They’re a web design shop that offers templates for multiple platforms, including WHMCS and Blesta. Recently I checked in with Armand, the owner and founder, and ran through some questions with him to update our community.

Q: Please give us a quick summary of what AA Layer is all about.
AALayer, is a Web Design Agency based in Tirana, Albania. It is registered under another brand, locally, and has been operating for the hosting industry since 2020 under the name ‘AALayer’. However our services to hosting companies dates back to 2016 when i first started getting involved in LowEndTalk/LowEndBox and hosting in general.
Q: How has web design evolved over the years? It seems to me that in 2023 customers want more than just some simple templates.
That’s true. The days when simple templates were a thing are gone. Hosting ‘companies’ are made daily and the market is getting flooded, therefore the prices are being lowered and companies need to start getting creative to attract more customers. Therefore every company & business in the hosting market wants to look(website) unique & modern to get ahead of their competition.
Q: Let’s talk about your themes marketplace. You self host, whereas some of your competitors put their work on ThemeForest, etc. Obviously, with self-hosting you’re not paying a commission to another marketplace, but then you don’t get the benefit of that marketplace’s exposure. How has the marketplace been going?
That’s correct. We have our own marketplace to sell premade themes which is similar to what Themeforest or other theme marketplaces offer. We are not even close to their sales, nor do we dream to.
Because Themeforest in particular is very big and offers premade themes for every type of business & industry, something we don’t. My goal has always been to make the biggest theme marketplace only for the tech & hosting market.
Something i am proud of right now because we recently hit 1,000 premade theme sales, so things are pretty good so far!
Q: You do WHMCS and Blesta – have you considered any other platforms?
Yes, we have and we plan to release our themes and new themes for different billing platforms too in the near future. However for now our services are primarly WHMCS and Blesta.
Q: You recently mentioned FOSSBilling on your blog. What do you think about selling some themes for that platform when it’s a little more mature as a way to support that project?
I have been looking closely at the project since the announcement and github publish. – FOSSBilling is under my radar and once it is stable and i see requests, we are going to release themes and templates for that billing solution too.
Q: How do you make sure your themes are SEO-friendly? Is that even a consideration?
Most of our themes include full metatags required for search engines / social networks and make sure our themes are 0 error for SEO related and responsiveness issues that will penalize your SEO in general.
Q: I’m a little surprised you don’t do WordPress themes, given how huge that platform is.
Personal taste, have tried it in the past and have no plans to go back to. Have denied many projects requiring WordPress.
Q: By the way, where does the name AA Layer come from?
AA or AA+ stands for quality and Layer obviously for something related to graphic/design/themes. So AALayer. Ofcourse there’s still room for more improvements. As it goes in every job!
