Nixcom - $49.99/Year 512MB OpenVZ VPS in Kansas City

Updated October 2011: Martin from Nixcom has decided to terminate the service. See this comment and replied comments for discussions.

Nixcom Via this WHT offer. Martin has also written me an email to remind me about it :) Nix Communications in Canada is restocking their servers and offering the $49.99/year package again (~$4.17/month). Similar to last time, but in Kansas City MO, rather than in Montreal Canada. Here is the link to order.

  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers with Joe’s Data Center in Kansas City MO (test IP: 204.27.58.122). Those are Sandy Bridge i7 boxes with RAID1 of SATA drives and 100Mbps port. Nix Communications have been around since 2008, been featured here since mid-2010, and Martin has been pretty quick in support from what I can see. Two issues were raised before — non-redundant NS and lack of SSL on web interface. I saw that Martin has managed to fix both — at least access to WHMCS is now protected (not too sure about SolusVM).

  1. Highly recommend them, I have one of their Montreal servers and it works great in Canada, also the cheapest one I can find in Canada with similar specs. 2 months and yet to see any unexpected downtime. Only complains is sometimes their support email reply will go to my GMail spam box, but then I do not think it is their fault. Also they are using SolusVM on an alternative port (http://web.nixcom.ca:5353/), not the standard port 80. I am not sure if they have added SSL or not.

Also agree, have only had minor problems which were solved in a professional and nice manner :-)

      Extremely stable now as well.

    • I actually checked this just now for my VPS:

      uptime
       22:16:09 up 49 days, 22:37, 1 user, load average: 0.06, 0.02, 0.00

  2. SSL is not ready on our SolusVM nodes. Still working on different major things to get our customers the best quality for the price they pay :)

@GeekInFinance thank you for the great comment! I appreciate it.

    I have one in Chicago.

It was off to a really rocky start. I didn’t receive a welcome email (checked the spam). I searched online for the SolusVM url which was xeon.nixcom.ca:5353 and logged in with the user/pass from WHM. Then a few days after, the node went down.

But everything is smooth now. 11:37:34 up 39 days
Only problem now is that I couldn’t make a subscription because the paypal account wasn’t business class or something.

    • I was going to suggest that you contact them directly and provide a link to their presales information but when I click on their Contact link, it goes straight into their Client Area.

      Which requires a login.

Not that great of a setup, Martin.

Well I was very attempted to go with these people and I am still tempted, how ever I have a few issues with there aup located at
    http://nixcom.ca/aup.html

The two main issues I have a proble with are:

1.14. Nix Communications subscribers will be held responsible and accountable for any activity by third parties, using their account that violates guidelines created within the Acceptable Use Policy.

Do you really believe that any subscribers is going to agree to be responsible for thousands of people that may be coming to there site? Sorry but your trying to put your responsibility off on other people and that is not how it works!

My second issue is just what gives you people the right to tell people what they may and may not do through there own email I can see to a point if it is using your email servers but what information I want to share using my own email account with other people is strictly my business
not yours, Next you will be telling people what they can and can not talk about on in there own homes on there own phone!

Yes, I opened a ticket, twice. You responded that my server was scanning voip something or others. I replied that we don’t and my server should be secure as it only runs zencart and wordpress. No response from you on that or the new ticket for a day.

        an come on:
“Tried to login to the billing system to check all tickets waiting, but nothing seems to work. ”
that’s 100% bullshit, why didn’t you change the password via mysql?

it’s kids like you who makes webhosting bad name. personally I hope people will either sue you or at least get chargeback.

        • Every refund demand will be processed. We had backups, everything was deleted! It seems to be a personal attack against me. We made our biggest investments this year and you think I’m just trying to fool everyone?! Yeah right. Like I said, I always been honest with everyone and I’ll continue.

If I look into a lot of dead pool in here, there is a lot a people that have closed without any notice. My notice is done on WHT and on my website. I got nothing to hide.

I don’t care waht your explanations are. I don’t care about your losses. I don’t care whether you are trying to fool anyone. I am just saying you’re a kid that shouldn’t be running a business if you don’t know a squat about it. Personal attack? Not at all, I’m not attacking you, just the way you perform at your soon-to-be in deadpool excuse of a company.

        • Can you stop your rage dpflap? “Personal attack” isn’t about you, he is talking about what happenned to their servers and so ¬¬ And yes, he will be in the deadpool, obviously, then you don’t need to emphasize again.
Finally, if you were a customer, and if he is a kid, why you trusted in his company?

How stupid you have to be not fill a simple email address and receive your whmcs backups by email every day?

Defaul whmcs function, no fucking knowledge needed!!! http://screensnapr.com/v/HmzvPY.png

Ow God, so you backup’ed to the same node that was hosting WHMCS and you call this a “backup solution”?

        September 12, 2011 @ 11:03 am | Reply
        • Yeah right! lol Are you kidding me?! The daily backup was made on an offsite server. I decided to backup like this instead of keeping all customer data on a gmail account…

        • Antony:

Then how come did your backups disappear too?

Some friend / associate had all the logins / passwords to all these servers & decided to pressure you?

There was no way to get into the panel with SSL if I remember well, and it sounded like it was too complicated to set that up so well…

So well, if even his admin interfaces were available in plain text only, and his backup server too… That might be an answer for “how did that happen”…

Martin, how come can you be sure that no customer data have been compromised?

“instead of keeping all customer data on a gmail account…” Ahahahaha, it’s not me who lost all his clients data and ruined his business? Get ready for chargebacks ;)

        • As noted by Martin, just send him an email with your transaction IDs and let him take care of the refund for now. Doing a charge back would be like pouring salt on an open wound — which in this case is the collapsing of Nixcom.

  21. Bob:

    That’s strange…

How can data dissapear like that?

It means that either servers are totally unsecure / outdated software etc, or too many people know the (too easy to guess?) login & pass…

    Weird!

I mean it’s pretty scray – and that’s the problem with VPS – to know that your data is not private or safe.

If the customer data is not, imagine your own, on your tiny little VPS…

    :/
