DediPath is an absolute garbage VPS service.
I signed up to this offer for their SSD VPS service and chose the ‘Ubuntu 20’ operating system. Upon using it, I quickly began to realise I wasn’t using a stock version of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS as advertised. Instead, DediPath had deployed their own image of it, and it was stripped back and broken like hell. Nothing worked. They have molested it so badly that the Linux kernel running in it doesn’t even have PPP support. Toggling PPP in DediPath’s VPS management interface on it’s website does nothing to fix it either.
I also soon learn’t that ports are blocked as well which wern’t advterised on the services webpage, during signup or in the contract, and when I informed them of this problem, they tried to interrogate me why I wanted to use port 25 (e-mail) on a commercial service (lol?) and then start telling me about their problems with spammers, which really is none of my business. When you sign up to get a phone, you don’t start interrogating people about who are they going to call.
In another ordeal, IPv6 was enabled, so I tried to disable it to reduce the servers attack surface. I tried using the normal NetworkManager ‘interfaces’ file, but Linux wasn’t responding to it. I then tried to install Ubuntu’s new network manager ‘netplan’, and that reset the network stack, but then when I tried to change network settings, Linux’s was ignoring that as well.
It turns out these molested Ubuntu installations have OpenVZ installed into them, a buggy as hell virtualisation application that DediPath uses to manage their VPS’s. They use OpenVZ because their SSD VPS’s are shared hosting, which made complete sense as well given SSH was constantly dropping out every 5 minutes. Why? Because DedPath have oversold their servers and there isn’t enough resources to go around.
DediPath wern’t able to fix the problems OpenVZ was causing to the network stack, so they tried to play the ‘free upgrade’ card and gave me a KVM managed VPS which allows me to install a proper stock version of Ubuntu Server myself without DediPath’s newbie engineers screwing it up.
I asked support if they could download the latest version of Ubuntu Server and mount it to install it, but they kept trying to pull the wool over my eyes and mounting the original release back from in April 2020. It’s only when I kept pointing out they weren’t mounting the latest version like they said they would that they finally did it. Then they set the name of my server to something unrelated to it. I asked them nicely multiple times if they could please rename it to Ubuntu Server, but multiple ‘techical support specialists’ kept chiming in, one saying it can’t be done and then later admitting that it can be done, another telling me not to worry it won’t change my actual VPS. So really, it can be done but they are just lazy.
Three days of dramas, and DediPath just couldn’t deliver a simple, working VPS.
Don’t use DediPath if you need to work with proactive professionals that know what they are doing, otherwise you’re just going to have your time wasted.

It wasn’t the server that was the problem in the end, it was your staff Hank & George that got you this review. I don’t have a problem if people don’t know everything or make mistakes – I am willing to work with people like that, but I do have a problem with people that try to lie to me because they are lazy and then tell me how I should be running my own server.
I was able to dig into this a bit more.
To respond to your points. We do not use our “own” version of Ubuntu. To be candid we use the OpenVZ released version. PPP does work when toggled in the VPS panel. It will not work unless toggled.
We do block mail ports on deployment due to help fight against spam. We do give mail enabled ips or whitelist IPs upon request as long as they are not being used for email marketing / spamming.
As OpenVZ does not support ISO mounts we gave you a free upgrade to a KVM VPS so you can use your own ISO which was done. You then requested us to rename Operating System however it due to SolusVM limitations we do not have the ability to change the Operating System name on an iso. It takes the name from the ISO.
I do see you responded back requesting a refund which has been provided. The account has been closed. I am sorry you were not happy with your experience. I sincerely hope you find a provider that fits your need.
Yes DediPath does use it’s own version of Ubuntu. Ubuntu’s kernel has PPP support out of the box, DediPath’s ‘Ubuntu’ kernel does not. Even the text editor ‘nano’ has been removed. Every aspect that I touch was broken in one way other another, and that is the real reason why support ‘upgraded’ me to a KVM managed VPS where I could install Ubuntu myself, because even they couldn’t things working and figured it would be easier to work with Ubuntu out of the box.
Renaming the VPS was not a limitation of SolusVM. George originally change the name of of the VPS when he set it up to the name of the ISO that he mounted (an OLD version of Ubuntu Server). After I had to asked Hank a second time to download the latest version of Ubuntu Server, I asked him to rename the VPS to reflect the current version, and that’s when the lies started pouring in on this ‘limitation’. If it took the name of the ISO, then it would have changed when the ISO of the latest version of Ubuntu was mounted, which it didn’t. And if the name is set at the time the VPS was created, then why wasn’t a new VPS just created then. Support where completely aware it was a new VPS that hadn’t been touched.
Don’t worry, there are providers out there that can get it right ‘Ernie’.
