LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

123Systems - $7 1GB OpenVZ VPS in Dallas

123Systems Andrew from 123Systems actually sent this offer to me quite a while ago. They are in the process of filling up their Limestone Network nodes, and are offering these LowEndBox special boxes for $7/month each. Here is the direct link to sign up, and here is what you will get

  • 1024MB memory (no burstable)
  • 20GB storage on RAID10
  • 1TB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers in Dallas TX (test IP: 64.31.18.7). Payment available with PayPal, AlertPay and Moneybookers. 123Systems has been around since early 2010 and has been featured quite regularly here on LEB. They did ventured into those cheap yearly plan before ($15/year for 192MB memory for example), although you might get a less crowded node with better disk IO on their regular plans.

You can’t find any worse vps than 123system.
I bought a year plan VPS from them.
My vps down and submit to require to fix it.
But no response from them for a lone time.

There plans are really cheap. You got more RAM and BW comparing to the price you give.
However, the performance (i.e. CPU, IO) are just so-so.
IO is around 30-40 MB/s all the time.

Have a $15year plan, so their templates are not very current and they have some issues, you need to use the solus console in order to fix them. The uptime has been decent (i dont have something important, just testing) and the network speed its good, the I/O i havent tested in a while.

Currently fixing an error in the ssh config from the template (debian 5).

    • I have 3 boxes (yearly plans)

For me has been like an 7/10. Mainly for their support (not very friendly).

But the boxes are ok n.n After some big issues several months ago, they have been good. Decent uptime and performance.

@ Yomero, I also have the $10/yr plan and have had the same experience. There were a couple bumps along the way, but overall decent uptime and performance.

Out of a scale of 10, they lose 1 point for support. This is nothing new, and anyone reading any reviews on the net for 123sys will find this to be valid. 1 point lost for the bumps along the way, only becuase I haven’t had similar bumps with other hosts. Still the experience was fairly good. I’d probably give them an 8/10 since I’ve had multiple VPS with them and my experience was overall good.

I have to note that I rarely need host support, that’t why they only lose 1/10 points for me. If someone frequently requires host support, on an unmanaged VPS, then you would discount more points than me.

        • I have some boxes with 123systesms, they are all just fine now.
I once had IO problem with my $10-$15/year plans; just about 27Mb-32Mb/s. As I sent out my requests, things are better, 45Mb-55Mb/s for $10-15/year plans is so good for me. If you consider the higher plans, you may get better IO speeds for your boxes, at least 60Mb/s. 123systems seem have no downtime as I have experienced for 8 months. All my plans have amazing connection speeds to Asia. However, the guys at 123systems are unfriendly, may be because they think $15 is not enough for a lunch. We do not need their help on our unmanaged boxes, but questions for upgrade were not answered as well. If you can stand that such horrible behavior then go 123systems. Otherwise, buyVM with Anthony, not Francisco, should be awesome.

        • Agree Rak, Generally you don’t need support. Also recently they have been working in automating everything, particularly the tun module enabling. It seems that you can do it directly in the client area n_n. I guess “tun” was the biggest part of the tickets.

Got that yearly special posted here last October from 123systems. The templates are indeed old as someone else mentioned.

I think it was in the beginning of 2011 that there were some problems with uptime. I had a few days where I had no access at all and uptime a few weeks after that was a bit shaky. But after that I haven’t had any issues with uptime.

Since I just use a squid proxy on the VPS I haven’t really noticed if he disk performance is bad. Don’t really notice any difference surfing through the proxy and using my home connection so I’m guessing bandwidth and processing power is decent.

dont get fool by seeing good support at first!!!!

dont buy vps from here!!! they are irresponsible. they deleted the node without alert. and said that we are not responsible and we wont take backup for clients :(

the deleted the node and replied like these

    me:what happened to my vps

    123systems:>

Unfortunately due to recent hardware issues, The data on this node has been deemed un-recoverable. The full story is below.

The node was force shutdown (We have been unable to figure out why at this time) which resulted in the node having to run a file system check (FSCK). While doing this it completely corrupted nearly all data on the server and rendered the entire /vz/ folder empty.

Your service has already been provisioned on the new node.

me:> the problem is frm ur side. Then u shud provide backup. We are having backup of 1mnth before. Wat abt curent mnth data? Wat the penalty for this one month our hardwork? Wat 123system wil do to help in ths? We need help in sum way as the pblm is frm management side.

123systems:> We are an completely unmanaged provider and client(s) are required to manage and maintain their own backups, We do not explicitly state we take backups for client’s, Regardless of who’s side the issue is on we still do not take or maintain backups for client’s.

    I lost 60days datas!!!!

*ALL* hardware will fail at one point or another. Especially harddrives as they are mechanical devices. ALL mechnical devices degrade with time and use.

Some hardware failures result in data corruption with RAID arrays. This is uncommon, but it does happen. I’ve been with a few hosts over the years that have had similar disk array corruption after an unexpected shutdown and subsequent FSCK.

I fully agree with 123systems that they are not responsible for your data as they are an unmanaged host. You knew they were unmanaged when you signed on. You are fully responsible for your data.

I’m just a regular day to day user. I have a few low traffic sites, as well as pictures, music, movies, etc on my servers. Since that data is important to me, I make a backup with rsnapshot EVERY SINGLE DAY to an offsite location becuase it is that important to me.

Here’s an analogy. Lets say you had a pot of gold and a 12000 sq foot lot of land. You put the gold on the land. You wouldn’t just keep the land unprotected would you? No. You’d take very careful measures to protect the gold from outside intrusion, sink holes, floods, etc. Now treat your data as your pot of gold. Would you rely on your real estate agent (your unmanaged webhost) to protect your pot of gold (your data) for you since they sold you the land (your unmanaged VPS)? No. You’d take your OWN personal measures to make sure your pot of gold is safe and secure at all times.

    • @shakti,
I understand your issue. However, I believe 123sys will be responsible if the problem is on their end; I learned this from a guy here, sorry i do not remember exactly the case, look like $25 deposit back to customer account and one year for free was what they did because of their fault.

Once we used unmanaged boxes, we need backup the data ourselves. I do that twice a week from my own server to all my boxes from different providers, use the following simple script; we can take 1000GB from 2000GB Bw/month to backup the data :)

      ssh -l root VPS-IP ‘(All-command-should-be-ran-on-remote-VPS)’ | cat > ./my-server-local-file.tar.gz

    • Well. Take it as the fee for the lessons, unfortunately. It applies not only to low end boxes, but even for high end managed services you still need to make your own backup, if you value your data.

I automated rsync to backup LowEndBox every 2 hours, and then it goes to another place once each day. Once you’ve got the process going it’s pretty simple, and you certainly would not rely on providers’ promises that “they will look after your data”. Especially with low end providers who explicitly stated that these are unmanaged.

        Hi LEA,

I’m wondering how do you manage MySQL backups? Rsync seems not suitable for this.

        August 18, 2011 @ 8:00 am | Reply
        • Keith:

@jd Use mysqldump or mysqlhotcopy to create backup files on your vps first. Then use rsync to backup these files to another server.

          August 18, 2011 @ 8:06 am | Reply
        • I use mysqlhotcopy and then rdiff-backup. Since rdiff-backup only copies the changed blocks, and mysqlhotcopy creates raw MyISAM files, it would use very little bandwidth.

        • Automysqlbackup is the easiest way.

          http://sourceforge.net/projects/automysqlbackup/

We have been using it for years.

As a tip, run the script twice if you have the room:

          1) Do “separate directory” without the “Create Database” option backup so you can easily restore single databases
          2) Do the default full dump (not separate directories) WITH the “Create Database” option so you can have a quick way to restore your entire mySQL server.

    • Uptime is one thing, my postfix process still gets assassinated once every 5 minutes. The problem was fixed previously, but somehow it gets its way back automagically, and I decided to show a white flag.

And just to echo the comments others posted, they do fix problems via support tickets, however they like to close those lovely tickets without leaving a word.

Other than that, the box works exactly like any other LEB.

i have 2 VPS with them for 9 months. they have bad support and have many trouble. like now i can’t reinstall my VPS via SolusVM but still not resolved. they just make my 2 tickets Queque without solutions. after my contract end, i’ll move to another provider. before this case, my VPS down until more than 24 hours and my ticket status still server queque.

if uptime and great support is priority, don’t go with them. also, they don’t have any contact alternative. you just can contact them via WHMCS. when you send ticket to support [at] 123systems.net it will create new ticket and not sending mail.

  18. I recently got a box of “Linux-1GB-SolusVM-Special ($12/month)” plan at 123systems. As I found it performing much worse than another box of “Linux-192-Yearly-Special ($15/year)” plan, I then opened a support ticket. Instead of solving the problem, they downgraded my “192-Yearly-Special” to a very bad processor so that it performed triple slower than it used to. What a “smart solution”; I therefore had no reason to raise more complaints about the performance of my “Linux-1GB-SolusVM-Special” box :(

I still have some “Linux-192-Yearly-Special” boxes, Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz (cpu MHz=1196.999, cache size=12288 KB), with other accounts but I wont use them in such a stupid ticket, or else all my “Linux-192-Yearly-Special” boxes become “Linux-192-Yearly-useless” boxes. :)

        • OMG, My boxes are down again.
I am not sure how many times a week they are down. I only follow my boxes on SAT.

LOL, it was because all other boxes were down at the meantime. As long as they are back up then the io of my box goes down. :)

  20. I could not get any of my boxes work today. It seems that they are down for days, not for hours.
I realize the way 123systems doing their business. Once we get a box from them, the box runs smoothly like a butter for the first three months. After this happy time, they migrate the box to an oversold node that it will be look like those I have been experiencing today.
This is because I once did not listen to LEB community.

according to them, it’s your fault.
these people are so weird that their clients are their enemy, just simply rude, not answering tickets, just closing tickets, and 99% bad review at WHT, but strangely, they don’t change their act.
Everything is customer’s fault, very strange people.

Is confirmed? Do you emailed that guy?

And offtopic… how much is a “good offer” for a company like that?

    • “You can either take over the two servers OR move them over to yours”

      123Systems doesn’t have just 2 servers.
Also, I received today another spam mails with their offers xD

Maybe they just sell 2 of their servers?
But the 123systems.net is registered on
        “Date Registered: 2010-2-16”
So it is really 1 year 10 months :)

        • 2 servers and that amount of money each month/year? Damn, that is HEAVY overselling xD

Same here. They can’t possibly only have 20-someodd clients.

Look at the domain dates and the datacenter is exactly the same as per the WHT listing, 123systems happen to sell Shared, Reseller & VPS, Also they have been around 1Years 10months…

        Anymore needed?

        • DG & Everyone else,

I wasn’t aware of this portion of this thread until I actually scrolled up and read it. Anyhow, No that’s not us. I have [NEVER] listed my company for sale and I have declined purchase requests in the past. I have been actively involved with my company since Day 1 and I have no intentions of selling the company. I also am not selling [any] portion of client’s or service(s). If you ordered a service here then that’s where it’s going to stay. We have over 4,500 client’s in our active database with over 2,500 active virtual servers.

We have multiple server(s) with Limestone Networks and multiple Subnets (http://whois.arin.net/rest/org/SYSTE-82).

Hope this clears up your confusion.

    Also lets do some math:

    Monthly: $665.74 USD (24)

    $665.75/24 = $27.73 – $27.73/4 = $6.93

So my guess is that they have edited out the client numbers and put false replacements, I average the number of clients being around: 96?

123systems have 1000s of active IPs with Limestone and a plenty at Singlehop. I find it hard to believe they just have 90+ customers. I doubt 123systems is for sale.

      Maybe it is semoweb?

      October 31, 2011 @ 1:33 pm | Reply
      • Semoweb doesn’t use Limestone

Unless the sales thread gives a name, or somebody throws out any documents related to this sales, this remains doubtful.
Anyone can make up any kinds of stories on WHT.
          1) Some other providers might have been around 1Y10M, located in Texas, colo in Limestone…etc
          2) It is a scam offer

Francisco from BuyVM have often recommended people on WHT to buy Minecraft slots from Andrew!

I do not think BuyVM will recommend 123systems.net, if it was not a safe deal.

    • Yomero,

It’s just a promotional for Black Friday, It’s not a “Long Standing Package” that will be there for a long period of time like it was with eNet/Other Provider’s. As you can see we didn’t stoop into the $5~7 2GB market and I never intend to go that low. I’m not sure if you know what black friday is but it’s all about deals that are 40~50% off base price, This seemed adequate enough. You have no reason to worry. We have a great relationship with our Upstream (Limestone) and even if we were in trouble down the road they would always be willing to work with us for an extended period of time.

In regards to bandwidth, We have roughly 200TB (And growing) in our bandwidth pool at limestone, about 1/4 of that is used on a monthly basis thus leaving plenty of room to breathe.

We’ve been here for almost (2) years now and undoubtedly had our share of issues (As have all provider’s). When I started this company in early 2010 it wasn’t just a “hobby” it was a career and something I intended to do for years on. I started this almost 2 year ago with nothing but a budget $5 virtual server with BurstNET and expanded rapidly with having thousands of active client’s throughout the world. I have dedicated my time to building a strong business relationship with both our Chicago provider and our Dallas provider, This would nullify any “instant” closures down the road in the event of a financial crisis. I’ve made my share of mistakes before, One being how support was handled throughout the company. Which is what I intended to address once (and if) LEA featured the deal I’m quoting you about.

I’ve just (not even a week ago) hired a new director of support who will oversee how support is addressed throughout the company, Recently tickets were closed without a proper response and even some were addressed as some would see in a “Rude” manner. His main role in the company is to basically “clear the air” so to speak and bring new light in regards to how support is handled. Support did get careless in my tenure and I have no shame in admitting that it did. Over the next month I’m going to be “turning over a new leaf”, This basically means I’m going to be changing a lot of the day-to-day operations at 123Systems, First being support (Which is already being addressed by the staffer I just hired). With someone new and fresh looking over how the technical team does their job that leaves me time to focus on implementing new features/improving performance where it needs to be improved at/so on.

      -Andrew

  27. And another mail???
    $25 /year per 512? Damn.

    @Andrew

I am surprised you come here to comment, but then, I prefer that you ANSWER our tickets. Particularly the SLA claim tickets, that are in “posponed” state (and it means closed, because nobody look at them after). After this, now SOMEONE closed my tickets, and I am sure that I am not the only one with this problem.

I trusted several companies, and despite they were years and years in the market, some of them are closed now. So, doesn’t matter.

And about the support staff, well, we will see.
