RackNerd sucks. Was using them for my small webhosting business, they had a major server failure, completely lost the instance one of my sites was hosting on. Provisioned a new one with an apology but no compensation, massive pain in the ass, good thing I kept good back-ups and my client was understanding. Never again.

    • Hi lol — Thank You for the comment. Would you mind emailing me directly at dustin@racknerd.com with more information about your experience? I would love to hear more about the backstory and investigate what happened. I’m not aware of any recent server failures that resulted in a complete data loss (we run all of our production nodes on RAID-10 protected arrays), so I’m curious if this was perhaps an experience with one of our resellers (versus being a direct customer of RackNerd), or maybe some sort of billing related mishap? I’m not entirely sure – without reviewing your account/situation, just throwing out ideas at this point with the limited information I have at the moment.

We’re not perfect (we’re only human), but when bumps do come up on the road, we’re always fast, responsive, and always there to assist our customers. That’s how RackNerd has earned the excellent reputation we have today and is voted the #1 top provider within the LowEndTalk community. We’re also fully transparent about any outages that we’re aware of, and that’s something customers can appreciate. Any and all outages, no matter how small (even non-service impacting maintenances), are reported on our status page at: status.racknerd.com

I look forward to hearing from you with more information — I’d love to assist.

There are always some random ids coming and going and complaining with 0 evidence, but just some empty words trying to bring competitors down. I bet you never used any RackNerd service. These guys are too simple, sometimes naive.

Server failures happen. Good thing you had backup. For me, their ticket response times are awesome, but their responses to your problem is off in left field. Answers don’t even have anything to do with your problem. Must be a language problem. Offshore tech support.
And time after time you are put off to other tech. I understand my services with them are ‘Una managed’, but some issues are theirs.

I wish they offered DNS service with their VPS like most all others do. Cloudflare is not always the best option.

    • Hi Mel, thank you for being our valued customer and for ordering multiple services with us! I am personally familiar with your account, and do appreciate the business you’ve trusted us with. We look forward to growing with you, as our relationship continues to build and unfold.

With regards to the previous comment you referred to above – I am not aware of any server failures lately that resulted in data loss. For example, we do take great measures to prevent that happening, i.e. running all of our production hypervisors on RAID-10 arrays. In either case, I’d be happy to work with the previous commenter above ( “lol” ) in order to identify and investigate what exactly happened (that is, if he was a direct customer of ours and didn’t purchase through a reseller or something of that nature). For example, if a customer purchases through a reseller, we’re not allowed to provide direct support to our reseller’s customers.

A good portion of our staff are based here in the US (we have actual/real office space in Rancho Cucamonga), although we realize and understand as a company that talent should not be restricted by physical location, so we do make exceptions in some cases and have some staff who work remotely. The term “offshore tech support” does tend have a bad stigma associated to it, in our case, I’d like to clarify that all of our support staff, whether remote or local within our headquarters, are direct and full-time hires by RackNerd. We operate with 8 hour shifts, and have multiple support staff assigned on every shift – so, it is true that sometimes another tech may answer your ticket, especially if you respond back after the original tech has already left his/her shift.

From time to time, communicating by text in this industry can be ambiguous, but I’d say overall, we do a fairly good job at deciphering requests (we have customers from all walks of life, for example – customers from international countries who are not foreign English speakers. As another example – the hosting industry is unique in that there are plenty of specialized terminology/terms, one customer could potentially refer to a terminology in a different/incorrect way a system administrator may refer to the actual feature/terminology as). In cases where communication is ambiguous, we interpret/decipher the request based on our experience and knowledge, and assist in the best way we possibly can. If anything was ever misunderstood, I do apologize and in those cases, we’re always happy to jump on a phone call with our customers to get to the bottom of it, or make suggestions based on what we interpret the request as. Customers are always welcome to update the ticket, with more additional details too, if they ever feel their original request may have been submitted in a manner that could be misunderstood and/or is missing details.

As you’ve pointed out – our KVM VPS services are by default unmanaged. Our customers appreciate this, as it allows us to keep our pricing low, while at the same time providing our customers with full root access and control over their environments. Since we provide SolusVM control panel, the beauty is – if you ever mess up or want to start over, you can always reinstall your server’s operating system from the panel. To help with this effort, we’re also continuing to build on our tutorials on both our YouTube channel and our blog. Linuxize is a good third party resource as well.

Most domain registrars include a DNS service if you do not wish to use Cloudflare, there’s other alternatives out there such as HE and Afraid as well.

      • Mel:

Thanks for the very informative reply. For the most part, your techs are top notch, and I have never been a customer of any business that has a response time like RackNerd. That alone is worth any slight error in ticket response being offbase.

You didn’t address why you don’t have a DNS service for your VPS?

One issue I was having, was according to your customer service manager, was because I was using Cloudflare, and he told me they block ports, which was not allowing my shared hosting email to go through, vis email clients. He gave me a workaround. I currently have one domain hosted at namecheap.

I would really like to get all my domains to racknerd. You also did’nt address why no discount for transfer lol. I’m not asking for handout, cause I think you do offer an additional free year. I’m planning to purchase additional services from you soon!!

        • Hi Mel — happy to hear that you’ve found our support response times to be quick, and overall support experience to be top notch. I believe I answered this down below, but we can offer DNS management for domains registered through us. You can also run a DNS server within your VPS if desired (many of our clients do this today, using software such as PowerDNS or bind). Many control panels also include DNS management features by default.

In short, there’s many ways of achieving this, whether that means utilizing your domain registrar’s DNS management portal, hosting your own DNS server within your VPS, or using a third party service such as Cloudflare, HE, or Afraid.

Thank You again for your continued business!

  4. Mel Parrish:

Why don’t you offer DNS service with your VPS like many other platforms? Alternative services such as Cloudflare don’t always work.
I would transfer my domains to you, but the price is too high. You should at least offer a discount for transfer, all your prices are the same. New,renewal, and transfer. I have 4 services with you, granted, they aren’t making you rich, but are very low resources.

Give a break on transfer and I’ll be a long time client.

    • Hi Mel, great catch! As you’ve probably noticed by now, our strong suit is more on the server/infrastructure side of things, rather than pure domains. In regards to domains specifically, we’re not a direct domain registrar ourselves (and not many are) – when it comes to domains, we’re a value added reseller. So this is based on our cost plus transaction fees (the pricing we charge for domains has proven to be a sweet spot for us). Today we target a lot of local businesses who are happy to pay our domain registration rates while benefitting from our service/support.

For those who are cost conscious for domain registration, most commonly we find that they go directly to a domain registrar for that, and possibly even seek limited time promotions from these domain registrars from time to time. You can still keep a domain registered elsewhere, while utilizing hosting services from us simply by updating DNS/nameservers. While on the other hand, some clients also find value in keeping everything under one roof/platform, and are happy to register the domain through us.

In addition, it should be said that domain registrars frequently raise their pricing (sometimes even annually). Therefore, barely making anything or trying to maintain pass-thru pricing would not look good for us, as we’d then have to extend those increases to our customers. As such, the domain pricing that we have is our sweet spot where our customers (especially local ones) want things up and running without having to be bothered with increases and things of that nature. Since the beginning of our business, we have yet to increase pricing on any existing customers/existing services. That’s our goal as we understand the burden price increases puts on customers, so we try our best to maintain pricing for existing services and absorb whatever we can.

Sorry, you were writing this before I had time to read it, that is why you will find another reply asking why you didn’t answer this question :) lol.

As a value added reseller, will you also have the same ability to set DNS for all aspects. email. etc?
I respect your reason for pricing, now that you have explained it.

I still want to transfer some of my domains to you, as soon as their waiting period(60) days have passed, because of having transfered them around.

I would like to keep many aspects of my VPS and hosting domain related “in house” with RackNerd.

You guys are awesome, and I like the fact that you come on here and respond to us.
Have a great weekend. Finally some sunshine here in Washington State. lol

  5. Thomas Bolton:

I have been using Racknerd for a tad shy over a year now (black friday 2020 is when I signed up with my first VPS here) I’ve since bought 3 more VPS with them each in a diff. location

No complaints tbh. For the price, you can’t beat it. The servers I have has never gone down.. only for a few minutes when I rebooted the server myself to apply a kernel change. My old host before Racknerd was using OpenVZ, which was missing a lot of newer OS templates, so when I moved here it was nice to see the selection of OS they support, because I think they use a better virtualization software.

About customer service, I’ve contacted Racknerd on a few occasions mainly with just generic questions and wanting to validate a few assumptions of mine I’ve always gotten a response back in minutes (literally open the ticket, make myself a coffee and come back to an answer to my question sort of thing..)

Happy customer, keep up the great work.

It’s great to hear that our services have been meeting your expectations, from both an uptime, service, and support perspective.

Hi, is the extra IP cost ($12 each) a one time cost or a yearly cost on top of the VPS cost? Thanks.

    • Hi Mrbb — Appreciate your interest in our services :)

Additional IPv4 addresses are available for $12/year each. This is on top of the VPS fee and can be added when needed, just open a sales ticket when ready.

      Thank You!

Signed up on the NY 1.5GB KVM. So far so good. Very very fast from the UK and the ticket I opened for rDNS got answered in just a few minutes.

For $15.88 a year I don’t have much cause for complaint. Using it amongst other things to move a couple of email accounts from the GApps rip off.
