This is the age of SaaS (software-as-a-service) and hosted apps. Seems like everywhere you turn there’s another web site where for $___ per month they will host something for you.
There are also “middle ground” sites like PikaPods.
What kind of apps are we talking about?
- Document storage, management and sharing
- Social network integrations or your own social networks
- Infrastructure like DNS and monitoring
- Office and collaboration, task management, and project management
- Family apps like recipe sharing and photo albums
…and tons more.
The LowEnd community is inherently a DIY group. There is a famous list of self-hosted lists. We also have a thread on LowEndTalk where people are discussing their setups.
