For those who prefer Xen over OpenVZ, it is again available at CityNet Host. Mohamed has emailed me this ordering link, which gets you the following VPS for $6.50/month:
- 512MB memory
- 25GB storage
- 1000GB/month data transfer
- Xen/SolusVM
I guess by now everyone would know that CityNet Host have their servers in Egypt, backed by a telecom there. I still do not have personal dealing with them (latency is way too high from where I am), but from previous posts the performance seems to be okay, the network connectivity can be mediocre (or great) depending on where you connect from, but the support is generally pretty good. They also have claim to have 30 days money back but might need to check on the terms & conditions on that.

I signed up for one of there hyper v vps on 31/12 am still waiting for it!!!
Hype V? I guess with Windows-based VPS it’s not automated and would need to be setup manually.
Dear Admin,
We are trying to send emails to you to post our March promotion, but you did not response.
Please advice
CityNet Host
Exactly the same deal as this one here?
@ Daniel,
Kindly contact our billing via live chat or open a support ticket, there are an issue with this order.
You are an old customers Daniel, you can talk with us any time.
Its setup and online now. Cheers guys :)
Yeh but it does not take that long i was told by one of there sales reps it would be setup today (few days ago) but it wasnt.
@ Daniel,
Kindly contact our billing via live chat or open a support ticket.
Latency was generally OK but the last 2-3 days it increased by like 2x, with some packet loss too, like the network is overloaded or DDOSed.
Besides above
I think it would be fair to say i have been happy with the network and support. (With my current Linux VPS from them) overall i would recommend them.
Is windows supported?
Windows VPS Available, see our Hyper-V Packages http://citynethost.com/vps-hyperv.asp
don´t waste your money, network is very slow…..
If I don’t want to attach my domain or buy a domain, and I only wanted the VPS, how can I do that? Do I select I will update the name servers?
No you don’t need a domain. Enter some word or.. whatever.
I’m a customer of CityNet and I’m happy to inform all of trolls over here, like anna letgueva that from Bulgaria/Europe the speed is more than great for the money.
PING steliyan.com (41.223.53.126) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from host-41.223.53.126.citynet.com.eg (41.223.53.126): icmp_req=1 ttl=47 time=197 ms
And Life is good, too:
top – 11:10:30 up 22 days, 20:22
Uptime is good but there is something to say about the network performance, during a peak hours I got max 20 kB/sec to Belgium. While off-peak times I’m able to get 800 kB/sec.
what about
http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
???
2011-01-09 21:53:52 (36.7 KB/s) – `/dev/null’ saved [104857600/104857600]
It was better (e.g. in december), but recently went really bad, so I can no longer recommend them to anyone.
My ticket about network speed is ignored for several days.
2011-01-09 21:53:52 (36.7 KB/s) – `/dev/null’ saved [104857600/104857600]
lol!
I have received a reply and an apology, they say the issue is being handled, and indeed the network latency seems to be improving.
nice, waiting the improving
CityNet today:
2011-01-10 12:18:02 (874 KB/s) – `100mb.test’ saved [104857600/104857600]
It’s not good like Club UpTime:
2011-01-10 11:11:10 (63.1 MB/s) – `100mb.test’ saved [104857600/104857600]
But for $1.99/month in previous promo it’s OK. :)
And from my local ISP:
2011-01-10 11:17:38 (6.40 MB/s) – `100mb.test’ saved [104857600/104857600]
Yeah I never got much more than 1 MB/sec even in the ‘good’ times. The only use I would imagine for a VPS with such network speed is an IRC client/bouncer, but they do not allow IRC so it is not an option.
@citynethost.com – can you please reconsider your TOS to allow personal IRC clients, bots(non spamming) and bouncers (I don’t ask to allow servers).
poor poor speeds… VPS Toy
Network speed depends on your location, any way we are managing to peer with other service providers to increase our network performance.
I’m a fan so far. My VPS has been up for 45 days without a problem. Cachefly download was 70kbs/sec, but that’s to be expected considering the location. Mine is a backup server, so I more or less set it up and forgot about it. I only log into it if I’m bored and want to play with something.
more speed for USA please
vps since 8 in the morning down.
no reaction, no mail, no info.
support is daed ?

Currently waiting since 14 hours for fix of the clock which differs by 8 hours. (#280012)
No responce up to now. Another one not worth recommending.
Hello,
You are using our VPS for 4 Months paying $2.50 monthly, you do not recommend us because your ticket takes 14 hours!!.
Your Ticket answered and Node time fixed.
Not supporting any sides here but does it realy matter how much the client pays. EVERY CLIENT IS IMPORTANT.
Of course our customer come first, but we are dealing with hundreds of tickets daily trying to make our service at a reasonable prices with good quality. It is not fair to write such comment on a public blog, you can simply talk with us.
I’ve opened the ticket, waited few hours, you didn’t fixed it in this time.
This 1 point. The other is, that is not so difficult to sync time on the node.
You could set it up once, and wouldn’t have problems like this.
The clock was differing by 8 hours.
Apparently there is very little Internet left in Egypt. I wonder how is everyone with CityNet Host VPS surviving?
WOW! Wonder when it will be back on. i think i might try and claim SLA haha
My guess? The server should still be running, but Internet connection is definitely broken – ping shows 100% packet loss.
the link doesnt seem to work anymore. same for my vps, bought just yesterday :(
Dude can you not read. Egypt Internet is offline :(
I think he meant the link LEA posted. But well, there’s something call google. :)
It’s not just you! http://www.arabist.net looks down from here.
-Source: My computer and http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/www.arabist.net
Mine’s also dead.
Review of service so far: 2½/5
300KB/s down,
several unwanted reboots,
control panel OS switching doesn’t work
Maybe that’s why we don’t have to buy VPS’s in the third world. It’s a shame that a government can shout down the whole internet access in a country.
Is there something wrong with the VPS? Seems like the website + all VPS have been down for several hours by now…
EGYPT is no longer connected to the internet!
DERP
The thread is full of reports of what is happening, links to news articles, BGP copy/pastes.
Yet someone comes around NOT reading anything of the above, just “uh is there something with my VPS…”
Name
CITYNET
NOT Announced
This AS is not currently used to announce prefixes in the global routing table, nor is it used as a visible transit AS.
Prefixes added and withdrawn by this origin AS in the past 7 days.
- 41.215.240.0/22 Withdrawn
- 41.223.52.0/22 Withdrawn
- 196.46.188.0/22 Withdrawn
At 22:34 UTC (00:34am local time), Renesys observed the virtually simultaneous withdrawal of all routes to Egyptian networks in the Internet’s global routing table. Approximately 3,500 individual BGP routes were withdrawn, leaving no valid paths by which the rest of the world could continue to exchange Internet traffic with Egypt’s service providers. Virtually all of Egypt’s Internet addresses are now unreachable, worldwide.
It was their great plan from the start, to collect money up-front for the VPSes, then simply disconnect their country from the Internet. :)
lol, yeah! :)
citynethost have a bussines parter in UK,
so, read this and refound all your clients now!
Why should they refund? Its not there fault and not there network where the problem lies.
How should they read this, if they haven’t got any internet connenctions?
Even I have government intervention is my ToS. This isn’t refundable.
Feel free to sue the Egyptian government though.
because your service will not work anymore
refound refound refound
crazy boy :)
this is horrible.. but hey, thanks GOD i already move all my website project from citynethost 2 days a go.. (GREAT anticipation)
and the money paid?
WHAT?? this is only US$24/year and how come they refund your money if they’re isn’t exist anymore? btw i love they new webpage templates.. sadly only a few day i saw that..
how? dispute with PayPal
let say if we 100 people disputing citynethost (Mr. Mohamed) i use they previous offer openvz 512 $2.5 / annualy $24.. it’s around $2400.. now.. everyone keep talking about the internet/server/etc don’t you even think about Mr. Mohamed himself? i hope he’s still alive and have a little money to buy some food or drink.. just go on disputing him with paypal, i prefer to choose giving him $24 to buying some food/drink.
Doesn’t make any sense to me to dispute them, their country s internet is disconnected, what can they do? nothing, just wait and see…
:)
It would be unfair to reclaim your money back from citynethost. That’s not their fault.
i have pay 4 years,
refounds please!
At least spell “refund” properly, you f***tard.
Well, that nick is a kind of joke in spanish, like saying “the big dick guy”… Doesn’t look serious.
and btw, paying 4 years in advance? pfff
> paying 4 years in advance? pfff
I believe what he has is 4*VPS, 1 year in advance each, which at least doesn’t sound as crazy :)
Maybe wait a few days see if their revolution end.
Solely disconnection from internet by government should be a reason for new revolution! :-)
Heck yea! Government turns off my internet and I’ma get my gun!
Rofl, well I doubt this should last for long, but anyways can’t blame there telekom if they got there peering disconnected.
Madness…
http://check-host.net/check-dns?host=citynethost.com – not found. ;(
Their nameservers are both in Egypt…
I think that it’s not a case for refunds. It’s not their fault.
In my country Politicians do more stupid stuff than this, but banning the Internet/Media, its insane. Well i do hope that the Citynet host administration is well and alive, and soon they will be online again.
I’m with cps, I just hope the dude’s still alive. Besides, it’s not even their fault. If the building is still their after the revolution, maybe we’ll even get our data back.
Don’t you think that you overreacting a bit? :) It’s most likely just matter of time…
btw. a bit ago vanished also last of Egypt’s main Internet service providers, the Noor Group.
Maybe that’s why we don’t have to buy VPS’s in the third world. It’s a shame that a government can shout down the whole internet access in a country.

Actually, that is in itself the reason for revolution, revolutions there doesn’t happen every day like some thought (particularly one who is making fun of revolutions). The reason for revolution is that Egypt has the essentials to be a Great place as it has always been, thus someone with the MINIMUM correct management qualifications, would EASILY put it in a correct place and not more than it. Like GERMANY for instance, the great country of Germany, PEOPLE of it WILL have the place GERMANY deserve, and should always have because of having democracy and the best qualified people leading therefore leads them where GERMANY shall and must be. While in a case like Egypt the current president has been in his chair for 30 years, and the worst part is, that in recent years he was doing EVERYTHING possible to let his SON to come after him! His party even went with silly rigging in last election there! VERY SILLY one, to make sure almost 100% of chairs goes to his party that has been in power for MANY decades, and so he can easily put his son AFTER this 30 years ends! So, the issue went down to become a single FAMILY issue even!!!! Not to mention the TOTAL FAIL during those 30 years, in managing EGYPT correctly. So, this ‘revolution’ doesn’t happen every day, or every decade even. But the reason for it is somewhat related to what you are suffering, which is a precedent in Internet history as I learned. While without they doing this, you know what, SON was going to come and for another 50 years of fail management, and of very similar method as father, going EXACTLY in opposite direction of everyone wish! Hope this summary cleared the confusions for some of you, pray for those people! ****sorry for fail English!
I do understand what you’re saying and I had knew almost everything what you have said. And I do support the Egypt revulotion and the fight for democracy. But I will not do any more business in this region, first Tunesia fell, than Egypt who is coming next?
For those who stated “don’t have to buy VPS’s in the third world”, (1) I don’t think Egypt can be categorized as “third world” (2) it can also happen in some first world countries as well.
If Obama’s Internet kill switch gets approved and implemented, we’ll be in a much bigger !@#$% if it is executed.
+ ACTA going on.. we are in deep !@#$% as you say…
I wonder what will follow though.. Internet becoming a new TV with a bigger remote, or some kind of darknet resistance…
Egypt’s a third world country if you define it as being not part of NATO and the Soviet Union:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_World
I wouldn’t call it a Third World developing country….
What turned me off is how folks mentioned that Egypt had limited uplinks to outside the country. i think what we’re seeing here is proof of that.
As to being alive and dead, There’s at least one Google manager missing currently and hasn;t been heard from in some time:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/02/01/ap/tech/main7307254.shtml
@drmike
The Soviet Union do not exist anymore.
@LEA
Egypt is a third world country.
Is there democracy? No, they have a dictatoric system.
Are they a member of NATO? No, they aren’t.
So why are they one of the best developing countries in Africa? Because Mubarak always supported the EU/US in conflicts and wars with Africa.
Egypt is now back online! :)
Yep and clearly it was “just” the lines tht were down….my VPS has an uptime of (just) 18 days….which is clearly more then the time the lines to Egypt were down
Same with me, my vps uptime is 18 days too
Yep, and servers haven’t even be stopped :)
Their website and vps are accessible, but I can not make any payment to my due invoice using Paypal.
While I don’t have account at Alertpay or Moneybookers.
I hope there is some solution on it :)
I assume that Citynet will read this so “Welcome Back Guys”, I hope that you and yours are all safe & sound.
Cairo is on-line!
Welcome aboard.. uptime 8 days since my last reboot.. wow.. even when they government shutting down the internet they still keep the server up..
Sorry for the interruption of service due to political events in Egypt – the service is fully operational now.
Our revolution still in progress.
I wish the best for the future of your country and pray for the success of your revolution.
We’re back don’t have that much to say right now but it was all out of our hands no internet in Egypt what so ever since thursday…and about paypal payments we’re currently working on that due to the amount of disputes/refund claims on it it’s temporarily paused thanks for people who supported waited for us we always promise the best we can do to all of our customers
Khalid
CityNet Host
I fully support you Khalid, those who made Paypal disputes are stupid for not looking at the news, it was out of your hands and at government level. You should win all of them Paypal disputes.
Well Khalid welcome, back – i am still getting lots of packet loss though and I do hope that “Housni Mubarak” is packing his bags for his flight to USA :P
No problem Khalid, welcome back in the cyberspace!
Good luck with paypal though!
Just curious how can you get around to the internet ;)
Welcome Back dear. We are so happy you back again. We pray for you and your company.
Good luck, hope the trouble passes for you all, welcome back online.
Are they accepting order now?
Yes, we are accepting orders
Now I can’t pay for my vps. They not accept paypay now.
I’s not good for me.
We accept PayPal via 2Checkout
I choose to stay with my Egypt VPS. I’m satisfied with the service and waiting was not so much :)
Thumbs UP for Egypt’s people!
Yes, me too.
Hello all, this citynethost.com is very bad. Placed a new order a day or so ago and im still waiting for my VPS. This is a very bad company they dont awnser emails and they dont sign customers up very quickly. I would stay away dont let the prices of these servers drag you in avoid like the plage
Your server delivered, sometimes run out of free nodes but usually new orders delivered within 2 hours.
@citynethost.com
You are an Egypt VPS provider, does you VPS in Egypt or where?
And what about the swap? Your Xen plans just say about the memory, don’t say sbout swap, does the swap controled us or what?
Thanks.
They run from a datacentre in Egypt, once they actually got my VPS up the speeds and reliability are not too bad actually.
Bottom of this page mentions the datacenter and provides an IP address to test:
http://www.citynethost.com/peering.asp
Well it very much depends on what VPS you order, depending on what package you choose to purchase depends on how many IP’s are assigned to your server.
VPS down and website down? Firefox can’t find the server at http://www.citynethost.com.
Seems like it :-(
My VPS is down too
hmm, atm nothing working there!
http://sitechecker.eu/?http://www.citynethost.com/
It’s back up.
Dead again?
Offline again, almost certainly due to the anti-government protests in Cairo today. Presumably the whole country is unreachable…
It’s the price you pay for hosting in an unstable third-world country, alas. (Speaking here as someone with a VPS with CityNet, BTW.)
Downtime due to a power failure at our data center not due to the anti-government protests in Cairo today.
We apologize for the down time, service restored and online now.
Does your data center have UPS+generators?
Yes, our DATA CENTER like any have UPS/Gen
failure occured at Power Panel feeding part of our data center.
Have any steps been put in place to try and prevent this from happening again?
Sure, Power Panel replaced. it rarely happen.
Not available again: http://check-host.net/check-report/5c647
Nor site, nor VPSes. :(
complete network down? the same… every month!
yep seems down again? wonder what is going on
It’s common. You’ll eventually get used to it. :)
Helpful information thanks for sharing.
