This is a useful post and Racknerd seems interesting. But this whole page reads like a big advertisement, so really I suggest a Disclaimer either “they paid us for advertising” or “sponsored post” or “we were not paid to write this and none of our staff are connected to this company but we just really love their offerings”…

I’ve just never seen LEB post anything like this before, so it seems weird. Anyway great info and thanks for the detailed database of networks, perhaps more transparency about money (etc) would help though.

I have to add to Adam’s comment here. Only a week or two ago, I started wondering what’s going on here between RackNerd and LEB. They were featured or talked about in heavy succession between the offerings, the interview, the tutorial, the “Recent Featured VPS & Dedicated Server Offers We Liked Best” feature, and now yet another offering (and I do think they have nice offers!) This post is not meant to be critical of RackNerd or LEB, and I hope that no offense is taken, but really either there’s something going on here, or LEB’s possible (over)excitement, or (over)hype, for any particular brand is beginning to bring on suspicions.

I think that if RackNerd is doing well, and growing, that’s great, and same for LEB. But LEB shouldn’t become a cheerleader for any particular host, nor should it have “resident hosts” whose presence is emphasized far beyond normal.

RackNerd may have a lot to offer (thus the extra content in the past month), but the excitement/hype/energy should be tamed and moderated by LEB. It might sound like I’m saying that RackNerd is getting too much attention, let’s give it a rest, or stop featuring them so much, but what I’m really asking here is more of an identity-level question: does LEB want to be a place that does this (as it may have in the past), or does it want to be a more neutral guide (or reference) and resource that allows good hosts/offers to flourish, but doesn’t start taking sides or showing signs of “extra” influence, even if NOTHING is going on behind the scenes, which is my first guess btw. I think both sides may indeed be honest and upfront, but do you see where LEB could be heading? And is this something that should be worked out now while LEB has demonstrated a number of positive changes, instead of waiting for these potential alliances or affiliations, or “featured hosts” to become the new norm?

So what I’m asking here is NOT: shouldn’t we temper down good hosts and prop up upcoming/risky hosts, and try to level the playing field. It’s more along the lines of: what is LEB’s role here? Does it want to become a sponsor/promoter/cheerleader of “good” hosts? And I’m not saying that it is doing this intentionally, but it could be seen that way depending on what happens down the road. Or does it just want to focus on hosts/experiences/reviews without taking on the extra (possibly passive) role of promoter/sponsor/cheerleader, or even affiliate, etc.

This is not really a comment for, or about RackNerd. It’s a question for the community and for LEB. It could appear that LEB is taking a risk here on RackNerd, but should it be taking these types of risks in general? Should it be a cheerleader for good hosts? or should it allow good hosts to be featured, but without showing so much confidence (or space on the site) for the ones that seem to be doing well (at least for now)? Maybe it’s just a coincidence that so much content was released during past few weeks that featured RackNerd, and maybe from now on, they’ll only be on here once per month. But again this is not a criticism of RackNerd, or of LEB’s decision to have them as a “Resident Host”. That’s up to them. It’s more along the lines of: does LEB want to go down this road? Does LEB want to create suspicion, have viewers wondering what’s going, or who’s affiliated with who, or who’s paying who, etc. Does LEB want to have hosts competing for attention (or space on the site), etc. or does it want to remain more neutral, no “resident hosts”, just hosts (some better than others), and feedback. Just some thoughts.

    • Om123,

Thanks for being active within our community, it’s great to see you and so many others being engaged and involved. You definitely bring up fair points there, and I completely understand where you are coming from. I’d like to clarify that any legitimate provider can be listed on LEB by following our submission guidelines at: https://lowendbox.com/submit-an-offer/ — starting a few months ago we have begun active outreach to various hosting providers welcoming them to submit exclusive offers to share with our community. As long as it’s within our guidelines no more than one offer per month, within our pricing limitations, etc. and there are no issues with the provider i.e. large customer complaints/negative feedback. Every host is eligible to be posted on our website at no charge. My goal is to grow the community. I’ve also been personally handling the offer submission desk to ensure that 100% of submissions are acknowledged and worked through — even the ones that don’t meet our guidelines are politely answered — this is a big improvement compared to how offer submissions were handled in past years prior to my taking ownership of the websites.

Resident Host was a term that was utilized a couple years ago, but the status hasn’t been nurtured or maintained up until recently (as part of our broad efforts to freshen things up and improve every element of our community). The list of providers who are considered “resident hosts” are actively growing by the week, as you can already see by recent postings on LEB and more to come/scheduled. The criteria is simple, any provider who is respected, has proven to take care of their customers, our community members who sign up, generally has a positive reputation as a brand, and actively engages with the community is eligible to become a Resident Host. Those are just a few of the criteria we look for when adding more hosts into our Resident Host classification. Also I am working to publish additional guidelines about who, how and when providers can become Resident Hosts (it’s on the list, and every day that list of to-do’s gets smaller).

While I recognize from your viewpoint that it may look like RackNerd appears to be favored (it looks like they are a fan favorite here however!) I promise every provider is getting equal love from LEB (where as not every provider engages equally with the community, something I like to see and have been pushing at every opportunity) – anyone who’s willing to participate is welcome to. Anyone who submits an offer has been scheduled as long as they are a reputable host without any outstanding issues. We are scheduling and writing offers everyday and helpdesk tickets are all being responded to. All we want here is an active community.

I’ve also made significant efforts to marshal provider participation from our community on LowEndTalk regarding:

      1. Interviews
      2. Service Reviews
      3. Tutorials
      4. OP-Ed Articles

We have tons of content already written and scheduled for the next 6 months. Lot’s to look forward to!

By posting all of these ideas/projects/initiatives on LowEndTalk it ensures that everyone gets a chance to take part and benefit from the collective improvement of LowEndBox and LowEndTalk.

Hope that helps give some insight.

The questions and suspicions about what’s going on behind the scenes of LEB have been persistent on LEB/LET/etc. for years. I appreciate the number of recent improvements that have been made to the site, and I love to see new hosts come up and do well. I hope the best for both RackNerd and LEB. My comment was only designed to ask whether or not LEB wants to continue having people second-guess what’s going on behind the scenes (a phenomenon which could be undermining many of the positive improvements that have been made to the site), or if it wants to be known as a more neutral third-party. By having “Resident Hosts” and by the (possible coincidence of a) recent handful of RackNerd mentions in the past month, this could be seen, if it continues with this host (or any other host!), as a reason to question LEB’s endorsements, or recommendations, etc. How trustworthy are LEB’s offers? Does LEB want people to continue asking this question? Perhaps it’s the difference between a host being a fan-favorite, and LEB’s “extra” (not necessarily monetary) investment in these fan-favorites. I’m not expecting answers to these questions, it doesn’t matter much to me either way. If these thoughts resonate with other people who view this site, the questions/accusations/concerns/suspicions may simply come up again and again. ;-)

Apologies to Dustin as I didn’t particularly want to talk about these topics on his offer page, but there wasn’t a better location off-hand to mention something that came up as a result of this current offer. This is not a critique of RackNerd’s offers, energy, integrity, or recent contributions, just some thoughts about the long-term direction that LEB is taking as it evolves towards a hopefully better resource for everyone.

        • Om123,

I agree with you that the idea of “Resident Host” along with all of the other sub category designations need refinement.

The idea came about in 2015 by Maarten, a prior Administrator of LowEndBox and LowEndTalk – and a really smart guy to boot. The concept was to be able to delineate between providers who are real businesses, have a positive reputation and are engaged in the community, from other providers.

You can read his announcement about it from 2015 here: https://lowendbox.com/blog/changes-are-coming-to-lowendbox/

I welcome any suggestions you might have in how we can improve all of the sub groups. Perhaps that tweaking the concept, or eliminating it, etc.

          Thank you!

          Jon

Jon, feel free to send me an email to the address that I type in to send this post. I have a number of suggestions, but I really hate to be cluttering up Dustin’s offer page with this kind of thing, since it’s possibly more of an LEB issue than a RackNerd issue. Thanks.

            Dustin, thanks for your understanding!

The major point you made here is that you think, LEB should not promote the companies who has good offers and has good reviews because that make those companies too standing out. Should those companies been made standing out, of course it should. That’s why as a LEB user I come here. So if LEB according to you, “neutrally” does not promote those companies who offers more affordable and reliable VPS to the users here, what are you here for? Looking for a KVM to $25 a months?

Regardless, LEB is a private owned website and it has all the right to do anything they want. If one company has more offer recently, so they get more visibility. Very normal and very reasonable. As far as you concerned, I think it does not make much sense.

Keep up the good work LEB and many service provider here, in the past, now and in the future!

Our goal is eventually to allow Window’s OS on our KVM product line – we are simply in the process of an SPLA agreement for Microsoft.,

All I can add here is after the massive host collapse at the end of ColoCrossing running this site I was a bit wary to order more services especially those with a yearly package. Been extremely happy with the service with RN.. no downtime other than maintenance, support is responsive and speeds have been good not only on order but several months later things remain good. I’ve sent several people their way and they are happy as well. I don’t expect perfection from low cost hosts so it’s a surprise when you do get it.

Dustin is very responsive and patiently answered all my queries. Though I couldn’t be his customer, for now, I would highly recommend “Racknerd” for the amazing support (it’s very hard to see these in Budget VPS providers). So if the specs and budget are the right fit for you, then feel free to buy the VPS from Racknerd. Best wishes to everyone.

        Hi Dustin,

Hope you remember, I was having problem paying through my debit card, now I paid the invoice from another source of mine of U.K. You really put a great support to solve my issue. I admire your effort.

I think payment gateway had some issue because I used my same card on NameSilo.com and DyaDot.com to purchase some domains for my client without any problem.
Anyway, I managed to pay. Hosting Server seems to be good at the moment.

This is my testing account. Hope we have good business and I will recommend my clients too.

        Please check my ticket #604724.

I just wanted to thank Racknerd sales for their honesty and personal touch. I originally wanted a server to use for proxies for accessing sneaker-websites and contacted them first to see if I could get a test. The sales guy on the phone explained up front how strict those sneaker sites usually are so no promises if the IPs would work for my requirements. I ended up buying a cheap vps for testing the ipv4 and it worked out well. The performance is great and the personal touch is something i recognize.

I am still learning the VPS world so I can start reselling them down to people who want to run there own bots.

Dave Id recommend the cloudflare DNS servers 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Faster resolution overall and probably doesn’t have the NSA spying on your DNS queries lol. I recently switched my router at home too.

For anyone using their services, what is the catch? I know the marketplace drives down costs, but this is almost too good to be true.

RACKNERD- Reseller-LEB-120GB goes for a shockingly low price. At $45 a year, that’s insane. Can anyone speak to year 2 and 3 costs?

    Thanks everyone!

HI Max, Contrast to you experience, my two VPS on the same node LOS Angeles DC02 are both very stable, not a single down in last two weeks. Looks like the issue is specific to your VPS instance(s) only because if it is server node issue all the vps will be impacted. Creating a ticket with vendor is a better option to figure out the problem. Logs are always admin’s friend to understand what the problem is if you want to check by yourself.

Hi Max, I have to correct one of my comments earlier: “on the same node” – I mean on the same data center DC02, and I don’t know if my VPS is exactly on the same node (physical machine) as yours. I have used “freshping.io” that you used to track my vps for a couple of days and here is the result:

          https://bin.jvnv.net/file/9reRs

          Here is my uptime: https://bin.jvnv.net/file/gVyeB

It shows 6 days because I restarted my vps 6 days ago.

You need figure out the downtime you experience is because of:
          1. the vps networking is down? — vps is functioning but networking is not
          2. the vps itself is down? – the physical host machine is working but vps may act slowly or completely down due to VPS itself.
          3. the host machine is down?

I guess you work with the technician of RackNerd to understand the real problem. Hope that helps.

            hi,Hover
Thanks for sharing your server Screenshot!
The Server problem of MINE is finally 99.99% solved. Following Suggestions, suggested by CEO of RackNerd [Dustin B. Cisneros].
Unfortunately after server problem was solved i was HIT by another problem of MY IP being blacklisted.
Then i tried to contact via ticket but the response i recived from TICKET was unexpected & unsatisfactory from rackned customer support.

So finaly i have to approach to CEO [Dustin], guess what the response i receive from CEO was very amazing and he took note of my problem & assured to solve it at his best… And now the IP 104.194.225.xxx blacklisting problem seems to be finally being SOLVED… Although up till now i haven’t received any clarification from CEO, BUT i will assume the problem being SOLVED as on checking on https://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx the ip seems OK now!

        • Hi Max, I’ve responded to your email – it looks like you have some default firewall rules installed by CyberPanel (The control panel you installed on your server) which is rate-limiting/blocking ICMP/ping requests, and thus creating false positives on freshping.io and HetrixTools.

          See:

          https://docs.hetrixtools.com/avoid-ping-false-positives/
          https://docs.hetrixtools.com/uptime-monitoring-ip-addresses/

In summary, your VPS was not actually offline but rather a false positive by the monitoring platforms you are using because of the software firewall installed by your control panel to limit incoming ICMP requests.

There are three options to handle this:

          1. Disable the firewall completely if you do not have a use for it

          2. Whitelist the monitoring server IPs

          3. Change the firewall rules to not restrict/block ICMP requests.

Please reply to my email, and we will go from there, I’m happy to help.
