The growing tide of marijuana legalization seems to have an effect in the Munich legal system, as a group of jurists there who were clearly high out of their minds when they handed down a death sentence to a website owner who dared use Google Fonts.

Actually, it was only a $100 fine but that doesn’t lessen the level of idiocy or intoxication.  In the decision, the court stated that because a web site used CDN-hosted fonts, this forced the visitor to expose his IP address to Google.  OMG.  The UN High Court of Human Rights is no doubt going to follow up.

“The unauthorized disclosure of the plaintiff’s dynamic IP address by the defendant to Google constitutes a violation of the general right of personality in the form of the right to informational self-determination according to § 823 Para. 1 BGB,” the Google-translated ruling stated.

“Please click her to accept our cookie policy,” the ruling continued, concluding that “The right of Europeans to promulgate idiotic technology laws that create a senseless burden on their fellow humans shall not be restrained.”

Even in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of GDPR, the decision is illogical, as analyzed over on decoded.legal.  My favorite part is that the court states that the plaintiff was “not obliged to encrypt his own IP address before accessing the defendant’s website”.  I would think not because otherwise…oh, it’s so dumb not even worth mocking.
