KiloServe contacted me a few days ago about their new BudgetBox VPS plans. I think “KiloServe” would be quite inappropriately named, especially when with $6.99/month, you get not 1 kilo, nor 100 kilo, but a VPS with 1,048,576 kilo bytes of memory. Here is a direct sign up link, and you get
- 1GB memory
- 10GB storage
- 300GB/month data transfer
- OpenVZ/SolusVM
Servers in Los Angeles CA. A bit of traceroute shows that they are hosting with imountain.com, with their solar-powered “data center” next to a highway in Pomona. KiloServe.com was registered in Feb 2007 and they have been in business for 4 years. Domain registration detail is hidden behind WHOIS privacy. Both NS on the same box — although it might be some very beefy box. It appears that they might have started as a proxy server provider, but now offers OpenVZ, Xen HVM and KVM hosting.

Great analysis of the name lowendadmin, I would +1 this if I could :)
Yes you can, just click the google +1 button :P
Most of the providers here have strange names. This one isn’t very different.
Kilo can also stand for K in the phonetic alphabet as well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICAO_spelling_alphabet
Their monster node must eat lots of Amp’s
I had 2 512/1024MB, 10GB storage, 300GB/month data transfer VPS with them that I won in a bid at WHT for $2/mo and $4/mo.
Both VPS were located at Pomona, CA and they had great uptime and performance (Good I/O & Speed). The only reason I canceled my service is that I felt uncomfortable. I won the bid when their main site was suffering from a heavy ddos attack and were down for 2 days. Furthermore, I just got an AMD Athlon 4200+ dedi for $35/mo from VD.
AFAIK KiloServe also offer Low End Dedi box from time to time.
Good to see you here Kilo
Wow, another VPS that I have purchased…
Sometimes I do not realise how many VPS I have until I start to notice I almost see at least one post everyday from one of the providers that I have a box with…OK, may be once every 3 days/twice a week or something.
Only 10GB storage …
Funny when you said it and your own website charges a lot more for VPSes that half of them have less than half of 10GB of hard drive space:
http://www.tianchaohost.com/softlayer-host.html
Site in Chinese language (the VPS they are selling on this particular page is in US), if anyone needs translation I will be happy to provide.
Funny too.We offer shared hosting only,no VPS.”SoftLayer LiteSpeed虚拟主机” means the data center of shared hosting is SoftLaye, and the webserver is LiteSpeed.I am very interested in who translated this page. – -!
So 虚拟主机 means shared hosting to you? Sorry I have not been in China for a while, but “virtual server” (what the phrase literally means) = shared hosting is pretty new to my dictionary. My apologies for incorrectly translating this.
Apologies to everyone else as well, did not mean to hijack the post or doing advertising on any language for anyone.
It’s just a cultural difference.
(^_^)
Sounds like a hawkhost reseller to me
@96mb – Aiya, mei guan xi, da ge. Wo ye ting de bu dong, shuo de bu fang bian. :) Wo bu zai je li de di fang.
We do not oversell disk space like many companies do.
We use RAID 10 for storage AND backup space.
So for 10GB we use:
+10GB because of RAID10
+10GB for VPS system backup
+10GB for user backup space
10GB of RAID 10 space and backups actually uses 40GB of space.
100GB of user disk space can use up to 400GB of actual space.
We provide a high-performing product at <$7, unlike other VPS that promise the world of resources in a dirt slow server.
LowEndBox admin Pomona* :p
Hello Gentlemen
Thanks for the kind words vRozenSch00n. That 2 day downtime on our main site was due to a bug in the HSphere Control panel upgrade.
All of our VPS kept on running when our main site was down and did not have downtime.
The downtime you saw was due to our HSphere cluster upgrade for shared hosting. But for a new client who just signed up, it is understandable for you to be wary of a host whose website disappeared for a couple of days. Most people don’t know we have been providing VPS since 2007 (FreeVPS and WIndows VPS virtualization) Hope you will rejoin us someday after you tire of your dedi. :)
96mb, you are everywhere :)
Oops, sorry Kilo, I thought it was an attack (reminds me of Hostrail), and I’m not worry because I won the bid. And you are right none of my VPS ever had any downtime with you.
Heh heh heh, VD support is pretty slow, but they know what they are doing. And guess what, your dedi offer is also quite tempting, you know :)
I got one VPS with them. Their support is really good, about 10 mins to answer your question, helpful and honestly.
Recommend for everyone :D
Agreed, those guys really tried hard to get to the bottom of the issues, whether it is an issue caused by my own stupidity or not.
Yo Kilo just started a new bid at WHT
I got their last Xen last time, looks like they do not have Xen anymore…
Bidding link is here for those who are interested in taking part of this week’s auction: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1055937
Nice thanks for sharing , now lets do some bidding :)
I’ve got a nickle…
Actually I;m not kidding. Spent all morning doing laundry. Have about 9 cents to my name. :(
@drmike: sell one of your VPSes may be? :)
As I’ve said a number of times previously, I only offer shared hosting and dedicated servers with our hosting. And the only personal VPS I have is with Quickweb.
Dedicated servers worth a lot more than VPSes!
@Adam: Good luck!
Not really a discussion for here but VPS providers probably make more per box then I do with leasing out a box whole.
@drmike: True, until some day someone could invent a way to oversell dedicated boxes I guess :)
Actually, really silly question here: how could you tell the differences between a dedicated box and a VPS, I mean, most of the people who buy dedi boxes don’t make a trip to a data centre to check their boxes right?
You can still oversell bandwidth on a dedi.
I could tell the difference between a VPS and dedi, even if they used VMWare/Xen HVM/KVM/etc
@96MB: Not a silly question, detecting hypervisor-level rootkits was something of a hot topic in the security world for a while. I think interest has moved on to hardening CPU instruction sets and OSes to prevent rogue hypervisors from installing in the first place, but I’m sure you can still find plenty of discussion surrounding “blue pill” detection too.
But with the standard off-the-shelf “friendly” hypervisors out there (KVM, Xen, VMWare, etc.), it can be as easy as running a recent Linux kernel and checking the dmesg output to see what virtualization it detected or which guest drivers it activated (the latest Linux kernels even includes guest drivers for Microsoft’s Hyper-V now!). But that’s because the standard hypervisors don’t try to hide themselves, they want the OS to know about them so it can optimize itself for them.
With hypervisors that want to remain hidden, like rootkits, it’s trickier. I think general consensus seems to have settled on detection should always being possible with some sort of a timing attack, and while it’s got the usual elements of the cat-and-mouse game of all malware/anti-malware wars, it’s unlikely to ever really take off since it’s preventable enough in the 99.99% of cases where you do control the hardware (e.g. just switch off VT-x in the BIOS) that it’s not worth the time of malware authors.
@96mb
Then Colo is the solution xDDD
@fanovpn: so basically for most of the common commercial products, finding out if the box is a VPS or actually a dedi is as easy as checking the output of dmesg output? I was always wondering how people could find those out (besides the performance, presumably, will be a lot better), so it is great to learn something new! Thanks a lot!
@Yomero: Anyone wants to colo for 96MB RAM of dedi boxes? P.S.: I am not ready to pay more than LEB prices for such colo:)
Why would you say they don’t have Xen? It’s on their ordering page. They may not have an offer for Xen, but they do still have it.
@Steve F: Sorry, I meant the monster VPS they used for the auction are out of stock, or they are no longer offering those as part of the auction at least for this time. My apologies for not being clear.
FYI *quote out of support ticket*
Unfortunately, we do not offer IPV6 and probably will not offer it for some time.
