Constantinos, the CEO of HostRail, emailed me about their special for the LowEndBox readers. Use the promo code Lowendbox to get 50% recurring discount. Their VPS packages starts from $4/month after the discount, for a “1 Power Unit Server”, which has
- 128MB memory
- 30GB storage
- 200GB/month data transfer
- OpenVZ/HyperVM
According to their About Us page, VPS nodes (if I understand the map correctly) are in either Dallas, Houston or Chicago. However there does not seem to be a way to select the location when you order. Their website hosted in Limestone Network so let’s just assume they are in Dallas. Company office in Phoenix AZ though.
It has been in business since 2004, and the domain registered since 2007. WHOIS protection on the domain. 30 days moneyback guarantee. They are related to MrWebServer that was featured early this year though — VPS link on MrWebServer now simply go to HostRail.

LEA (LowEndAdmin) is the original founder of LowEndBox and the visionary who gave rise to an entire movement around minimalist, efficient hosting. In 2008, LEA launched LowEndBox with a simple but powerful idea: that it was possible to run meaningful applications, web servers, VPNs, mail servers, and more – on small, low-cost virtual machines with minimal resources.
At a time when most infrastructure discussions were dominated by high-end servers and enterprise platforms, LEA championed the opposite approach: lightweight Linux distros, self-managed servers, open source software, and thoughtful optimization. This philosophy gave birth to the term “Low End Box”, which would come to define a new genre of hosting tailored to developers, tinkerers, and budget-conscious users around the world.
Through LowEndBox and its companion forum, LowEndTalk, LEA built the foundation for what would become one of the most active and enduring communities in the hosting world, prioritizing knowledge-sharing, transparency, and accessibility.
After several years of nurturing the site and community, LEA stepped away from active involvement, passing the torch to a new generation of admins, contributors, and moderators. Today, LEA remains a respected figure in the LowEnd ecosystem, credited with launching a platform and philosophy that continues to influence thousands of infrastructure providers and users globally.
LowEndBox’s legacy, and its thriving community, is a direct result of LEA’s original vision.
Mine is in Dallas on Limestone Networks.
Quote from the TOS:
“Users may not:
…
Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, such as IRCD.”
Seems a little counter-productive, especially since your target audience are people looking to run web servers i.e. HTTP daemons.
All you have to do is keep an SSH session open and watch log messages go by.
Regarding the TOS:
“Users may not:
…
Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, such as IRCD.”
This will be removed shortly.
This has now been updated. Thanks for pointing this out.
Decent prices for the plans, I notice RAM is always a major changing factor in plan price. The cheaper plans have very little.
@Mark don’t forget that LowendBox readers have a 50% recurring discount for all of the VPS plans. Use promo code “Lowendbox”.
Hey. The offer you posted on WHT is even better :) With coupon code WHTOFFER you can get
For $2/month recurring! You do need to fix up the distro list though — they look like from last decade :P
It is the same, just a smaller VPS. WHTOFFER does 50% off
My VPS is in Dallas just as the dmmcintyre3’s. And the best ping time I had from my country is with HostRail. My website loads very quickly. I am totally satisfied with their service.
I did not wanted to contact the support at least one time. And also no downtime. Did not wanted to restart my server at least one time after I transferred my website to them. And even they are using OpenVZ, I can’t think they are overselling. Because I did not had a high server load alert ever. And also most of the time CPU load is between 0.02 and 0.10(too good to be true. No? But it is!)
So far I’m 100% satisfied with HostRail.com. Can’t remember even one bad thing about them. :P
Even some day I went off them, I’ll be keep suggesting them to others.
@LowendBoxAdmin: Yes we just released that package, known as Half Power Unit. The promo code “LowendBox” is also valid for that package.
YEY! I got 0.21 CPU load today. It’s a big step for me. ;)
I was able to install nginx 0.8.49 on the ubuntu build with:
./configure –without-http_rewrite_module –without-http-cache –without-http_gzip_module
I actually like what I am hearing, however I have a few problems.
One I tried to get the “4 Power Units Server”, but when I click on the Buy Now is has the 3 Power Unit instead and I cannot figure out how to get the one I want. Going to contact them directly, but just wanted to make sure that people are checking when they click on it, if you don’t look carefully at the specs you will end up with a much lower spec server. Granted at a lower price.
The other issue I have is they seem to overcharge for Cpanel. $20 a month is pretty steep. Although with the discount from here it is a bit more reasonable.
Hello Clint,
Thanks for reporting that problem, we will fix it ASAP.
You can order the 4 Power Units server from https://hostrail.com/cart.php?gid=2
Regarding cPanel we are looking to decrease the price.
Choice of OS seriously needs an upgrade. But the offer is pretty cool. I just got a 1power unit server for $1.49 with the coupon code. (Is this intentional? – 256MB at 1.49 $ is pretty cool. Hope there are not overload issues).
Hello JP:
We have already added plenty more OS Choices.
None of our servers are overloaded, we hate overselling. Additionally when a new VPS is ordered we have a system that auto-checks all servers in our HyperVM Cluster and assigns your order to the Server with the least load, we have additional overloading tests running on a 24 hour basis and being monitored by our own Network Operations Center Staff.
mira, el hosting parece ser confiado, pero el problema es que, ya puse el código del contrato me enviaron al email un papel y luego no se que hacer :S
