I don’t want to rain on anybodies parade & I know that Salavatore has a good track record but I ask myself can you as VPS provider offer such a service and still pay your bills?
@prometeus: I know that for such a price you can’t expect the top performance but can I expect to use your service in 6 months? I suppose that this is a special offer and that you also earn money in the longterm.
I don’t want to troll but I’m just a little bit sceptical. There were many other provider which didn’t made it without solid financing…
@Phiber, I understand your doubt and I’ll try to give you as many informations I can.
we don’t depend on this business to survive, we have other solid source of income.
the general expences (included colocation and bandwidth) are paid from other services, we have a surplus of resources.
this business division was started with the idea to establish the company as a solid vps provider in 1-2 years, not to sell a bunch of nodes for a profit
the budget for this plan, even if not that big, was considered enough to sustain it for a full year in the worst case
we use these promotions to gain clients and visibility. We had a few google adword campaign running with a cap of €30/day (€900/month, more than €10K in a year). Every single click used to cost us €1 average. So I decided it was better to use that money to actually gain real users that can use our service and let other say about us.
So in the end maybe we don’t profit directly from the packages we sell with this promotion but it help grow our business and this is good :)

Prometeus is in the business of hosting since 1997. I think there are few providers here with such a record :) I did suspect they are doing it at a loss subsidizing the community here, but he convinced me it is not the case.
They are not exactly new in the LEB market either.
As he said: why pay advertising when you can do better by word of mouth AND offer something for those money, even considering you are doing at a loss, which probably it is not the case.
Compared with other providers, Prometeus has surplus resources, not overcomit and is simply monetizing that instead of leaving them rot in there.
Completely different from most others.

I am assuming that Prometeus is bad for hosting a VPN.

First of all I hope you agree with me that child pornography is a crime. There is a specialized police task force in italy that maintain a backlist of proven criminal content which is enforced with blackholing by ISP.
The gambling list is enforced on the ISP own dns (hint). Then there are from time to time a few IP addresses which are blackholed as per judges request.
I’m not happy with the last two things, but TBH I don’t think they are big freedom limitation.
However you’re right, some blocks are required by law and enforced by ISP on dns or ip blackholing.
I like this vps however it’s also not best choice for some “neigbour countries” VPN as well as all traffic goes through Level3 Frankfurt which means across half europe instead Italy directly. I tryed traceoute from few other eastern european locations and it goes always through Frankfurt1.Level3.net. It’s most likely great if you live in northern europe howerver if you happen to be in mediteranian area near Italy, routing will go first out of mediteranian area to reach mediteranian area again.
I can reach Italy in 20 minutes of driving however to reach VPS it’s 65 – 70 ms latency :)
(average for comparisation: Austria 18 ms, Germany 38 ms and Netherland, which is far away 45 ms). I am not blaming Prometeus for routes, just saying :)
This is the problem with tier 1, maybe in future our upstream will add some regional carrier… However seabone/telecom sparkle should have good EU routes, but it seems you go straight to level3. If you like, please PM some IP I can look at (with a trace in both direction from/to the vps with us).
I’m from Croatia and I was very nervous about this post, but after a little research I got the bargain VPS in this offer. The upstream provider for Prometeus is CDLAN (http://www.robtex.com/as/as20836.png) which has Tier-1 connectivity with Seabone, Level3 and Cogent – if your ISP has connectivity with any of these you’re on a roll – I get about 20-25ms depending on the service provider I use which is very much comparable to Germany and Netherlands where VPS prices are generally higher than this one.

It depends on the space available on the node, but on openvz it’s easy to buy more space, just open a sales ticket :)
I have the insane bargain 128MB KVM from the last offer. I haven’t been using it much but in my limited testing it’s worked great. I just logged into it and it has 40 days uptime, which I think means it has never been down. That KVM plan stayed in stock for quite a long time after that offer, making it one of the great secrets of LEB ;-).

multiple OpenVZ based solutions have issues with IPv6, due to a kernel problem:
* Simply not working
* Working, but firewalling not working decently, as in: connection tracking unavailable

It works as it should since beginning. Salvatore (prometeus) know what he’s doing (hint: http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/comment/53723#Comment_53723 ) and there’s no issue with his IPv6 setup.

I can use it for the AAAA for my website in one vps and also for Private IPv6 Squid proxy at another vps.
IPv6 connection tracking is not working on the kernel 2.6.18 which the old “burst RAM” OpenVZ uses, but as we see this offer is VSwap, so it’s on 2.6.32 and therefore shouldn’t have any problems with connection tracking.

Burst RAm is RAM which is alocated from a pool of unused RAM at that time.
vSwap is disk swapping. Till some time ago OpenVZ lacked this functionality and then the implementation was unstable, but now can be called mature.

Yes. However, using vSwap as permanent RAM will hammer the io on the node and this will probably make the host put the user in the abusers category.
Swap should only be used in times where you need a bit more ram for one thing or the other. Such as installation or upgrade of packages.

Afaik vSwap isn’t necessarily going into the actual disk swap, and if it’s not, OpenVZ just emulates that it’s slow(!).
Yes, as long as there is memory left, it wont go into swapping on the disk, but I know hosts that have no memory left and it does slow the io a lot, otherwise is hard to think 10 mb/s is the io speed of a decent array.
Sure, prometeus always has a lot of reserve and io is great, we were talking in general.

From the FAQ torrenting is allowed, with, or without capping, but dont hammer IO.

Bought that offer and using it with a small project for work. It goes faster that my Linode512@London, it’s amazing.
And today I found that the bandwidth with a Giga server that has a Gigabit port (49€/month option) is faster than light.
