LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

TropicHost - $15.90/3 Months 128MB OpenVZ VPS

Update Oct 2011 — been showing Under Construction for months, and the website is still offline. I guess I’ll just declare it officially in dead pool.

TropicHost Via this WHT offer. TropicHost is “yet another new OpenVZ virtual server provider” (there got to be an acronym for that!) Domain was registered in November 2009 (less than 2 months old), and their website is hosted with HawkHost. As the owner also owns ToughVPS.com which was a bit older, I am not quite sure about the brand change. They do have some cheap VPS plans, and you pretty much get 33% off when you prepay for at least 3 months. So for $15.90/3 months, you get

  • 128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 100GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ

Servers are with FDC Servers in Chicago IL. Those are supposed to be “managed” VPS although I cannot find the terms on what management is included.

What turned me off of these guys is that they advertise DDOS Protection yet they are hosted on FDCs standard network which doesnt have any protection.

  2. Maybe it’s something that they offer or support themselves? Granted on box protection is of less value than at the routers but it’s better than nothing.

Possibly but I think they would advertise if they had their own firewall. The WHT ad says
“We try our best to block out DDoS attacks on all servers.”. I’ll leave you to wonder what
    that means.

Looks like he/she own earthvps.com too. I just saw a thread at WHT here http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=879153 and take a look signature at post #5 :D

  6. Actually, the owners of EarthVPS are different from the owners of ToughVPS/TropicHost. I was the primary owner of EarthVPS before I sold it. Currently I am an employee for both ToughVPS/TropicHost which is owned by a different person. The name was changed from ToughVPS to TropicHost about 1-2 months ago. As far as our DDoS protection, it is not protected with hardware. We harden users VPS’ to reduce the risk of a DDoS attack. Due to confusion we no longer advertise this.

    @ Donald K.
I hope so it seems like a pretty scammy way to attract people honestly wanting ddos protection.
