totally kills it is the iowait. Since I signed up 7 days ago, 20% has been the minimum anytime I try to run anything from the shell, and 90% is not uncommon at times. I’ve not really used it for anything, just the shell, some package management setup (the standard post-install updates and a few additions), and launching the occasional text editor to edit a config file, and the CPU basically alternates between two states: idle, or iowait. Launching vim on a small config file has taken longer than 2 minutes more than once, and I think around 5 seconds on an empty file is the fastest I’ve seen.
This 2 Power Unit system ($1.75) is completely useless for interactive use, it honestly reminds me of the days you used to be able to run Linux off a floppy disk (usually as a live system for installation). I can almost hear that floppy drive grinding whenever I hit enter on a command on my hostrails vps. It might be useful for a VPN or a server where most of the data stays resident in memory (and 384MB is above average for the price point), but anything that relies on random access is going to lag badly and if your use is interactive, like a shell, it’s going to test your patience trying to do absolutely anything.
In what node are you? I think you must submit a support ticket.
I find that every time my node(enceladus) is restarted after a crash, I have to log in to HyperVM and manually boot up my VPS. Apart from that, not other probs. 2PU $1.75 plan.
I have same experience, but at saturn node. Every time.
I first purchased a 6PU VPS from HostRail in December, and now have 1 6PU, 3 2PU’s, and 2 NL Platinum VPS’s from HostRail. Their support is really good (especially considering how cheap these are). Now you would think it would be the opposite, but the performance on their offshore VPS’s is much, much better than the onshore VPS’s. I have had 1 of my offshore VPS’s since December 13th, and the only downtime was about 30 minutes on January 31st when they were changing all of the IP’s. I wish I could say the same for their onshore VPS’s though.
This is from a 6PU VPS on pan.hostrail.com:
I am currently still waiting on a reply to my support ticket.
Thanks for this mini review. I was on a 4PU server and a bit disappointed with performance. Switched to an offshore VPS, paid a bundle more, and voila! Exactly what I needed!
I have a US Server and a offshore Server both have around the same specs but you would not know
I reqiure a US Server for most of my customers and I wish they could be put on the other offshore server.
My US server is so slow that im about to go elseware if it was not for the other server running so good I would have cancled allready. Im located on the pan.hostrail node for my US server and any kind of file transfer is under 10 kb/s which is the problem on my offshore its well over 80 – 90 mb/s ! I think they need to get this addresed before they lose alot of customers with a US server. And I cannot even get a support ticket open to get it looked at as there main website is down it must be on the pan.hostrail node!
PLEASE GET THIS LOOKED AT!
Randy
Their website was on Hipomenes node, which I have a 2PU on. I actually got good performance on that one, better than my 6PU on Pan at least. I am guessing that they were quick to take care of abusers since their site was hosted on it, but that is no more :(
Hostrail website is down.
http://twitter.com/hostrail
They’re moving it to another server apparently.
Hope it is back up soon. Not making clients happy
I am sadly starting to get disappointed with HostRail’s services. It seems like support is getting slower and slower. I submitted a ticket to the sales department on February 3rd, and it is now the 7th, 4 days later, and it still hasn’t been answered. The SALES department. I guess they don’t want my business. And good business at that, I was interested in their semi-dedicated/quarter-dedicated servers they mentioned in their email they sent out on January 1st, but not anymore. I have splurged and ordered a dedicated server from a different provider.
http://amalthea.hostrail.com is off for more of 24h
hostrail broke?
us works… amalthea (nl) down
http://sitechecker.eu/?http://amalthea.hostrail.com/
Damn! And is still down? :S
still down :S
While I do not have a VPS on Amalthea.hostrail.com, I am wondering why they haven’t fixed it yet? According to the page they linked to in the footer of their site, http://reports.panopta.com/hostrail/server/102031 , Amalthea has been offline for 3 days 10 hours!
As of now, I have had a sales ticket opened since February 3rd, and it is now the 11th, and it still has not been answered. The SALES department. I guess they really don’t want my business. Fair enough, I’ll just cancel a few of my services from them. It’s not like I can do anything with a VPS that takes 10+ seconds to complete an ls command in a directory with only 3 files or a VPS that randomly turns off 5 times a week.
Though I must say, my VPS’s on Pandora and Adrastea are still performing well. And my VPS on Hipomenes is performing well enough for $1.75. Perfect for DNS and maybe a few webmail accounts.
Server Amalthea does not host VPS’s, it was offline as it experienced a DDOS Attack.
got an update from them concerning one of their servers today. Thought, hey mine has been running well lately. Throughput is good. Response is good. Just wanted to post something positive for a change :)
My only issue lately wasnt related to hostrail.com I run ubuntu on my vps and was hit with this upgrade issue. When the sshd package was updated it replaced a config file and sshd would not start. Had to login via hostrail.com to investigate. It really isnt a bug in debian/ubuntu but the details are listed here. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssh/+bug/707098
Yep, my servers are great :D
But since yesterday I have I/O slow in Neptune. Nothing really bad for my services, but maybe I will submit a ticket if this gets worse. I have 62 days uptime. My NL vps has 51 days =) is the best by far. I have a 1PU vps, but I have restarted it yesterday.
Take a look at their availability reports here http://reports.panopta.com/hostrail
not very accurate per my experience
My servers have been great (I have 5 servers including 2 used for DNS) I have had problems with some IO issues and other related problems but once a ticket was submitted they addresed the issue and got it fixed within 24 hours! Other then that my servers have all been speedy and working great. If anyone has problems submit a ticket and give them the chance to fix the problem they are fast at addressing issues even when they are swamped with orders. I would have to say they have went out of there way for me and would have to say I think some people are just to impatient and do not give them the chance to address there issues.
I tested the waters with a cheap server and it had some hicups in the begging (hey it was only a buck) but after seeing how customer service was I decided to get a bigger server and the performance was great. I have US and NL server and for some reason the performance on the NL servers have been better for me. Running the linux benchmark that I cannot remember the name atm I had (the opensource one everyone uses…) my NL had a score of over 9000 which was better then my server in the US.
Overall I have been pleased and after the first month of service things settled down with all the new orders and they have got things in order. And there customer service has been great! My last host sent a automated reply and then got back with me and always looked for a problem on my end and would not research the problem at all where here they have went out of there way and will track down the problem along with me and if it is on there end they get it fixed fast!
For the price I could not have went wrong with the quality of service I have received.
Dale
Order placed waiting for confirmation 5 hours and counting.
9 hours got my fires reply form the support
====
Hello,
Apologies for the delay, we will start setting up orders shortly.
===
so…
Well, sometimes they get hammered with new orders.
I have some issues with support, maybe my english isn’t good or the tehcnicians doesn’t know what I’m talking about (I can’t access the vz console, and they responded me about my SSH service… ¬¬)
I ordered a VPS from them, they’re activation is not immediate… I’ve been waiting for almost two hours now…
LOL, frustrated.
Where says Instant activation?
Almost 2 hours on a $1.05/month VPS?!? Horrific!
… c’mon now …
I’ve purchased 3 dollar vps’s that were activated immediately.
Nowhere says instant activation
I have purchased 2USD vps’s with instant act too…
Have you read their ToS at https://hostrail.com/tos.php?
Cheapest and slowest VPS in the world. I have purchased 1 PU VPS first, but it seems too slow for me, and I have upgraded it to 4 PU. Nothing changed!!! I still seen damned slow VPS with huge memory, and I downgrade back to 1 PU.
I am on Oberon.
We sent an email addressing this and offering a solution last week – did you get it and did you open a ticket as per the email that we had sent?
Now opened ticket. It would be nice if you solve this issue.
Okay, I have opened the ticket about my VPS is very slow. They are move it from oberon.hostrail.com to one.hostrail.com, which is a bit faster. Good.
Now it has been moved to helene.hostrail.com which even slower than oberon. What a hell you are doing guys? I can’t even type in console because characters appears about 1-2 seconds after I typed. And time to log in is about 2 minutes.
I don’t want to pay these scammers even cent. My patience is over.
I have ordered an 1.05$ VPS, how much time for setup in this days?
We just setup any pending orders.
It took about 8 hours to activate my vps. I chose the lowend 2 dollar vps. So far that is my only complaint. I’ve used the vps now for two days and it’s been working great. Extremely low ping (it’s in Dallas,TX and I’m in Houston, TX). I just ordered a higher end vps, 6PU, will comment on performace etc later…
I had a 4PU VPS with them, performance was good considering the cost, support was always great.
Recently I have downgraded my server to 1PU and before that, I’ve asked them if my IP and files will be unchanged and they answered that downgrading will no effect my files nor my IP. So I went with that. They downgraded it, now my server is a fresh clean install, no sign of my 3 hosted websites. I have complained about it in the ticket, they closed it without answering !!
I am really frustrated with their support and service. If a downgrade means lost of files they should tell me so. And not answering tickets is … what should I say about it !! As I mentioned, their support was always great … I dont know whats wrong with them now!
Can’t connect to any of my VPS’s vis SSH… YAY!
Now I have missing disk space problem. Free space should be more than 20GB, but only 2.7GB available.
http://img717.imageshack.us/i/93015234.png/
I had exactly the same problem, so I contacted the support : 3 days later and several tries from their technician, they “moved” my vps to another server : Actually they dropped all my data, and gave me another (empty) server !!! I asked where were my data : they closed the ticket… :-(((
pan.hostrail.com where my VPS is hosted is down for a couple of hours now. Already sent a ticket.
one.hostrail.com seems to be down!
http://sitechecker.eu/?http://one.hostrail.com
They believe that LimeStoneNetworks could be experiencing a DDOS
http://twitter.com/hostrail
Their US DC are offline.
As a customer, I got their email about this :
Edited :
They are online now :)
Uptime’s a joke recently.

I know they had problems, but three unscheduled reboots in 24 hours?
Looks like at least one of them is a kernel upgrade. Or am I not reading that right?
Looks like it, yep. No notification beforehand, and still nothing since though. I’d expect to be informed about something like this. There’s been enough downtime that isn’t their fault, they could at least inform me about downtime they create.
Agreed. Although I’ve got to admit if it comes down to a tech deciding to spend his or her time working on an issue and posting about it, working on it comes first in my book. Fix first, announce later.
Since they’ve mentioned that they thought the routers were under attack, maybe they reassigned IP’s to those routers in an attempt to get them available again. I wonder if the reboots were done because a change of routing. (Could have sworn though that that’s just an edit which wouldn’t require a reboot.)
A fair point, I’d rather see something fixed sooner rather than later but it takes 30 seconds to fire off an email to those affected, surely not too much to expect. Still no email. Communication is key IMO, I don’t like being kept in the dark.
I just got a VPS with them.
IT IS THE SLOWEST SERVER I’VE EVER SEEN !!!
Installing PHP took more than half an hour !! And I failed to install joomla on it, when I enter mysql information at joomla setup, it seems to load for a while then crash. I can bet that my codes are okey. Even login through Putty takes awfully long time. My room mate recommended this provider, I am definitely gonna kill him.
Their support is horrible. I have submitted 3 tickets and no answer. I wonder if they provide refunds … I would happy to get it.
They have a 30 day money back guarantee. Check their Tos. I just ordered a 6 power VPS almost 12 hours ago, and no contact as to why it hasn’t been set-up. I understand that sometimes things happen, but would appreciate the knowledge that my money is at work. I shot them an email, I hope to hear back from them soon. As for now I remain optomistic
it been more then 18 hours since i paid, but my 4 power VPS still not setup, my bad i did not entered this promo so vps costed me 7.49$ :(
but i ordered at 18-3, paid at 19-3, and it seems they will setup that 21-3, so 3 days loss, i hope they will make their process better.
They’re in the middle of a datacenter move, that’s why they are taking so long to answer support tickets.
You can check their Twitter: http://twitter.com/hostrail
Btw, sometimes their offer is $1.05 ($2.99 – 65%) and another day is $1.40 ($3.99 – 65%). I don’t understand why.
There new datacanter is in Zurich, Switzerland.
Finally amalthea.hostrail.com is back online so my sites are running, i hope they will compensate against this outage.
But my vps is broken now, and no one dare to reply at hostrail, i think they are migrating one.hostrail.com too, but they did not announce that, still waiting for support reply.
Website slow like molasses and the support is taking it’s precious time to reply. There was no notification before the migration to a new datacenter, and now no notification for compensation.
People are losing their money and clients due to bad management.
What I’m wondering is… why are you running something mission critical on a $1.05/month VPS?
HostRail provides also more expensive VPS which are also slow as hell and unreliable.
One of my hostrail 1pu VMs generate PHP faster than my friend’s dedicated server and my old P4 server I have at home.
This is depends of node where your VPS is locating. oberon.hostrail.com and helene.hostrail.com are extremely overloaded, so all VPSs on this nodes are slow. One.hostrail.com is normal, so its VPSs has normal performance. Which node your fast VPS on?
These guys do not balance load of their nodes, so half of nodes are overloaded, and half are standing by. I can not explain this in another way.
ariel.hostrail.com is the one the fast VM is on, but I also have VPSs on:
hipomenes.hostrail.com.
oberon.hostrail.com.
titan.hostrail.com.
eris.hostrail.com.
mimas.hostrail.com
enceladus.hostrail.com.
Ticked opened for more than 24hours and nothing. Very bad and slow support.
This is absolutely ridiculous. Service and support that. I am losing too many clients over hostrails support. Have to find another host.
What’s ridiculous is relying on a $1.05/month VPS for your business. Use it as a test box, for one of several backup boxes or whatever, but nothing, NOTHING mission possible.
not everyone has “just” the $1.05/month VPS with them….
Well actually I am not using one the $1.05 boxes for my service.
Ah, so the service is terrible even on more expensive ones? I can understand support taking its time when all you pay is $1, but you’re paying a sensible amount for a VPS from them and it’s still crappy, jump ship.
I don’t have performance issues with my 5 $1.05 and 1 $1.40 monthly VPSs at HostRail. PHP generates faster on the $1.40/month one than any of my other VPSs from other providers or even my friends dedicated server.
I has 4 PU VPS which generated Joomla main page 5-10 sec. They even never check about new created VPS matches declared specs. They wrote about 4 PU VPS is “Great for any application.” But it doesn’t, it was created on overloaded node. I just wasted my money.
Please hostrail/Constantinos look in ticket #642032. I haven’t received an answer for 4 days.
Well, I like hostrail.
But I must update you all :P
Currently they are having several problems with their servers in USA. For some cause, they taked down all their servers 2 days ago. After that, almost every server was very very slow, and some servers have break hard drives (they said).
This time they used this http://facebook.com/hostrail to update the people, but as you can see, a lot of customers are not happy. Me included, but what can I do…
I have migrated almost all my stuff from one of my VPS with them, but now is down again (neptune).
I hope they will fix this, because taking down all the servers the same day was a big mistake IMHO.
I was a lover like you, but that is in old times (10 days ago). Dam it. It is making me feel sick by now and want to forget I have this one. Daily downtime! Al least 1 Day was 100%%% of grade A DOWNtime! And every day there is a decent amount of downtime. Some complain of HDD space lose and some complain of RAM lose, even crazy CPU overloads. WTH is going on? Are we all put on one node , or what? Is this the big fixing??? No, sorry!
And they are proceeding very very very very very slow in fixing this. Where they really abused? I don’t know.
– Previous lover
My Hostrail VPS wad working perfectly fine until they decided to fix it :) It’s been in la-la land most of this week. Hopefully they’ll eventually sort things out.
And using Facebook to update customers? Good grief. I want an update from the provider without having to wade through a wall of public commentary in 8pt text. It’s nonsense. A little more professionalism would be a nice touch.
It’s an offsite reporting system. Better than doing it on the same server the provider is located on. Better than some providers we have around here.
Hmmm, does seem to be a lot of crud on there. Clients complaining about tickets not getting responded to as well.
Yes, they killed themselves. VERY VERY VERY crappy service since they started to “fix” things. That were not a problem b4 the big fixing. Dam it.
Hosts like this one are very time-demanding and with constant issues non-recommended for any serious usage and from this point of view with 1$ and something.. they cost me more than some reliable but still cheap 3 – 5$ VPSes also advertized on those pages so I gladly cancelled it.
No more hostrail for me means no more constant issues with this host for me – which is ok. So what if vps work stable 2 or 3 months and then everyone say “they are actually great”. I prefer vps which give atleast impression that I wont need to open support ticket because VPS issues atleast 5 times till the end of the year and then hope that someone will answer me in some decent timeframe. And some of those I actually got from LEB offers.
I am actually impressed how many people there around still find them as “good host” while they evidently have issues constantly. I wondering how many LEB regulars really put in use all those VPSes and how many of them are just “tasters” which like to “own” something just because is cheap.
host like these are perfect as a rsync box. (and ssh tunnel). But keep in mind that a backup is not your only copy. YMMV
Well, is complicated.
Hostrail is good in some aspects.
They are ‘big’
They will not close I think
They are cheap (good network, space bla bla)
And for me, they had pretty good uptime, as you said, it worked fine the last months.
The problem with them, maybe the time response for the tickets, and some crazy decisions like taking down all their servers at the same time.
But every company has problems and make mistakes; I will remember here again Dreamhost. The end of 2010 was really crap. And they have THOUSANDS of customers, that were affected…
I just hope Hostrail will learn of this experiences.
I want to stay with them, because as marrco says, that boxes are useful.
Looked to me like waking up late and taking this decision in early morning, I felt it from the email I received that said “Big & Crazy” maintenance is COMING at you all, and in few hours. We will maintenance you to death don’t worry.
“This is a quick note that i am aware of the current Support Ticket Delays and have taken action to clear the queue’s completely tomorrow morning, a total of 28 Staff will be answering Support/Billing/Sales Tickets tomorrow – we’re aiming to answer all tickets by the end of tomorrow. Additionally 3 Support Engineers have now been made full time thus bringing the total amount of full time Support Engineers to 21.”
This guy seems to have big imagination… unless he operate DC with hundreds servers which he don’t…
And another mail:
I have the permission from our lawyers to finally inform you regarding the cause of these issues. After hours of investigation we managed to locate several important details on various of our servers regarding a close competitor who as a way for him to get new clients he has fallen so low and has purchased several VPS’s with the aim of abusing them to bring our servers offline and to cause inconveniences to clients.
I think that I will just filter/block their further mails…
Sounds like bs to me, trying to blame their crappy server performance on a competitor.
And “close competitors” are basicly all LEB vps hosts. One more or less… who cares.
ya, there is no logic behind it. If I was getting bad service from hostfail, there isn’t any specific company I would switch to.
So its either a) dumb competitor or b) made up bs story from hostfail.
I’m leaning towards b) unless hostfail comes up with the competitors name and some evidence.
There was some people on our IRC thinking we were the ones abusing them :) I think it’s funny these people think we’re competition to hostrail….
We’re not really competition to a lot of people here on LEB as we aren’t running your run-of-the-mill OVZ setup or anything like that. Lots of people undercut our pricing or duplicate it. So far I’ve not seen anyone pull it off.
Francisco
Fran, I don’t think anyone on IRC was thinking you were abusing them – the discussion was about comments to that effect here on LEB, and the unsubtle mockery of those foolish enough to believe you’d do that. (search for Aldryic and I discussing your Albanian/Bulgarian heritage for the details.)
Snape, huh? How can anyone take those lines seriously? Even with my (non-native and far from perfect) english I understand those few posts as pure joke.
Beside that this joke about nigerian roots started way before in some other older thread. I think that Francisco mentioned it by himself.
Where’s your sense of humour? :)
@Snape & @Spirit – I had a hand full of PM’s that I didn’t bother relaying to the channel that actually brought it up :P It was sad either way as I (generally) try to stay out of other hosts’ threads unless they’re deadpooled.
Francisco
You’re popular around so people will talk about you no matter what. Some will like you, some dislike but that’s part of this business. As long people joke I think that it’s ok :)
Where’s my sense of humor? O.o
Excuse me, I’ll go curl up with a warm blankie now.
Either way, they should be monitoring servers to make sure there isn’t one guy monopolising the resources. Warn him or boot him. It shouldn’t take this long to work out which VMs are putting the load on the boxes.
How many tickets do they have if it takes “28 staff” more than a day to sort it out?! And why was the situation allowed to go so far that they had to take on extra staff to deal with just the backlog of support tickets?
Jokers.
lol, now another email, claiming that the stability problem was caused by the kernel they were using.
“After working many hours over the past weeks i have finally found the solution to the high load averages that the majority of our Servers were experiencing. The issue all of the servers were experiencing was not easy to deal with which is why it took longer than i had hoped to resolve it.
The issue was basically with the Kernel version 028stab085.3PAE – we have now updated the majority of the Servers to 028stab085.5PAE and everything is returned back to normal.”
So what is it? Evil competitors or evil kernel?
There is a bug in the OVZ kernels that causes weird load readings and lag, I can confirm that.
If they were smart they would be following/filing bugs with OpenVZ instead of ‘talking to their lawyers’ about the ‘evil competition out to ruin them’.
Francisco
Yeah this is a total bust. My VM keeps getting rebooted. It also happened to get reimaged at some point. And networking is broken. I had a ticket open for 4 days before I finally decided to cancel it.
Constantinos also said, in an email: “more than 60% of our tickets are regarding slow servers so this is a big issue both for myself and youselves.”
He’s not joking. It took my VPS 6-8 hours just to install security updates. I promptly upgraded it to what was supposed to be a 600mhz CPU and it certainly improved, but it was still hours.
In other emails he claimed it was a DDos attack, not a competitor. So he doesn’t even have his story straight.
It’s even funnier. on Facebook: “All tickets have been answered, the tickets remaining require review from Managers which is why they haven’t been responded to.”
Really? You have a team of 28 staff, and not a single one of them can tell me the gateway I should assign so that I can get networking running? It’s really a simple, simple question.
(Yes, by default, when my VPS started up, there was no gateway assigned. I created a ticket and they fixed it themselves, but I never bothered to go look to see what it was. At some point, the VPS got reimaged and the default /etc/network/interfaces was back there, without the gateway. This is the ticket that hasn’t been responded to in 4 days).
Some customers have created hostfail.com. I think it is an apt name in this case.
Anyway I’d think twice before going
*going with these clowns.
$1.05 is not available anymore? It changes to $2.99 when I click the order link.
It’s not worth. Not even for this money. You will need to open too many tickets, you will be moved too often from node to node, etc, etc..
I cancelled both my HostFail vpses and I don’t miss them even a bit.
Well, as a feedback, I must say my experience with hostrail was VERY good. I got 3 USA VPSs and one in NL (Now Switz.).
They Dallas VPS’s were very good. Acceptable performance, nasty uptime and good support IMO. Until the issues in the last weeks. The containers were unusable, and I just moved my files to cancel with them.
Now I only have one container, the best performer. And still have the Switzerland instance (oh, and a Windows container too, but not much to say about it yet).
I hope the companyt will learn of their mistakes, because in my case was a good experience.
Yomero, no. With their limestone nodes was always some issues, terrible lag, etc, etc.. Most of us was moved atleast twice from node to node without some worth to be mentioned success. Their nodes are heavily oversold and more or less useless even as backup system as you can’t be sure what will happens next…
Would you to let me know what you’re using their .us vpses for (if anything at all)? Honestly? On what usage (apart from own their vps) base your experience?
The only thing which was they really into it was to sending out regular mails about their nodes failure, lags, etc.. I don’t know for you but I got such notifications from them on almost weekly basis. Part of it you can see here: http://twitter.com/#!/hostrail
I must agree with you Yomero, I have had a very good experience with HostRail since I’ve been with them starting in December. I currently have 3 US 2PU VPS’s, and one Switzerland XLarge VPS.
Regarding the issues people have been having on their Dallas nodes after the maintenance last week, I am yet to experience this. In fact, quite the opposite, the performance on my 3 US VPS’s have improved since the maintenance. (Mine are on Hipomenes, Mimas, and Pan)
While ticket response times haven’t been the greatest (up-to 24 hours), this past week they have improved greatly (within 2 hours max).
@Spirit: I currently use my Switzerland XLarge VPS for cPanel hosting, 2 of the 2PU VPS’s for DNS, and the other 2PU for an IRC daemon.
I can’t imagine to use this as IRC daemon as simple bouncher can’t stay connected to any mayor IRC network more than 5+ days (tested few months) but well… people have different needs. Good luck with your HostFail vps.
@Spirit.
Well, my first VPS with them was a 2PU (now cancelled). At the start some hiccups (november-december you know). After that, decent uptime and acceptable I/O. After that, I decided to move a forum and the blog in my nick to that server. Everything was fine.
The second instance (1PU) was used like a month to host some databases (like 1 million queries daily). After that, I moved the databases to the first vps (2PU).
Everything fine until 2 weeks ago and the surprising “maintenance”. My sites were almost unaccesible and then moved away.
My third instance.. is just idling n_n Maybe I will take the risk and move some databases in a week.
@Kuroi Hayate, are you HostFail reseller?
@Yomero, why would you do that and “take a risk”? You purchased plenty better LEB vpses if I remember well.
@Spirit: Yes, I am. And as for IRC, I have had no issues with it staying connected to the rest of the network for weeks at a time.
If that can be named “better”. I hadn’t moved to others because they have network problems, recent maintenance, or bad support, or are slow. I don’t want to put names but, you know what providers I have purchased and almost all have problems.
Currently my sites are with FanaticalVPS (very good, but is in Germany, so far from America…) and some others with 123Systems (little hiccups recently but is ok).
You all right, and I started to doubt all their stories. I don’t know exactly, but they may be doing this by meaning seeing how long it is taking and the start of issues itself (hey, we will do maintenance to all nodes in few hours from now, because we know our customers want it from deep inside!). And to let us leave for some reason.
I personally have credit under my account there but it is not much (maybe payment for 3 or 4 months to come), I will not lose time better let them take it :-) I remember loosing over $80 with TeamVPS PBUH.
My VPS is working but downtime is crazy, speed is shit as you all know, some posted screen shoot at their facebook page of CPU arriving over 220!!! Is always at a high peak in my node too.
I remove my site from there, if they are not really big liars and are going to continue the services, I might use it in future just and only for backup but nothing else.
They make me feel idiotic, for believing from first place there could be VPS with such disk space and such RAM and such Bandwidth with just fraction of costs of the cheapest budget VPS provider!
Looks that is what we should expect ;) Scam, or burglary, sooner or later.
HostFail, nice name, I’m going to register a domain with this word :D
Credit for this goes to another their ex customer and LEB regulars – to Joe Merit :-)
Taken by a squatter:
http://whois.domaintools.com/hostfail.com
I used to have 6 VPS with them, however due too many downtimes, I cannot risk loosing my clients and loosing income from my affiliate sites when they are down.
I currently retain 1 $1.05 VPS that I have paid a year in advance, but I don’t use it for any particular purpose anymore.
In my experience I always have a prompt response for any ticket during working hours. That’s fine with me.
What I can’t stand is when my clients call me and complained when they cannot access their websites. I don’t want to be blamed every time a downtime occurred especially when I cannot do anything to fix it. :(
There is still a coupon for 30% discount in their page.
It seems that with this latest round of “fixes” they’ve introduced some very restrictive CPU limits. Yesterday I rebuilt my box (which actually completed in a few minutes) and then built nginx from from source. The ‘make’ was so slow I had time to read every line of output :)
Check the runtime at bottom of http://74.63.241.70/status.html Any decent box can run that script in 1 second max. The Hostrail box takes 10-20 seconds.
Another thing is that outgoing bandwidth is very limited. Before I rebuilt I transferred a couple GBs of data off the box. Speed peaked at about 2 mbps (megabits/second).
So it’s too CPU-limited for anything dynamic (e.g. PHP) and it’s too bandwidth-limited to use as a backup box or fileserver. Which kind of limits the possible uses… :)
Took about a second for the status page to come up. Not doubting you, just as an FYI.
Oh and LET is down if LEA sees this. The 504 Gateway Time-out problem again.
Oops, says 9 secs in the footer. Just noticed that. Sorry.
That page is static, the script regenerates it every 5 min.
I realized that after seeing the 9 seconds in the footer. Sorry about that. Just wanted to report on what I saw. :)
All I can say WHAT A LUCKY MAN YOU ARE!?
Are you sure you are having allllll that amount of speedz empowered with a VPS???
Because, on their facebook one guy reported:
Current Amalthea server load 226.60, Screenshot- http://i.imgur.com/Bg2WS.jpg
Mine isn’t working at all, imagine how much the load is. Must be even HIGHER :D
One guy put the first seed of a datacenter in same name, as a facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/HostFAIL/109314372488200
* I expect them to intend at closing down soon, that is why they did all that suddenly :/ But hopefully I’m wrong.
At this moment it took 6 seconds n_n
Hostrail has never been horrifically bad for me. Used it for a secondary rsync box for months. Was fine up to the last week or so. I’ve since moved that service elsewhere with better uptime & transfer speed. If the Hostrail service doesn’t degenerate any further I might still keep it around for testing. After all, it’s $1.75 US or $1.67 Canadian (real money) per month :)
I just got a blazingly fast 6 sec rendering time!
Have a look at http://74.63.241.70/status.html now: Runtime: <1 sec.
This is after the kernel change that Hostrail implemented today. From their email, "The issue was basically with the Kernel version 028stab085.3PAE – we have now updated the majority of the Servers to 028stab085.5PAE and everything is returned back to normal."
My Hostrail went down today and didn't come back up. I didn't bother about it until a short while ago, then I logged into HyperVM and clicked "Reboot". It immediately came up and performance is excellent. Load and disk i/o are in the mud, it's snappy and fast at the commandline.
Oh ye of little faith :)
Yeah, I had munin monitoring a couple of website through their yearly 256MB plan and didn’t have any problem with it. It wasn’t until recently that things started going downhill, I am glad to see that Constantinos got it straightened out.
Yes Doug, that happens to me. I have filled a lot of tickets about that issue. Because I can’t always be available to reboot manually my server, and a little downtime may be a BIG downtime for this issue. Always happens the same =( ¬¬.
To be clear, I was praising Hostrail for fixing the performance issue. My HostRail VPS is now splendiferously fast :) The fact that it didn’t come up automatically is a separate & non-show-stopping issue (usually it always comes back after a node reboot).
So many people have crapped all over HostRail lately, I wanted to say something good. It’s more than “good”, I’m tickled pink :)
What is with this company. They should be sued.
have fun suing a foreign company over $1.
As I said expect intend at closing down soon, that is why they did ALL THAT suddenly :/ But hopefully I’m wrong. Yes we strongly want them to stay, but in such cases this doesn’t mean anything to them (from my experience with ex- deadpooled providers). Deadpoolic providers will just do it, no matter of anything from any sort.
Furthermore, on one of the funnier emails, from their emails before the purposed violent maintenance on all nodes, and for no reason, they denied to be intending to close down! It is being said “do not believe it until it is officially denied” :)
Add in lost revenue, pain and all those other good things an experienced US attorney can come up with.
Won;t probably get them but it’ll raise the amount.
I was hostrail customer until April when they were down for over 7 days solid. Yikes! I lost customers and business over that one. I cancelled my account asking for a refund for unused hosting time. 1 month later, I keep getting the “its under management review” line. Stay away from Hostrail. The site is slow, and the service is very poor.
I agree with UnHappyHostrail Customer. I ordered a server on May 27th. HostRail – Invoice #139668. I have yet to receive any kind of notification or information about my server and it has been SIX (6) DAYS. LOLZ. What’s going on? What kind of service is this? E-Mailed them 24 hours ago and I still have NO UPDATE on the situation LOLZ.
That is not their problem really, activation should be instant (same moment as happened to my order) if you have nothing wrong with your payment / info and was not detected as fraud or whatever , you would have instant activation.
Problem though is in some nodes that are overloaded, it’s performance. But you get what you pay for, and could be even better than what you pay for, it depends on which node you are. That is the REAL issue if they have one.
The server comes with a 512-1024 kb/s connection (sometimes less, see wget below). The internet connection I have at home is faster than that. Idk why anybody would waste their time with such a server!
Hostrail is starting to feel like W2. Damn, I seem to have bad luck in choosing VPS providers.
Support tickets used to be answered within a couple of hours but now it’s been one whole day and now response yet.
My VPS is online but I cannot ping it from the outside/internet nor ping non-hostrail addresses from it. I can login to it by using the host’s console access but no internet connection at all. However, I can access all machines in their internal network.
How can you claim it’s online then? :)
It seems they’ve had to raise prices by 60% across the board according to a pastebin floating around IRC.
Francisco
bwahaha…
I am Constantinos Coudounaris, Chief Executive Officer of HostRail. I have some unfortunate news to announce tonight.
—————————————
On Friday 24th June 2011 our Providers have informed us of a 60% upcoming price increase that is taking effect from the 28th June 2011, this was an extremely short notice for us and completely unexpected – as small of a short notice as it was we had to take action immediately in order to be able to continue providing service to our clients, i have had meetings with every single HostRail Staff Member as we needed to take a decision and we have taken our decision which is provided below.
Due to the current economic crisis that is affecting all companies in the planet we are unable to deal with this 60% price increase using our currently approved budget for 2011 and we are unable to approve a further budget for 2011 at the current stage, this means that we will be forced to pass on this 60% price increase to all clients as of tomorrow evening. Tomorrow evening we will be sending Invoices to every single customer with the 60% price increase, unfortunately this price increase will have to be paid by Tuesday morning so we can cover the 60% price increase our providers are asking.
We have tried all possible alternatives and solutions however the only solution is to pass this price increase in full to our customers, this is not something i want to do, this is not something i like to do, this is something that i have fought for 2 days now to try to avoid at all costs however its not on my hands anymore so i am unable to do something more.
—————————————
IMPORTANT NOTE
For the customers that will not be able to pay this 60% price increase i recommend that you proceed to the immediate cancellation of your services as we will be suspending all Services on Tuesday morning that have not paid this price increase. I should clear that this price increase willl be applied to all of our customers, even to customers that have ordered their service today.
—————————————
I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause however i am unable to do anything and the people that know me personally know that i have given a large battle to try to cover up this price increase myself but this was impossible.
Best Regards,
Constantinos Coudounaris
Chief Executive Officer
HostRail
I love how every email Constantinos sends mentions these big, elaborate meetings with “every single HostRail Staff Member”. It’s plain as day to anyone who has submitted a support ticket that his support staff are obviously just outsourced Indians. “Please check the same” and “do the needful” pretty much gives it away.
A 60% price increase would bring this from $1.05/month to $1.68/month. With 123systems offering similar plans in the same Limestone datacenter in Dallas for $10/year and $15/year, this deal really isn’t all that great anymore.
No one beats BuyVM for its price and availability.
@Francisco Diaz – Are you going to raise the price too? ;)
Another question to Francisco – are you going to add some more stock for us HostRail refugees?
Yep, we are waiting…
I’ve decided to raise prices by $0.00.
We’ll send you new invoices sometime this weekend… :P
We have a fairly large build out coming up that will bring a lot of $15/y VM’s online, you can read about it here http://www.lowendtalk.com/questions/11038/the-great-buyvm-build-out
Francisco
Geez Fran, I can’t afford your price increase. I guess I’ll take my business elsewhere.
Damn it all! How am I going to afford that with my 20 containers.
Move out?
I think that Constantinos Coudounaris lie again. Just like he lied about:
– imaginary competition which hammering his nodes for purpose (to justify bad performace of heavily oversold servers)
– 21 full time Support Engineers (even middle sized DC don’t have so many support engineers)
I mean… does anyone believe that any DC increase price for 60% just like that? 60%!!! Maybe some % but 60%? Yeah, right!
is there any other limestone DC customer which experienced 60% prices increase in those days?
As I said here: http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/hostrail-1-05-256mb-openvz-vps/#comment-36418
I mean of course not! It’s NOT the data center asking them for 60% increase as what they LIE! No, of course, just another trusted lie by Hostrail as always..
So How about this for a good chuckle: (I must also say, HORRIBLE Business practice and they obviously plan on going out of business soon).
To Paraphrase the following, the CEO has made a fuck-up in his budget calculations, so now the customers must PAY for his fuck-ups. All customers received the following e-mail in the past day. If the business owner thinks this is good business practice, he is SADLY mistaken. You can not fuck up your money and then fuck your customers by making them pay more for a service they already purchased at a set price.

Hostrail, you have not only lost me as a customer, but you are going to find out real quick that this is a FAILED business practice you are choosing to use and that you are going to lose any confidence you once had from your customers in your ability to run a business.
Constantinos Coudounaris, grow up and honor your promises you made to your customers, and if you can not do that, close down your business and save what face you have left.
Well, he is a CEO, right?
Isn’t what most CEO’s do? Fuck their customers, cash out and leave.
PS. Yeah this post is full of bitter sarcasm.
When the previous crisis happened I didn’t expect they will ever ever come again with this kidding once more.
Now I can tell what happened really and clearly, as I understood everything about those clowns:
1- In previous crisis they where out of money, that is why they insanely reduced the number of servers (which took them weeks of downtime for ALL clients, to finish it). And which also brought all of our VPS from acceptable performance to ultra-poor performance at an eye blink. They claimed increasing quality of service is behind this at the time!! Which of course was not, as quality went down to the floor, and eventually came to hardly-usable level, much lower than how it WAS before maintenance. Remember, this was done SUDDENLY, which is their business module, they wait for money from the sky until payment is very close, then they do the next insane “fix”.
2- They where out of money again in previous weeks, that they tried to stack tons more VPS into same nodes (which are suffering to death already), that is why emailed clients with another 65% promo code.
3- They failed to get enough clients to order new VPSes, or perhaps clients didn’t order any because of the current service level after the “maintenance” described in point 1.
4- They sent recently a new (spam!) email, announcing a sudden “contest”, for who can bring more customers? Humor about that was it is from 25-30 June only! And they emailed at 25 June if I’m correct! That shows clearly how random and idiotically they work / pay their bills. And how their business module is really.
5- They lie a lot and use it every where. Examples:
– Staff members.
– Meetings in the office.
– Adding 20 more new staff full time bla bla
– Hi, we will start maintenance for all nodes right now! (i. e. stack you all on less nodes as we are out of money, and you better forget about the CURRENT performance after we increase performance! We lie, dude)
– ANNOUNCEMENT: SOME BIG COMPANIES ARE ATTACKING ALL OF OUR NODES, YOU ARE STILL DOWN NOT BECAUSE OF OUR SUDDEN, CLAIMED, MAINTENANCE, IT’S COMPETITOR ATTACKING US RIGHT NOW. STAY TUNED FOR NEXT TWO OR THREE WEEKS!
I moved away some time ago. I think it was a good choice :)
Of course it was. Congratulations for your successful and in time escape..
You keep saying “They”, but I have a feeling it’s even worse than you think — that there’s just this one guy behind all this farce. :)
When did we reduce the amount of servers we had? If you can prove this feel free.
Only checking http://reports.panopta.com/hostrail would prove the amount of Servers we currently have.
I replaced my 8 with them with 8 $1.25/month VPSs from another provider just now.
I will only say four thing having read through some of the comments.
You’re all jumping to conclusions without knowing pretty much anything:
(1) In my email I said providers – plural
(2) We have other agreements with our providers (plural) – how do you think we can afford to offer our services at such low prices? – if we get a price increase it does mean all of the customers of those providers (plural) will get a price increase
(3) The other problem we had in April was explained in Detail – people reading our emails would know exactly what the issue was – for any additional details check into the OpenVZ Bug Tracking Systems or ask other companies who faced the exact same issue including many companies also at LowEndBox.
(4) Whoever thinks that I lie doesn’t know anything about me nor HostRail.
I’ll put my hand up as someone who thinks you’re a liar. There’s just no way all the datacentres you use put their prices up, at the same time, with 4 days’ notice, and all resulting in a 60% increase across the board. Feel free to prove me wrong. I’m confident you can’t.
Explain why your website is still showing the old prices, and allowing people to buy them.
Explain why discount codes still work.
Explain why yesterday you invited customers to join a competition involving referrals, knowing that prices would be rising.
It just doesn’t add up at all.
People have entered into a contract with you. You’ve agreed to provide them with services at a set price. You can’t just raise the prices or cancel the service halfway through.
Perhaps you need to raise prices for whatever reason. I don’t know or care. The way you’ve done this, or intend to do it, is just plain wrong. You’re not telling the whole truth, and the way you’re going about this will destroy your company.
Reasons for price increase:
1) Financial crisis in Greece (that’s where HostRails HQ is at)
2) Unsustainable 65% recurring discounts
3) Dwindling customer base (just read the reviews)
4) Pending collapse of the company (immediate 60% hike will unleash a torrent of refunds and cancellations).
I’m almost certain that Constantinos is just doing last minute cash grab before the company ultimately dissolves. He sees it, everyone else sees it too.
Pull your money out now. Get refunds while their Paypal account is still non-empty.
Good luck trying to get a refund. I was foolish enough to prepay for several months at a time because I was happy with the service. I canceled and asked for a refund 2 months ago after the extensive downtime to no avail…
I’m looking into legal action, but have not gotten a response yet from council. I am guessing with their TOS we are out of luck on refunds, and agree the company is likely short lived….
Hmm WHAT COUNCIL?! AND WHY I FELT YOU ARE CONSTANTINOS himself?
Who said we are located in Greece?
My mistake, I meant to say Cyprus. But the two are closely linked economically.
Splitting hairs here? But is it the only point you’ve attempted to refute?
Hmmmmm…
If you spent one minute to check our website you would have noticed that new orders were disabled from last night.
I’m not another fraudster who will run with your money and accept new orders after the email.
When i sent the email about the contest i had no idea of the final result and things were looking positive.
Oh your NOT a fraudster?
So you will agree to give full refunds to those who have paid less than 30 days ago as your have breached your own TOS?
I was able to go through the order process when I posted. Now you’ve marked everything as out of stock. Don’t take the piss, Constantinos.
I will only say four thing having read through some of the comments.
You’re all jumping to conclusions without knowing pretty much anything:

So hostrail really have 21 full time Support Engineers as you said in one of your spam mail letters?
Yes, would you like a screenshot from our WHMCS? or even copies of their ID Cards?
Yes.
@Mike: Ok i’ll be arranging this and sending this with my next email.
How about a photo of you all gathered in your office, holding hand-drawn signs with “Hello LEB!” and date.
Will we be able to grab refunds if we only renewed our vps yesterday? because I will not lose money because of this, so unless you refund us it’s going to be a lot of paypal disputes coming your way.
Constantinos,
Part of running a business is conserving enough money to support your business in situations such as an unexpected price increase. Just because you can not do your job correctly, DOES NOT give you a right to try and wage a tax on your customers. We agreed to a set price when we signed-up. Thats like going to a retail store and buying something on-sale then getting home and the re-tailer calling you at your home and telling you if you do not pay them 60% more for the item you are going to come repossess it. Also, what about your customers who have resold your service at a set price, such as web site hosting, e-mail hosting, etc? Are they to e-mail their customers and tell them, because some idiot who owns my service provider can not pay his bills, now I have to raise your prices? YA RIGHT! Cover your own ass you LIAR, do not make it your customers job to fix your poor money management skills!
Also, who care what other businesses have similar problems? Obviously those people who you refer to have made equally ignorant promises to their customers, and have also cheated their customers, including some who have taken customers money and ran.
Constantinos, I remember reading when I signed-up for my account you saying something about us “not having to worry about a situation like this because your company had the capital to support this venture” (not in those exact words, if I had more time I would search for it, I know its on this forum) which at this point is OBVIOUSLY a LIE. Any good business person with a 21 person staff would be FIRING staff to recover this loss before trying to tax their customers, but I am sure since thats a ridiculous amount of people to employ for a VPS business that that number is just as fake as your promise to not fall flat on your face because of poor business management.
GROW A PAIR! Step up and pay the bill, take the loss, and fix the way you run your business! Or, turn it all off and walk away, cause if you do not fail now with these business practices, it is only a matter of time till you crash and burn.
Also Constantinos, I just want you to know something else, when I signed-up for my offshore VPS, I did so cause you hosted with (WorldStream) kabelfoon.nl, which had premium tier-1 services. Then you downgraded and cheated us all by moving to your cheaper “Switzerland” data center to save a few $$ and I did not even complain or speak out about this. Now your saying that obviously you did not down grade us enough, and now because you can not again find a cheaper host we have to pay the cost difference in your bills. This is just a sad JOKE!
A quote for your to think about my friend:
There is a certain degree of satisfaction in having the courage to admit one’s errors. It not only clears up the air of guilt and defensiveness, but often helps solve the problem created by the error. – Dale Carnegie
I will not even comment about WorldStream as that is another thing that you don’t now anything and are jumping to conclusions.
Is HostRail completely shut donw now?
Yes.
https://freevps.us/img/images/screendud.png
I make that 8 things. :)
I understand the word plural so that must include Limestone too, afaik (could be wrong) hostrail uses Limestone Networks for allot of their servers so I have asked them to comment on this price increase that will likely loose hostrail allot of business.
If they are not one of the hosts increasing prices then why put all customers prices up… makes very little business sense.
especially with different pricing system. As example hostfail limestone vps users have different pricing system than “offshore switzerland” vps users. I also contacted both LSN representatives on WHT if they really suddenly increased prices for 60% without previous hostfail knowledge.
AND HOLD ON a second WHAT ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS IN THE SWEDISH DATACENTER? NO WAY DID BOTH PRICES GO UP.
Who said anything about Datacenters increasing their prices?
Ummm you did…
I quote: “On Friday 24th June 2011 our Providers have informed us of a 60% upcoming price increase…”
Are you playing a word-game? Providers/datacenters…
This is turning into a further and further PR nightmare for your company.
Probably it’s their excuse-provider that is raising prices….
So please explain where this sudden price increase is?
Would it be against LEB rules for me to post a ‘Customers of hostrail get 2 months free’ offer :p either way the amount of people that are going to be left looking for a new host is going to be great for business.
I say that with sympathy for current hostfail customers of cause but I don’t expect Hostrail to be anything more than a memory in a few months.
I know its never good when other hosts post on hosts threads basicaly attacking them but lets be open and honest here…. it is well deserved!
I think you just did! :)
I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with emailing LEA asking him to run the post. Perhaps he could do a round-up of all the providers who will inevitably be taking in Hostfail refugees. :)
Indeed Gary,
Perhaps I should have thought more before posting that.
A good neighbour/refugee program sounds like a good idea though.
Partial Quote from Limestone networks on WHT “it is standard for most of our servers to be advertised and sold with locked in pricing that will never increase.”
“We can’t confirm or deny account billing changes for any client. However, it is standard for most of our servers to be advertised and sold with locked in pricing that will never increase.” – Clint – Limestone
He can’t discuss clients matters because privacy but indirectly he give us answer we expected.
Actually he didn’t give you any answer as i never mentioned any names, providers is anyone who provides us with service and not only LimeStoneNetworks.
Oh common, Constantinos…
Any RESPECTABLE company does not do instant price hikes, let alone 60% hikes.
Even if there is a remote chance that one of your “providers” jacked prices, why the 60% increase in price across the board? Why not just increase prices for affected customers…
You done goofed. Big time.
My advice:
– stop the lies
– come out and admit that you screwed up
– most importantly, explain in detail the series of events that led to 60% hike in price
– explain how such situation will be avoided in the future
Having done the above, this is what a good CEO would do:
– Suck it up
– Only the new customers should be seeing increased prices.
– Keep up the remainder of contracts with clients who already paid up in full and wish to remain or offer full refund if they no longer wish to remain as clients.
– For clients with “recurring” discounts, offer to move them to a better plan for limited time (say a year) with mutual understanding that the prices will increase after that time.
– For reseller (these are the people who are doing bringing you customers), offer better rates/service for limited time so they too don’t look like douchebags to their clients in turn.
– Avoid any mass reocurring discounts until your company has enough revenue to weather any future “price hikes”.
Yeah it’s gonna be tough especially if your company has cash flow problems, but this is the only way to show your existing and future clients that your company plans to set things right.
Best of luck.
There goes another VPS provider…
http://img1.uploadscreenshot.com/images/orig/6/17617460732-orig.png
Hostrail TOS: “HostRail reserves the right to change the monthly payment amount and any other charges with a 30 day notification of such changes”
basically making this illegal….
That is true, looks like we have a case then :)
Oh… and probably also enabling customers to WIN on a paypal dispute for your last months payment which is usually rare with hosting.
too bad I payed with account credit for the past few months. (referral commission)
Especially for those you referred. Looks like people like you get some egg on their face too in this situation…
Ooooowww.
I like your desktop. What are you running, what mods/themes/etc?
What exactly is your problem here?
That would be you Sir.
You did not mention provider(s) by name because they would have made a fool of you even further by confirming your full of shit.
Limestone are one of the big ones, they have pretty much confirmed your prices have not gone up.
Saying we dont know what we are talking about and avoiding answering the hard questions it is not a defence that anyone is going to believe, you are incapable of telling the truth.
From LEA’s original post, “HostRail’s previous offer here is currently the most commented post. 570+ and counting. I guess this post might actually stop that one going up :)”
Sorry, I just find this extra funny now. I don’t think this is quite how HR was supposed to beat their old “most comments” record.
Oh great. Can’t even run a backup process to get my stuff off of there.
All I get is “backup_number_exceeded [1 greater than -] ”
I don’t know much about whats going on, but it seems like they’ve changed some backup settings to prevent user back-ups in anticipation for mass exodus.
If this is true… shame on you, Constantinos!
Do you mean HyperVM backup? There are easier ways to do backup. At least compress the www (or public_html) directory of your website, and transfer the compressed tar.gz file
Or do you use any control panel? Taking a backup of configuration and data is a very simple task if you do..
I ended up picking out the needed files from a hypervm backup (from hostrail) since hypervm could not restore it’s own backup (it was from a different vps under a different “reseller”).
Yeah I’m trying to use the HyperVM control panel to backup.
It worked a few times before i tried (a few months ago when I originally got the VPS).
After googling the error, it means that backup features were turned off. Coincidence? I think not. That’s pretty low even by HostRail standards!
How are they gonna explain this one? A rival company is DDOS-ing their backup capabilities…
maybe, because my backup is uploading to buyvm’s free (with a VPS) backup space right now.
In case anyone is interested you can backup each folder individually like so:
tar -czf /backup/etc.tar.gz /etc
tar -czf /backup/var.tar.gz /var
tar -czf /backup/home.tar.gz /home
tar -czf /backup/www.tar.gz /www
Then just grab the files from there.
Have they offered up any proof of the “rival company” doing these attacks? I know it;s been mentioned a bunch of times but I’ve never seen any real proof.
Seriously asking.
@NV: We didn’t change any backup settings, this was a known problem from January – it seems you didn’t follow our instructions to get this fixed – anyway open a ticket and we’ll fix it.
Really? News to me.
With 21 technicians at your disposal, why is this still affecting your customers? Can they/you not patch this automagically? Why do I have to open 17th ticket (yes, 17th just counted)?
PS. Just another reason I won’t be renewing my service…
One more comment for all of you to think about, when i said Providers (plural) – i did not mention any names so i am unsure why you are all talking about LimeStoneNetworks or any other Datacenter.
As i said you’re all jumping to conclusions without knowing pretty much anything.
Why don’t you lay it all out for us, your (ex)-paying customers, Constantinos.
That is coming at some stage – probably later on this evening or maybe tomorrow morning, once i have finished writing it i will be sending it and i’ll even post it here and anywhere else i can.
It’s too late for this. You already lost client’s trust.
LOL @ “maybe tomorrow”, you mean after you have disconnected everyone who would not cough up the extra 60%.
That said, I have not had an invoice for the 60% percent, but rest assured I will not be paying it should it arrive and I will be cancelling my service (or letting you take care of it for me).
We’re basing our responses on the limited information you’ve provided us. All you’ve given us thus far is a sob story via email that contained no explanation, and a bunch of “It’s not MY fault” and “you guys don’t know anything” responses to comments in this thread. Did you really expect for everyone here to twiddle their thumbs while we wait for a proper explanation… especially with the new invoices only a few days away?
The way you’re handling this will prove to be public relations suicide for HostRail.
That would be because we all know you use limestone as one of your providers, and you are being as clear as mud about the facts (Plural)
Its completely my fault, i’m trying to cover up some people it seems.
Anyway don’t ask me why but i decided to use my Personal Facebook Profile to add full information on what is happening with HostRail.
My Facebook Profile can be found at http://www.facebook.com/consc198
Feel free to send a friend request.
“Anyway don’t ask me why but i decided to use my Personal Facebook Profile to add full information on what is happening with HostRail”
I wont ask…. but I will suggest as people who do not know you are not able to see your wall or info you wrote it there to keep the amount of people reading it to a minimum?
I am not on facebook and am not going to sign up — hence I have no access to this information.
So his idea to keep this hush-hush is working pretty well.
Can someone make and upload screenshots of whatever gets posted there?
Facebook so far: http://i.imgur.com/Z3az0.jpg (not taken by me)
You’re publishing what’s going on with your company on a social network? How stupid and unprofessional is this? I want to see an announcement on your SITE or send an EMAIL.
Just when you think HR can’t become more of a farce, here we go…
And it is gone…. I am assuming, I can no longer connect to my box and I did not cancel, was just going to let it run until they cancelled it for me.
Mine is gone too. I thought the email said it will go Tuesday morning.
They’re getting shut down: http://reports.panopta.com/hostrail
We’re investigating.
inb4:
* DDoSed by competitors/in general
* Network outage
* anything involving competitors
Nice trick though. Tell people to have paid it by Tuesday, so they pay it on monday, then shut down the nodes on monday and scarper with the money… Still waiting on your big explanation, Constantinos.
http://www.quickmeme.com/meme/49xj/
Francisco
@Francisco don’t be such stupid. STOP advertising your company with that HORRIBLE way and making fun of other people.
No Birdian, piss off. Francisco has *not* spammed his company like many other pathetic people on LEB/LET.
Advertising what? We haven’t had inventory in months.
We don’t need to squat in other peoples threads like some other companies to get by, if you haven’t noticed we’ve won first place on LEB and are likely to make it still in the top 3 without any sort of inventory.
I don’t come to LEB & LET to promote our own company, I’m here to take part in the community. If you think we’re trying to compete with hostrail you’re a loon.
Francisco
Naah, Francisco ain’t need to squat to get customers.
Every time I got a notification of BuyVM re-stocking, the minute I clicked the order button they are all gone.
It’s similar to RamHost. One day late, all the goodies are gone.
They got called out by their provider:
http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1060255&page=9
Yes, Investigate how stupid you are and how you achieved to screw your company in one day.
Pretty nice, thumbs up!
You better have to cancel your servers and go away.
You’re going to make zero money with what you’re doing right now.
Oh wait, “we’re”?! Why do you think you’re many?
what’re you talking about?
did you get F on English?
One should *NEVER* have to apologize for their command of the English language.
no, i’ve got a degree, i’m pretty bored to think before type, and you’re probably a native speaker.
I’m sure his command of English is a fuck-ton better than John’s ability in whatever Birdian’s native language is.
I’m surprised too that he says we are, since he is “everyone” mentioned in tons of spam emails. The only exception was his Indian friend who helps in support together with Constantinos.
Other than that:
– Office
– Meetings
– CEO
– Bring that topic in our next meetings to ask my managers
– Managers
– Hi who doesn’t know me I’m lawer assigned by HostFail
– 21 full time technicians
– New patches of technicians (old number was not enough in my eyes) asssigned
– Add new technicians
– etc
Are all examples of lies..
“Hello to all HostRail Customers,
Due to my own personal reasons and how i currently feel i am unable to say a lot currently. I have had a discussion with LimeStoneNetworks. PrivateLayer does not want to co-operate with us apparently unlike LimeStoneNetworks.
As you have noticed all US Servers (except for one i believe) are Offline, NO DATA has been lost however, i want to be clear with this that NO DATA has been lost.
That is all i will say for now, i will try to post additional information tomorrow as early as possible.”
Sam/Constantinos (probably)
Don’t you realise that this is why people are reacting so badly?
Just be direct and deliver the facts, not what you feel you want to say, this situation has nothing to do with how HostRail feels.
I am confident in saying that if there was no so much intentional misdirection and half truths and if HR had just said 30 days go, “the business model failed, apologies to all customers we can only sustain you for 1 month, please take this as notice to move your services” everyone would have been more sympathetic.
No DATA has been lost but I doubt it will ever be found at the same time!
Ye notice the “”‘s, it’s from his page ;).
I would like to clarify that Hostrail is NOT a direct customer of Private Layer. So the information that “Private Layer does not want to cooperate” is not accurate information.
Hmmm,
Actually if we open our mind a little bit more and set aside the pain and suffering (not to mention the fear of loosing data should HostRail immediately decide to close down the VPS we are on),
I still can give Constantinos a 2 thumbs up for his diplomacy skill in turning bad things into good words which most people would believe. His wordings seems to be carefully chosen and make a good use of positive statements and avoid negative statements or by paraphrasing the negative words into a more comforting sentences especially in public exposure.
Should we pay attention to the way he responds to complains or disagreement, they seems to be carefully placed as if to allow his technicians to have more time to find a workaround while calming down the disgruntled customers. That is some skill that not everybody can master.
As an example, respond to a first ticket/complain reporting that one’s VPS is down, the respond would be “We’re investigating”. When the customer throw in a second ticket after another hours passed by, the respond would be “Our technicians is heading to the data center”. When the customer starts to grow horns on his/her head and throw the third ticket, if the problem is solved then he would happily inform the customer “Our technician has resolved the problem, sorry for the inconvenience” otherwise the responds would be “We suspect that there is a user that abuse the system causing node down”.
Aren’t those words comforting, promising, and effective?
Yest it is… for user who are new to shared web hosting and the world of dot com.
Unfortunately, he got the wrong audience. Most user who buy a VPS at least know how to use the terminal and do the “rm -rf /* kill em all” or at least they know that there are little hamsters that runs back and forth carrying data packet throughout the Internet. These audience cannot be calmed down with only words, these audience need facts or logical explanations.
Well, at least the wording and responds is better than, “This is an unmanaged service, we suggest you google around to find out why your server is down and to learn more about Linux or whatever distros you’re using”.
So, to sum it up, just like what my brothers from UK, the Bee Gees, used to say, “It’s only words, and words is all I have to take your heart away”
Constantinos’ mom? What are YOU doing here?
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/421604/
i know it is 2 dollars but when will i get the money back?
Indeed, I’ve talked to privatelayer: http://pastebin.com/dV7XFSsE
And at last we come to the real reason: “Hello,
Their servers are shut down because of the billing issues. They did
not pay their invoices.
Regards,
Hosthink Internet Services
“
so, best thing is to make a “issue” on the pay pal and they will be handling their account. right?
Intangible goods, PayPal claims will fail. :(
Good to see the truth’s finally out. Raising the prices 60% my hairy arse, Constantinos.
way to fuck up your business hostrail and there goes my 20 vps from you guys.
Try a paypal dispute, they might work. They did with companies like rackvm.
webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1060255&page=9
If the statement is true how Hostrail or Constantinos is terribly doing the business…
“Hello,
We are Hostrail’s, Switzerland dedicated servers provider. We are writing this post for clarify the situation.
We do not raise any price. Price are all the same as we started. Hostrail has always billing issues. SERVERS SHUT DOWN BECAUSE OF BILLING ISSUES.
There is no cooperation in this situation. They have overdue invoices. We gave them 10 days but they do not respond it. We saw them, they were login into clients area but they did not give any response.
When we shut down their servers, they blame us and they said they did not get any invoice, ticket or reminder mails. So we gave them the mail logs.
On Saturday they want 2 days for payments, they sign document about it and we power on their servers again. But they did not pay it again.
This is the real story about Hostrail and Switzerland. We have all documents about it.
SO, there is no negotiation about the prices and others. All of the situation is about their unprofessional behaviours, lack of dicipline and billing issues.
If there is any questions about it, please sent an email to hostrail@hosthink.net. Our staff members will try to help you ASAP.
Regards,
Seref Cankaya
CEO
Hosthink Internet Services”
Got an extra hour :)
Please note that on that page, the provider (or at least one of their providers) is denying any price increase.
I’m amazed that people are still using Hostrail. Personally, I reached the bullshit quota ages ago and cancelled.
After the price raise email came I moved as quick as I could. I had a feeling this would happen.
Statement From Private Layer INC regarding Hostrail:
We have just become aware of a personal post by Constantinos Coudounaris, of the company “Hostrail.” In the post the owner of this company states: “PrivateLayer does not want to co-operate with us apparently unlike LimeStoneNetworks.
This statement is false and without merit.
Neither Constantinos Coudounaris nor Hostrail are a direct customer of Private Layer. We have not been in contact with Constantinos Coudounaris nor Hostrail throughout this entire situation, nor does any direct billing relationship exist between Private Layer and Hostrail.
These servers are rented to Hostrail through a 3rd Party reseller. The reseller has authorized us to release the following email to talk to them directly about the situation:
hostrail@hosthink.net
Our privacy policy does not allow for us to disclose any further information about the situation. Please contact the above email address for further information about this situation.
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1060255&page=9
Oh, I wish I had the time to read all that. :)
Finally the truth comes out.
So it was a pack of lies ALL of it.
I would have had sympathy for the guy, he tried a brave strategy of wholesale VPS servers but the constant lies and blame have removed any hope of any sympathy.
Moral of the story ‘Quality over quantity’
Perhaps some of the customers should pool a few $ each and ask Host Think to take over the management of their servers they only charge $35 for full management :) Hostrail have already signed over the servers to them anyway!
Heh heh heh….
He’s not lying, he’s just not telling the truth
So, it is a virtual company, with virtual technicians, virtual customer service, suffered from virtual attack, run by a single (virtual) person with extraordinary
diplomacylying skill.Ironically, he wrote a book about mathematics but seems that things doesn’t add up.
Awesome….
or did he :)
It’s a virtual book.
@vedran
You are right! I have it in my Kindle n_n
lol
I wonder from where he was going to pay $300!!
That is a part of his email:
lol! Obviously he treated clients as just kids! And still believed in his previous fancy announcements!
MORE AND MORE OF REDUCING NODES AND STACKING MORE VPSes INTO SAME NODES
MORE AND MORE OF REDUCING NODES AND STACKING MORE VPSes INTO SAME NODES
Last one just for lolz :P
That one was always my favorite. Constantinos always talked about these big meetings with his huge team in their offices along with lawyers and competitors and other stuff you hear from Fortune 500 companies, not fly-by-night hosting firms run by a Greek and his “team” of bottom dollar outsourced Indians. Do you guys think that Constantinos blew all his funds on lawyers and fancy office chairs instead of paying the server bills? If you ask me, I think it was all a bunch of BS in the first place — smoke and mirrors to cover an unsustainable business model.
http://www.ip2location.com/demo.aspx?ip=117.240.239.225
That IP was seen in a screenshot he posted on facebook.
He posted a screenshot of one of the nodes on his facebook and the ‘last login’ IP is from India so he was likely using an outsource company for some of it.
Francisco
…and his “team” of bottom dollar outsourced Indians…
Sounds an insensitive racist comment to me!
What is the relevance of this point to the overall situation?
It’s neither racist nor insensitive — it’s just the truth. Constantinos hired a crappy outsourced support service and gave them western names like “Robinson Howards” the “Abuse Department Manager”. I guess this goes along with HostRail’s entire operation of serving crap and calling it gold. I don’t mind the Indian support as much if providers were just honest about it. I have much more respect for a company when I know I’m dealing with Rajesh Venkatesan and not “Robinson Howards” who is just Rajesh in disguise.
Is it indian or injun ;)
Back in Nevada some people know me as “Cloud Hosting the Sitting FatBoy” :), although in Bombay (Mumbay) some people know me as Sanghita Gunadharma :)
I do have to point out that there are decent outsourcing companies based in India. We use one for our server monitoring and first and second level tech support. :)
The fiasco is nothing to do with his being Greek or Cypriot or the nationality of his staff or how much they got paid per hour. It is just bad maths in adding up the future monthly bills from a guy who authored a math book. That is all.
Good and bad support exist everywhere and attributing qualities to nationalities is not appropriate IMHO.
This is a Cyprus based company. It has nothing to do with Greeks or Greece in any way.
Since when Cyprus has nothing to do with Greeks or Greece in any way?
No, he’s closing the company.
Constantinos Coudounaris – We’re closing down as there is no other solution as it seems, there has been a unconfirmed offer for someone to buy HostRail. At this stage i am accepting serious offers to buy out HostRail. The situation is currently a mess with thousands of people offline, i am really going to take the quickest solution that is available to me.
I’m really trying me best, the situation is extremely bad currently.
Don’t look at me. I didn’t make an offer.
Doc, are you sure? We can’t imagine that your multi-corporation wouldn’t try to buy also HostFail! :P
Not sure what “multi-corporation” you’re looking at….
You never told us more.. so I can’t comment that!
Constantinos Coudounaris
“OMG WHY THEY SHUT ME DOWN, I ONLY OWE $1,000. THEY BAD BUSINESS”
LOL
NO WAY
MY SIDES ARE SPLITTING… HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
If you owed them $1.05 for 8 days, I’m pretty sure they’d shut you down as well.
Out of all the comments in this thread that made me laugh most
I owe them nothing. I laugh at him bitching at another company because he owes them $1,000. Try again.
(btw, quote was from te “CEO”)
Let me rephrase that:
If you (not you personally) owed them (Hostrail) $1.05 for 8 days, they would most certainly shut you down.
And here are they blaming Hosthink for shutting them down for owing $1,000 (and $17k to LimeStoneNetworks). Hypocrites. I shouldn’t probably use plural here.
I think serious issues started at around 17th of March, when they sent an email claiming all US (Limestone) servers are down, and DC doesn’t answer even phone, that was probably one of the warnings by LimeStoneNetworks. They obviously turned off all HostFail servers at that time.
And again, Constantinos gave them the best bullshit you would ever see, that they operated his servers until this day.
In less than a MONTH (again, less than 1 month) later, the sudden US servers disaster took place, which obviously was a step by HostFail to stack VPSes into less nodes, as performance clearly dropped into a fraction of what it was before “Constantinos performance increase decision”, when that maintenance and downtime finally ended weeks later.
Interesting that they still have 762 followers. I wonder if they’re old accounts or spammers or folks hoping that they’ll come back.
Their main site is offline. So could it mean that the “HostRail Train” has been De-Railed and crashed?
I really feel sad about the whole incident coz even if there had been lots of downtimes, I loved this $1 VPS of mine more than any of my other boxes. Was a pretty “cute” test box.
OMG HR >_<
They got called out about the “server price increase” yet again:

Farewell letter as posted on WHT:
https://freevps.us/img/images/screendud.png
No backups, no nothing.
No backups, no nothing? No sympathy.
People should’ve had their own backups.
If you’re running anything important, you should have a backup plan in place. If you’re using absolute bargain basement servers like Hostrail’s, especially so.
Not having regular up to date backups made is negligent, no matter what.
If you had something important, it shouldn’t have been on a buck a month VPS.
Agreed. I’m glad that nothing of value was lost.. my only modifications to the system was my .bashrc file. Boo hoo hoo. :)
I reckon most were using it for proxies etc, so it’ll be a 2 minute job to reinstall it and config it on their new VPS. The drive performance on mine was so bad that only something like a proxy that never actually touched the hard drive.
Some were using it as a backups destination. I just hope it wasn’t their only backup destination, and it wasn’t the backup for other sites of theirs on hostrail services…
well that is a shame…
how about money?
I already dispute the payment through paypal.
Latest Updates are being made available at http://www.facebook.com/hostrail
Lent money from the Greek treasury?
@Constantinos: First you ‘force’ us to become friends with you (personally) on Fb in order to get info and to get the real story and proof of the providers that increased their prices. Which you didn’t do at all. Then you remove us as friend from FB, and now we have to look at the generic Hostrail page on FB in order to get info. Do you realy think that’s the way to “work” with your (ex)customers? I guess we’ll get yet another story without any proof and without any info on what realy is the reason of your collapse….
All their servers are shut down. They can’t send the emails, the can’t make an announcement on their website, god knows where their client details are now.
Facebook (or Twitter) looks like the best solution right now.
Of course, I’m talking about using Facebook for their announcements. Not the way they’re doing it.
“Keep refreshing this FB page and you might find out something” is not a way to go.
Actually the hostrail account is open. His personal one requires a friendship request.
it was good while it worked, and pretty cheap.
i dont know about the provider story etc, i dont care, setuplink for example and availablevps did not even bother to tell me they are going down, down, down. i had 3 vps’es there and they are all down, at least this guy is proving some info on how he is going to handle the situation.
nordicvps for example, i had to wait 2 months almost but i got my vps back as promised.
Well, that was an interesting 15 bucks I spent. I guess it’s gone now. Anyone else got a cheap VPS IN STOCK?
Can anyone give me an introduction of Jamie Dimon?
When I originally left a comment I appear to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and
now each time a comment is added I receive four emails with the
same comment. There has to be an easy method you are able to remove me from that
service? Thanks!
