I have been a follower of Rus’ Twitter feed for a while, and have recently learnt that he has quit VAServ and started another VPS hosting company — DamnVPS. Yeah you thought something like FsckVPS was slightly inappropriately named, this one is not any better. It has just announced the opening offer on their blog, and for $5.95/month you can get the following system
- 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
- 15GB storage
- 1TB/month data transfer
- OpenVZ
These apply to only US-based OpenVZ plans, and you can choose between Los Angeles (West Coast), Dallas (Center) or New Jersey (East Coast). Not too sure about the availability of these locations, as the company has just been set up.
Well. Rus has certainly been a veteran in the virtual server hosting space. All the best to his new venture.

I’ve seen Rus sell start up and sell a few hosting companies so I wouldn’t be surprised if sometime down the road the same thing happened. However, I’m’ currently beta testing one of their VPS and I have to say it’s pretty good and I’m liking all the things that he’s offering. The prices are pretty awesome, too.

@Srikanth — you only pay VAT if you are in UK/EU. Otherwise in the following page where you enter in your address, you can update the amount if you are not in UK/EU.
UK is on Europe so you haven’t to say UK/EU.

Thats 100% right, so would you seriously trust this guy with your VPS again? I had a VPS with him then, and I lost all my data. Ok nothing important, but what if it had been.

I’ve ordered a Xen VPS, to give it a try. Let’s see what follows. The first question is how quickly it will be set up.

Anyway. I signed up to an OpenVZ VPS just to test out. Xeon 5620 boxes which you can burst to full 4 cores. Still got some rough edges with the templates, and damn I hate SolusVM. Maybe it’s just me who kept on having issues with SolusVM with multiple providers.
Interested in their Xen package. any suggestion about Xen PV and HVM? Which one to choose?
Not provider-bashing, just someone who lost their VPS and looked damn stupid having recommended the company to many others.

That’s 60+GB machine that can probably squeeze in 100+ 512MB VEs. I would be more interested to see the output of `vzlist` on a fully loaded machine :)

I wonder how much a E5620 server with 60 gb of ram would cost per month?
@ earl – I’d hope that they own their own servers and colocate them. Most dedicated server providers charge about $25-50/mo per 2GB of RAM so that’d be very expensive.
@ Mudel, I guess your right.. so how much you think a server like that would cost? I guess they make it back in a couple of months time..

E5620 retails at $400
2GB DDR2 RAM usually retails at $50-60
RAID10 card will vary but count for $300+
Hard drives – he just says 2TB so not sure what the disks actually are but there’s at least 4 for RAID10
Then there’s the chassis, motherboard, and power supply.
So let’s say $800 for the CPUs, $1500 for the RAM, $300 for the RAID card = $2600. So probably $3k when considering disks, chassis, mobo, and PSU.
I would have no idea. Just went to Dell.com and tried to configure an R610 or R710 and couldn’t find options to use Xeon 5620. And the RAM price. ARGH! Well. Those discussion probably belong to HighEndBox.com, not here :)
@Mudel $50 for 2GB — are these ECC memory suitable for 5620? Also 64GB would require 32 sticks of those which I doubt the motherboard has. If you go for 4GB/stick (16 sticks) then the price would probably more than double.
@LowEndAdmin yeah.. I think the server would only take ECC memory.. and they are pricey.. I guess with the HD they use SANS?
by the way LowEndAdmin.. you have found some excellent deals lately!! it’s killing me. I can’t stop myself from buying!!

@earl — SANS would be an external storage. Maybe you meant SAS drives? Exercise some self control will help you not buying up too many cheap virtual servers in your world domination plan :)

@Daniel It was eventually revealed that Rus’ poor choice of passwords and method of storing them was what allowed the crackers to use HyperVM as a tool to lose all those VPSes. He later quietly acknowledged this in a forum post.
However, it was without doubt, a very costly mistake, and I’m sure he’s learned his lesson. Considering the scale of the event, I’d imagine that he’d be extremely careful not to make the same mistake again.

The holding page actually said iomart on it at one point, but now it does not. But having spoken to Rus about this about a week ago, this is actually an iomart project (the people who own RapidSwitch) and not his own, they just employed him the moment he left Blue Square after selling vaserv.
Does anyone see their slogan and mistake it for “We don’t give a damn about our customers”? LOL. I don’t know why my eyes to do that to me.

I was a beta tester and I’d say damnVPS provides great servers. A bit pricey compared to other low end box over here but I think it’s worth it.
I’ve got a Xen HVM Machine. It’s excellent. I can easily hit 6mb/s. I’ve not pushed it at all yet, as my Debian installation is only running OpenVPN and Lighttpd at the moment (using 32MB RAM!)

Well I decided to give it a shot and so far so good setup was pretty much instantaneous. Network speed is great and the server seem to perform a lot better then my vps I had on enotch. I will comment at the end of the month with my full review.
Just an update there was a suspension on my vps (Completely my fault I ordered the vps while I was still ssh’d in my old vps and it got triggered as a suspected IP address) Rus resolved the issue within 10 min of me opening the ticket after I explained what had happened. So far support is great!!
Received email that DamnVPS is rebranding with a new name: ThrustVPS.
Where does rus get these names from lol…
Don is right, damnVPS is now called thrustVPS.
Personally, I don’t think that changing from damn to thrust affects the company’s ‘image’ anything at all.
Anyhow, they’re looking pretty steady for now.
Here is my honest unbiased review of DamnVPS
I’ve been using DamnVPS for less than 2 months.
Initially had the 512 and upgraded to 1GG recently.
On the 512 I got 1 CPU core, on the 1GB I got 2 cores. Even with 1 Core the CPU is really fast. I think it’s quite fair.
PROS:
The Kernel is one of the latest and secure, 2.6.33.X
Fast CPU, Intel Xeon E5620 2.40GHz with 12MB Cache
Good Technical Support, they always replied so quickly.
Variety of Linux Available.
OpenVPN and NAT works well.
Excellent Price.
Cons:
I had 2 reboots since then.
Overall it’s an Excellent Service and has a very good Value for the money.
I hope they get more stable.
I am not sure if I’d recommended them (yet) for serious hosting. At will give them at least 1 year before I host serious apps there.
I am hosting Ruby on Rails only, which is really easy to deploy to new server.

actually I think that the rebranding “WILL” help in the long run game. DamnVPS was ok, but using a word considered derogatory surely had some impact on potential customers that were turned off by it or felt that it devalued the companies services in some way.
ThrustVps doesn’t feel derogatory at all compared to DamnVps. Sure, the word “Thrust” is kind of “In your face action”, but that’s a totally different angle. One can now get a VPS that will Thrust them to new levels of success, faster speeds, and put you in the website game. That’s the feel I get from the new brand name anyways.
